0:00:00 > 0:00:03Hello. The emphasis for the next few days

0:00:03 > 0:00:08and further ahead is going to be less on rain and more on cold.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10Thankfully, on Thursday

0:00:10 > 0:00:12it was a much drier day for those areas

0:00:12 > 0:00:14badly affected by the recent heavy rain

0:00:14 > 0:00:15in Cumbria and Lancashire.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18Maybe one or two showers still around on Friday

0:00:18 > 0:00:19but nothing worse than that.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21We've got most of the showers, actually,

0:00:21 > 0:00:24again wintry across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27The odd shower possibly across southern England after some

0:00:27 > 0:00:29rain overnight. It could be a bit of a dull start

0:00:29 > 0:00:32but most places will see the sunshine coming through,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34a lot of dry weather around away from the north-west

0:00:34 > 0:00:36but temperatures will be lower.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Four degrees Glasgow and Belfast,

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Nine Celsius in London.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Temperatures are taking a downward trend.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44Not windy on Friday

0:00:44 > 0:00:47but the winds will start to pick up a little bit as we head overnight

0:00:47 > 0:00:48into Saturday morning

0:00:48 > 0:00:50driving those showers a bit further south.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Again, some sleet and snow in those, but it's colder air,

0:00:53 > 0:00:55so we're looking at a frost perhaps more widely.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58Almost anywhere, particularly in the countryside,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01could wake up to a frost early on Saturday morning.

0:01:01 > 0:01:02So a cold start,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04north-westerly winds driving in some wintry showers

0:01:04 > 0:01:08mainly across Scotland and Northern Ireland, across the north-west

0:01:08 > 0:01:10of England feeding into Wales, one or two in the south-west.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14But further east across the UK, it may well be a dry day,

0:01:14 > 0:01:17quite a lot of sunshine around too, so that will help the feel

0:01:17 > 0:01:21of the day but there's no disguising the fact that it will be cold.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23The winds, picking up over the weekend,

0:01:23 > 0:01:24will change direction a bit.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28We've got this ridge of high pressure coming in ahead of these

0:01:28 > 0:01:31weather systems off the Atlantic that will eventually bring a change.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35So still quite windy on Sunday but because we're getting this ridge

0:01:35 > 0:01:39coming in, we're losing a lot of the showers, so more places will be dry.

0:01:39 > 0:01:40The sunshine hangs on in the east,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42but in the west ahead of that rain

0:01:42 > 0:01:44and those weather systems,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46we'll get increasing cloud adding to the cold feel.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Nothing on that weather front there, the warm front.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51All the rain is on the secondary front,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53the cold front around that area of low pressure.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57We're going to find rain sweeping its way in overnight,

0:01:57 > 0:01:58continuing to drive its way into

0:01:58 > 0:02:01south-eastern areas on Monday then moving away.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04The wind direction changes back to north-westerly

0:02:04 > 0:02:06and we start to drag down some colder air.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10But Monday should be probably the mildest day of the next few.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Then as that area of low pressure moves away,

0:02:12 > 0:02:16so we start to push our air all the way from the north once again

0:02:16 > 0:02:19as this rather flat and long area of high pressure

0:02:19 > 0:02:22blocks everything off from the Atlantic.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26So we're drawing down colder air back across the UK

0:02:26 > 0:02:28with northerly winds set to return.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31So that means cold, it means sunshine, it means some showers.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33The wind direction will be crucial.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36More showers, wintry across northern Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38running across western parts of England and Wales

0:02:38 > 0:02:40not far away from the east coast

0:02:40 > 0:02:43but a change in the wind direction such as we may

0:02:43 > 0:02:47see on Wednesday may mean some more showers across the eastern

0:02:47 > 0:02:50side of the UK and fewer showers out towards the west.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53So subtle changes in the wind direction

0:02:53 > 0:02:55changing the distribution of the showers.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Looking further ahead,

0:02:57 > 0:02:59we need to look at the jet stream to explain what's going on.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02This is high up in the atmosphere, the upper level winds

0:03:02 > 0:03:03and with this configuration,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06this buckling of the jet stream, you get high pressure

0:03:06 > 0:03:07sitting to the west of the UK,

0:03:07 > 0:03:09low pressure driven into south-east Europe

0:03:09 > 0:03:12where it could be quite wet, not just rain but also some snow.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Now, we're going to see some snow over the outlook period

0:03:15 > 0:03:17because the winds are going to be northerly.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19So it is staying cold.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21As we were talking about this time yesterday,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24sunshine and wintry showers around and with some clear

0:03:24 > 0:03:27skies at night, we're going to find some more frosts as well.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28That's it, goodbye.
