0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello there. December is just around the corner

0:00:04 > 0:00:06and at the very start of the month we may see some milder air,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09but I think it's not going to last - generally

0:00:09 > 0:00:12a cold theme with some minor variations.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16High pressure to the west of us, lower pressure to the east,

0:00:16 > 0:00:18everything coming down from the north.

0:00:18 > 0:00:20The isobars, the winds, coming in from the north

0:00:20 > 0:00:21and that's dragging down colder air

0:00:21 > 0:00:22and it's getting colder

0:00:22 > 0:00:24over the next couple of days.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26The wind direction has changed slightly,

0:00:26 > 0:00:27so we're seeing more wintry showers

0:00:27 > 0:00:29down the eastern side of England,

0:00:29 > 0:00:30as well as a few wintry showers

0:00:30 > 0:00:31for northern Scotland.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33For many of these western areas

0:00:33 > 0:00:34where we had the showers on Tuesday,

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Wednesday should be drier

0:00:36 > 0:00:38and a lot of the UK will be dry

0:00:38 > 0:00:39and sunny, but cold again.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Temperatures three in the central belt,

0:00:41 > 0:00:42seven, if you're lucky,

0:00:42 > 0:00:44across southern parts of England and Wales.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Now, as we head into Thursday morning,

0:00:46 > 0:00:48as the air's getting colder,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51so the frost, I think, will be much more widespread, but again,

0:00:51 > 0:00:53many places will be dry and sunny

0:00:53 > 0:00:55after that frosty start.

0:00:55 > 0:00:56More showers coming back

0:00:56 > 0:00:58into Northern Ireland, to western Wales,

0:00:58 > 0:01:00to the far southwest of England,

0:01:00 > 0:01:01again some showers

0:01:01 > 0:01:03near coastal areas of eastern England

0:01:03 > 0:01:04and eastern Scotland.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Those showers could be wintry,

0:01:06 > 0:01:07particularly over the hills,

0:01:07 > 0:01:08but it will be cold

0:01:08 > 0:01:10and probably Thursday

0:01:10 > 0:01:12the coldest day of the next few,

0:01:12 > 0:01:13with temperatures typically

0:01:13 > 0:01:15three to five degrees maximum

0:01:15 > 0:01:17in the afternoon.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19As we head towards the end

0:01:19 > 0:01:22of the week and we move into December,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24this little high pressure here will tend

0:01:24 > 0:01:26to drift slowly and change its position,

0:01:26 > 0:01:27allowing these weather systems

0:01:27 > 0:01:29to come around the top of it and

0:01:29 > 0:01:31this is where we get the milder air,

0:01:31 > 0:01:34but it gets in very, very slowly.

0:01:34 > 0:01:35So a lot of cloud for Scotland

0:01:35 > 0:01:36and Northern Ireland,

0:01:36 > 0:01:37a little rain and drizzle,

0:01:37 > 0:01:38brighter for England and Wales,

0:01:38 > 0:01:39still a cold wind

0:01:39 > 0:01:42and some showers in that south-eastern corner

0:01:42 > 0:01:43where we're clinging on

0:01:43 > 0:01:45to this colder air for another day,

0:01:45 > 0:01:47but the milder air is coming in,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49because we'll lose the northerlies,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51get something more from the Atlantic,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53more of a westerly breeze.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55It does take a while, though,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58for the temperatures to recover, to lift,

0:01:58 > 0:01:59as that milder air comes in,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01but this is what we're looking at on Saturday.

0:02:01 > 0:02:02So seven, eight,

0:02:02 > 0:02:04and maybe even nine degrees there.

0:02:04 > 0:02:05A lot of cloud,

0:02:05 > 0:02:06going to lose the sunshine,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08but we'll lose those wintry showers.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Weak weather fronts rotating around the top

0:02:11 > 0:02:13of that area of high pressure

0:02:13 > 0:02:14and moving down across the UK.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Still behind that weather front there,

0:02:16 > 0:02:17there's a lot of cloud coming in

0:02:17 > 0:02:19across Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:02:19 > 0:02:20a bit of sunshine perhaps

0:02:20 > 0:02:22but more cloud coming down

0:02:22 > 0:02:23across England and Wales.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25On that cold front, that weak weather front,

0:02:25 > 0:02:26there'll be a little rain around,

0:02:26 > 0:02:27but temperatures back up

0:02:27 > 0:02:29to nine or ten degrees,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32so that's a bit milder than it would normally be

0:02:32 > 0:02:33at the time of year.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35But as we head into next week,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37the jet stream is going to change again,

0:02:37 > 0:02:39we get these major undulations

0:02:39 > 0:02:42in the jet stream, moving northwards,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44southwards and we get on the wrong side,

0:02:44 > 0:02:45if you like, of the jet stream,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47so we get back into the colder air.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49So that means as we move into next week,

0:02:49 > 0:02:51we return to those colder

0:02:51 > 0:02:54north and north-westerly winds bringing in some sunshine,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57those showers turning more wintry as the air gets colder

0:02:57 > 0:03:01and we get more frost around as well at night as skies tend to clear.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04So that's the general theme as we head into next week

0:03:04 > 0:03:08and that's because high pressure is out towards the west

0:03:08 > 0:03:11and we're drawing down these winds again from the north,

0:03:11 > 0:03:13colder winds back in across the UK.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15However, there is a small chance

0:03:15 > 0:03:18later next week that the position of

0:03:18 > 0:03:20the high could change and we may get

0:03:20 > 0:03:23some milder Atlantic air once again.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25It's less likely to happen, that is,

0:03:25 > 0:03:28and if it does, all too briefly, just like this weekend.
