0:00:02 > 0:00:03Hello. If you've been tempted to

0:00:03 > 0:00:06shed the thickest of your winter garments this weekend,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09with slightly higher temperatures, don't put them too far away.

0:00:09 > 0:00:13You'll need those extra layers again by the end of this forecast period.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16Cold air, you'll notice, not too far away,

0:00:16 > 0:00:20but at the moment we are bringing in this milder air from the Atlantic.

0:00:20 > 0:00:21It's certainly no heatwave,

0:00:21 > 0:00:24but it has brought some slightly higher temperatures already.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Little ridge of high pressure

0:00:26 > 0:00:28bringing in the westerly or north-westerly winds,

0:00:28 > 0:00:32and underneath this high, we do have one wriggling weather front

0:00:32 > 0:00:34making for a cloudy and a damp start to Sunday

0:00:34 > 0:00:37across southern parts of England and South Wales.

0:00:37 > 0:00:38Quite misty and murky as well.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41Things here will brighten up through the day.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Another finger of cloud across parts of Northern Ireland

0:00:43 > 0:00:45and south-west Scotland, into Wales and the south-west.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47A few spots of rain along this.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50Elsewhere, a fair amount of sunshine on Sunday.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Quite chilly up to the north-east, but not as cold as it has been,

0:00:53 > 0:00:54and down to the south-west

0:00:54 > 0:00:56we're looking at double-digit temperatures.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59And for many, it's been a while since we've seen that.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02During Sunday night, our area of high pressure still trying to

0:01:02 > 0:01:04build its way in from the west,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06it's going to push this frontal system though,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09so we start Monday morning on a largely dry note.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11There'll be some spells of sunshine through the day,

0:01:11 > 0:01:14generally large amounts of cloud, and in western areas

0:01:14 > 0:01:17that cloud will produce some outbreaks of patchy rain.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21Further east is where you have the best chance of seeing some sunshine,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23and those temperatures still not doing too badly,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25certainly relative to what we've had recently -

0:01:25 > 0:01:27eight, nine, ten degrees.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30So here's our little ridge of high pressure, then,

0:01:30 > 0:01:31as we move out of Monday into Tuesday.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33The high drifts eastwards.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36As these frontal systems start to squeeze in from the west,

0:01:36 > 0:01:38the isobars squeeze together,

0:01:38 > 0:01:40so the winds are going to start to pick up during Tuesday,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43particularly up towards the north-west.

0:01:43 > 0:01:44We'll see a lot of cloud,

0:01:44 > 0:01:47some outbreaks of patchy rain in northern and western areas.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Best chance of any brightness again towards the east

0:01:49 > 0:01:52and temperatures of seven to ten degrees.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54During Tuesday night into Wednesday,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57this weather front really gets stuck, we suspect,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59across Scotland, so we'll see rain

0:01:59 > 0:02:01continuing to feed into the north-west of Scotland

0:02:01 > 0:02:03on the increasingly strong wind,

0:02:03 > 0:02:05and then as we go on through the day on Wednesday

0:02:05 > 0:02:08rain will spread into other northern and western areas,

0:02:08 > 0:02:12and with the rain, strong winds - could see gales at times.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14But those winds coming from the south-west,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17so still pumping up some mild air for the time being.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21Now, that is the precursor to this pretty deep area of low pressure

0:02:21 > 0:02:24swinging its way through during Wednesday night into Thursday.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Strong winds, some heavy rain,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28and then on the back edge of that system,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31we start to get back into the cold air.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Could even be some snow on the back edge of that rain band

0:02:33 > 0:02:34over hills in the north.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38Certainly the showers in the north turning to snow, potentially even

0:02:38 > 0:02:41to fairly low levels as we get deeper into Thursday.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44And as we move through Friday into next weekend,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47this is the set-up. Low pressure to the east, high pressure to the west.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Follow the white lines, the isobars, all the way up to the north.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55We tap in, once again, to that cold Arctic air

0:02:55 > 0:02:58which is going to sweep its way southwards across the country.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01There'll be some showers, some of the showers will be wintry.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03Some spells of sunshine as well.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Through the latter part of the weekend and into the following week,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09there is just a chance we could bring frontal systems

0:03:09 > 0:03:11or areas of low pressure in from the north-west,

0:03:11 > 0:03:15and if that happens, yes, we'll see some rain and some strong winds,

0:03:15 > 0:03:18but with things generally cold as we head through the weekend

0:03:18 > 0:03:21and beyond, there's certainly the potential for some snow,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23particularly in the north.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25So keep those winter warmers close at hand -

0:03:25 > 0:03:27you may need them again

0:03:27 > 0:03:29as we head through the next ten days.
