0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. If you've written off this week's weather as grey and mild,
0:00:04 > 0:00:06not worth paying much attention to,
0:00:06 > 0:00:10then think again, because big changes are underway now.
0:00:10 > 0:00:12So far this week, a lot of this,
0:00:12 > 0:00:15and temperatures as high as this,
0:00:15 > 0:00:17but give it 24 hours or so and, by Friday morning,
0:00:17 > 0:00:20some of us will be waking up to scenes like this.
0:00:20 > 0:00:23It may be 4 degrees on Friday.
0:00:23 > 0:00:25It'll feel much colder in the Arctic air
0:00:25 > 0:00:28back across the UK, and that's the big change -
0:00:28 > 0:00:31turning much colder, and just about anywhere could see a snow shower
0:00:31 > 0:00:34Thursday night into Friday morning.
0:00:34 > 0:00:35Why? Storm Caroline,
0:00:35 > 0:00:37this deep area of low pressure,
0:00:37 > 0:00:39is the game-changer in this week's weather,
0:00:39 > 0:00:42passing to the north of Scotland during Thursday,
0:00:42 > 0:00:44closest to it stormy,
0:00:44 > 0:00:45windy across the UK,
0:00:45 > 0:00:47and as Caroline pulls away,
0:00:47 > 0:00:50then the Arctic air surges south across the UK.
0:00:50 > 0:00:52That process begins on Thursday,
0:00:52 > 0:00:55behind this band of wet weather clearing south-east England,
0:00:55 > 0:00:57and then sunnier skies,
0:00:57 > 0:01:01then the showers that follow in will turn increasingly wintry
0:01:01 > 0:01:04as the colder air moves in.
0:01:04 > 0:01:05We could see blizzards
0:01:05 > 0:01:07in Highland Scotland
0:01:07 > 0:01:08as temperatures drop away.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10So, by this stage of Thursday,
0:01:10 > 0:01:12attention turning to snow and ice,
0:01:12 > 0:01:14but until then it is very much wind.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17The closest to Storm Caroline, northern Scotland,
0:01:17 > 0:01:19with a Met Office amber "be prepared" warning,
0:01:19 > 0:01:21gusts possible in excess of 80mph,
0:01:21 > 0:01:2460 to 70 elsewhere in Scotland,
0:01:24 > 0:01:25parts of Northern Ireland,
0:01:25 > 0:01:27with a yellow "be aware" warning.
0:01:27 > 0:01:29There will be travel disruption,
0:01:29 > 0:01:32absolutely check before you head out.
0:01:32 > 0:01:34Thursday night, the winds aren't as strong,
0:01:34 > 0:01:36attention turning to snow and ice.
0:01:36 > 0:01:38Snow showers possible anywhere,
0:01:38 > 0:01:40particularly northern and western Scotland,
0:01:40 > 0:01:42Northern Ireland, Wales, the Midlands,
0:01:42 > 0:01:44even south-east England.
0:01:44 > 0:01:46Some of us will wake up to a covering of snow
0:01:46 > 0:01:49on Friday morning, icy in places too.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52A lot of sunshine across eastern parts on Friday,
0:01:52 > 0:01:53but sun or snow showers,
0:01:53 > 0:01:56in the wind, still strong on Friday,
0:01:56 > 0:01:59it'll feel like it's at or below freezing.
0:01:59 > 0:02:01Quite a bitter-feeling day.
0:02:01 > 0:02:02A quieter day on Saturday.
0:02:02 > 0:02:04Still cold, windy, some wintry showers,
0:02:04 > 0:02:07but then on Sunday, an Atlantic weather system,
0:02:07 > 0:02:09with its moisture, coming into the cold air,
0:02:09 > 0:02:12brings a risk of further snow in places.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16Saturday is the quieter day of the weekend.
0:02:16 > 0:02:18A few wintry showers in the west,
0:02:18 > 0:02:21near North Sea coasts, where the wind is strongest,
0:02:21 > 0:02:23so it'll feel coldest, but some sunshine too.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26But by Sunday, here comes that frontal system.
0:02:26 > 0:02:30Rain, sleet and snow, as it pulls into that colder air.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33A lot of uncertainty about who will see the snow.
0:02:33 > 0:02:36At the moment, it looks like North Wales, the Midlands,
0:02:36 > 0:02:38northern England, but that could change.
0:02:38 > 0:02:41There's certainly a risk of significant snow in places
0:02:41 > 0:02:44so keep an eye on Sunday's forecast
0:02:44 > 0:02:45for the updates.
0:02:45 > 0:02:46At the start of next week,
0:02:46 > 0:02:48that system is pulling away.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51We're back into a chilly northerly flow,
0:02:51 > 0:02:54but as the week goes on, there could be a repeat of Sunday's weather
0:02:54 > 0:02:57with this weather system in the Atlantic again bringing moisture
0:02:57 > 0:03:01into the cold air, which will be established across much of the UK,
0:03:01 > 0:03:05just occasionally milder towards the south and south-west.
0:03:05 > 0:03:06For next week's weather,
0:03:06 > 0:03:10it looks like it will stay cold for most of us for much of the week,
0:03:10 > 0:03:12often windy - winds from the north
0:03:12 > 0:03:13or north-west - and the risk
0:03:13 > 0:03:15of further snow, either in the form
0:03:15 > 0:03:16of wintry showers or from those
0:03:16 > 0:03:18Atlantic weather systems bringing in
0:03:18 > 0:03:21perhaps some rain, but also some sleet and snow.
0:03:21 > 0:03:23Don't be fooled by the quiet start
0:03:23 > 0:03:24to the weather this week.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26It is changing. Keep your eye on it
0:03:26 > 0:03:28and don't get caught out.
