0:00:02 > 0:00:04It's the time of year when it's hard to keep up with the weather,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06the ups and downs in temperature in particular -

0:00:06 > 0:00:08what to wear, how the weather feels.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10Remember, at the start of the week, it was frosty.

0:00:10 > 0:00:11Since then, it's turned milder.

0:00:11 > 0:00:1315 Celsius in the sunshine

0:00:13 > 0:00:14in southern England

0:00:14 > 0:00:15on Thursday afternoon,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17but by Thursday afternoon

0:00:17 > 0:00:18in Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:00:18 > 0:00:20single figure temperatures

0:00:20 > 0:00:21with sunshine and showers.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24The reason for the change, this cold front,

0:00:24 > 0:00:25the leading edge of colder air

0:00:25 > 0:00:27moving southwards across the UK

0:00:27 > 0:00:28with, on Thursday, a bit of cloud

0:00:28 > 0:00:30and patchy rain, then the sunshine

0:00:30 > 0:00:32and the showers following on behind

0:00:32 > 0:00:34and as that cold air completes its journey southwards

0:00:34 > 0:00:37for Friday morning, a widespread frost.

0:00:37 > 0:00:38So, the cold air's come back,

0:00:38 > 0:00:42but the milder air will mount a fightback next week,

0:00:42 > 0:00:43but how long that lasts

0:00:43 > 0:00:46is open to question, as we'll find out.

0:00:46 > 0:00:47This is the big picture for Friday.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50Behind that cold front, high pressure moving in

0:00:50 > 0:00:51so a cold, frosty start,

0:00:51 > 0:00:54but then to follow during Friday for most of us,

0:00:54 > 0:00:57glorious sunshine, light winds,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59with the exception of Scotland,

0:00:59 > 0:01:01especially northern Scotland where it stays windy,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03some gales into the Northern Isles

0:01:03 > 0:01:04and plenty of showers packing in here.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Wintry on the hills,

0:01:06 > 0:01:07maybe the odd one to Northern Ireland

0:01:07 > 0:01:08and north-west England,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11but many places will be dry with some sunshine,

0:01:11 > 0:01:12but now single figure temperatures.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14Anything near 15 is a thing of the past

0:01:14 > 0:01:16and temperatures will drop

0:01:16 > 0:01:17quickly after dark.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19Going into Friday, even if you are out and about

0:01:19 > 0:01:20for Children In Need activities,

0:01:20 > 0:01:21bear that in mind.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23Pudsey will be OK, got a bear thing going on.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25The rest of us should stay warm.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Now, going into Saturday, another chilly start.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29More cloud around for England and Wales.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31There'll be the odd splash of a shower,

0:01:31 > 0:01:32perhaps, for a time.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34The best of the sunshine will be in Scotland,

0:01:34 > 0:01:35though still windy in the north

0:01:35 > 0:01:37and still some of those wintry showers around

0:01:37 > 0:01:40with the lowest temperatures here 6 or 7 degrees,

0:01:40 > 0:01:41enhanced by the wind.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Elsewhere, still most of us single figures.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46And another frost Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Still quite windy towards the far north-east of the UK,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51but a frontal system coming into the west on Sunday

0:01:51 > 0:01:54looks to bring more cloud, a bit of patchy rain,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56eventually some less chilly air.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58A lot of uncertainty about the timing of movements

0:01:58 > 0:02:00of this north-eastwards.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01Maybe as it butts into that colder air

0:02:01 > 0:02:03in Scotland on Sunday night

0:02:03 > 0:02:04and into Monday morning,

0:02:04 > 0:02:06there could be a bit of snow out of it.

0:02:06 > 0:02:07We're left on Monday

0:02:07 > 0:02:09with a lot of cloud across the UK.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11A bit damp, a bit drizzly in places,

0:02:11 > 0:02:14maybe some sunny spells in northern Scotland here.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Still quite chilly, elsewhere turning milder.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19And it looks like as we go from Monday to Tuesday,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21there'll be another slow-moving weather front

0:02:21 > 0:02:23coming into the UK,

0:02:23 > 0:02:24producing cloud and some outbreaks of rain,

0:02:24 > 0:02:26spreading north-eastwards.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Along and to the north-east of this weather system,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31you'll hold on to some colder air behind it.

0:02:31 > 0:02:32Look how it's turned milder again

0:02:32 > 0:02:34with temperatures into double figures

0:02:34 > 0:02:35and it looks like,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37for much of next week,

0:02:37 > 0:02:38the likelihood is

0:02:38 > 0:02:39that they will be around.

0:02:39 > 0:02:40Low pressure to the north-west,

0:02:40 > 0:02:42high pressure to the south-east,

0:02:42 > 0:02:43this flow of fairly mild air

0:02:43 > 0:02:45with slow-moving weather systems coming in

0:02:45 > 0:02:47and always a chance that we'll hold on

0:02:47 > 0:02:48to some colder air in Scotland

0:02:48 > 0:02:51so the risk as the weather systems move north,

0:02:51 > 0:02:52there may be a bit of sleet and snow,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54especially into the hills in Scotland.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Less likely but still possible

0:02:56 > 0:02:58later in the week

0:02:58 > 0:03:00is that high pressure becomes established

0:03:00 > 0:03:01to the north-west of the UK and we start

0:03:01 > 0:03:03to draw that colder air in,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05never too far, of course, from the north-east,

0:03:05 > 0:03:08all the way back south across the UK

0:03:08 > 0:03:10with temperatures dipping once again.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13So, next week getting off to a mild start,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15cloudy with some rain at times.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17It is likely that it will stay that way

0:03:17 > 0:03:18throughout the week,

0:03:18 > 0:03:19but there is still a chance

0:03:19 > 0:03:22that colder air lurking in the north-east

0:03:22 > 0:03:23will come south again.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26So, temperatures are about to go up once more,

0:03:26 > 0:03:28but they may well be coming back down.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30When? Keep watching.
