0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello. The first chapter of our weather story this week is not

0:00:05 > 0:00:08a particularly thrilling one, just a continuation of the quiet

0:00:08 > 0:00:12and relatively mild weather that we've seen during Sunday.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14That's how it looked for one of our Weather Watchers in Cardiff

0:00:14 > 0:00:17on Sunday - large areas of cloud, some spells of sunshine -

0:00:17 > 0:00:20and that's what we take with us into the start of the new week.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23But after that quiet start to the story,

0:00:23 > 0:00:25things get a bit more exciting - wet

0:00:25 > 0:00:27and windy weather for the middle of the week, and then it will

0:00:27 > 0:00:31turn much colder and, yes, some of us will see some snow.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33But Monday is essentially plain sailing.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35Could be some fog patches in East Anglia

0:00:35 > 0:00:37and the south-east through the morning.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Then there'll be large areas of cloud

0:00:39 > 0:00:41which could produce the odd spot of rain,

0:00:41 > 0:00:44but on balance it's a mostly dry day with some spells of sunshine,

0:00:44 > 0:00:47temperatures not bad at all for the time of year, seven degrees

0:00:47 > 0:00:50in Newcastle, eleven for Plymouth and for the Channel Islands.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54Now, the quiet start to the week comes courtesy of this, an area

0:00:54 > 0:00:56of high pressure drifting slowly eastwards.

0:00:56 > 0:01:00But these frontal systems start to squash in from the west during

0:01:00 > 0:01:04Tuesday, and as those fronts squash in, it'll start to strengthen up the

0:01:04 > 0:01:08winds in northern and western areas. Some rain into the north-west, too.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12Dry down towards the south-east, and after any early fog has cleared,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14then we will see some spells of sunshine.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17But the main player in our weather story for the middle

0:01:17 > 0:01:21of the week is this, a deep Atlantic low-pressure system.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24The first effect will be to bring strong winds in western areas,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26increasingly strong through Wednesday.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28There'll be gales in places, heavy rain,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30too, into Northern Ireland, Western Scotland.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34Largely dry to the south-east, and with this south-westerly wind,

0:01:34 > 0:01:38very, very mild indeed, ten, eleven, twelve degrees,

0:01:38 > 0:01:41that mild air being drawn up ahead of our low-pressure system.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44Now, as the low moves through on Wednesday night,

0:01:44 > 0:01:47it's going to bring some very heavy rain, some very strong winds.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51That could cause some disruption, so stay tuned to the forecast.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54And then, as the low drifts away,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57we get plunged back into the deep freeze,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59these northerly winds coming all the way from the Arctic

0:01:59 > 0:02:02down across the British Isles.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04So on Thursday we have the rain to get rid of.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06In fact, it'll hang around for a good

0:02:06 > 0:02:07part of the day in the south-east.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Then it's a windy day, quite a bright day, with sunshine,

0:02:10 > 0:02:11but showers, too.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15Initially over hills in the north we'll see some snow, but that snow

0:02:15 > 0:02:20is likely to develop to lower levels as we head through Thursday night.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Now, this is a really wintry-looking weather chart, I have to say -

0:02:23 > 0:02:26low pressure to the east, high pressure to the west,

0:02:26 > 0:02:29these very strong northerly winds.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32In fact, we'll see gales across exposed spots in Scotland.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34And where those strong winds coincide with snow showers,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36it could be blizzard conditions.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Snow showers possible for the west coast and the east coast, many areas

0:02:39 > 0:02:42seeing sunshine, but a cold feel,

0:02:42 > 0:02:46which we take with us into the start of next weekend.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50These northerly winds still blowing down across the country.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53However, a subtle change looks likely to take

0:02:53 > 0:02:54place during the weekend.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57This area of high pressure looks like it's going to try

0:02:57 > 0:03:00and topple in from the west. It'll do a few things.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02It'll cut off that northerly wind,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05so it will be slightly - SLIGHTLY - less cold, we suspect,

0:03:05 > 0:03:09with fewer showers but more issues with frost and fog.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12There is, though, the continued risk of rain and snow,

0:03:12 > 0:03:14as through the latter part of the weekend

0:03:14 > 0:03:17and into the following week we could well see frontal systems or

0:03:17 > 0:03:20areas of low pressure diving in from the north-west, allowing us

0:03:20 > 0:03:24to tap into some milder air, yet with cold air not far away

0:03:24 > 0:03:26there is the continued chance of some snow.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29So a quiet start to the week, but then the story gets more exciting.
