0:00:02 > 0:00:05As forecast, it was a stormy day across northern Britain with

0:00:05 > 0:00:08gales in the far north of Scotland gusting

0:00:08 > 0:00:09in excess of 90mph.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12It wasn't like it everywhere, of course.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16In fact, in the Lowlands, it was closer to around 50 or 60, but

0:00:16 > 0:00:19we've had some pretty interesting pictures of strong gusts of wind.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22But the afternoon, in many parts of the country,

0:00:22 > 0:00:24was actually very beautiful as well.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26We had a weather front sweeping across the UK with

0:00:26 > 0:00:27rain in the morning

0:00:27 > 0:00:28and then the skies cleared,

0:00:28 > 0:00:31So there's been some fine weather around as well,

0:00:31 > 0:00:33it's not been all bad.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35This is Storm Caroline as we head into Friday,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37still making its presence felt

0:00:37 > 0:00:39in the far north of Scotland there,

0:00:39 > 0:00:40impacting parts of Scandinavia as well.

0:00:40 > 0:00:41A lot of isobars there,

0:00:41 > 0:00:43so still some very strong winds there

0:00:43 > 0:00:44for Orkney, Shetland

0:00:44 > 0:00:45and the north of Scotland,

0:00:45 > 0:00:47but we're going to be focusing

0:00:47 > 0:00:49on the snow showers through

0:00:49 > 0:00:50the course of Friday.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Northern Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:00:52 > 0:00:53the north-west of England and Wales,

0:00:53 > 0:00:55possibly into the Midlands as well,

0:00:55 > 0:00:57maybe into the south-west of England too.

0:00:57 > 0:00:58And in some areas we could see

0:00:58 > 0:01:00five or ten centimetres here,

0:01:00 > 0:01:01but just hit and miss,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03not every town and city, maybe up

0:01:03 > 0:01:05to 20 centimetres of fresh snow there

0:01:05 > 0:01:06across the Scottish hills.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09And then through the course of Friday night,

0:01:09 > 0:01:10you can see quite a few

0:01:10 > 0:01:11of those snow showers

0:01:11 > 0:01:12falling in the same place here,

0:01:12 > 0:01:15maybe some of them even reaching London,

0:01:15 > 0:01:17but in London we're just talking about a few flakes.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19Notice how many other parts of the country,

0:01:19 > 0:01:20here's the clock,

0:01:20 > 0:01:21early on Saturday morning,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23not getting much snow at all.

0:01:23 > 0:01:24So this period that we're

0:01:24 > 0:01:26going through right now

0:01:26 > 0:01:27will be very hit and miss

0:01:27 > 0:01:30as far as the snow showers are concerned,

0:01:30 > 0:01:31but it is going to be cold everywhere.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33On Saturday, 2 or 3 degrees on the thermometer,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35it's still going to be quite windy,

0:01:35 > 0:01:36particularly in the north,

0:01:36 > 0:01:38so it'll feel more like

0:01:38 > 0:01:39-5 degrees there in Aberdeen.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41So here's a look at Saturday night

0:01:41 > 0:01:43and then into Sunday,

0:01:43 > 0:01:44still a lot of cold air,

0:01:44 > 0:01:45a cold night, Sunday morning,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48and a weather front moves into that colder air.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50What does that mean? That means that there's

0:01:50 > 0:01:52a potential for some snow. Look how the snow forms.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54The blue's obviously the rain, snow across Wales,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57into Northern Ireland, two areas here and then

0:01:57 > 0:01:58the snow falls across the Midlands

0:01:58 > 0:02:00and parts of northern England.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01A lot of uncertainty with this,

0:02:01 > 0:02:02it could be further north,

0:02:02 > 0:02:03it could be further south,

0:02:03 > 0:02:05so where that snow falls,

0:02:05 > 0:02:06we're still not entirely sure,

0:02:06 > 0:02:07but there is a risk that

0:02:07 > 0:02:08there will be some as we go

0:02:08 > 0:02:10through the course of Sunday.

0:02:10 > 0:02:11Here's the start of the week,

0:02:11 > 0:02:12low pressure systems

0:02:12 > 0:02:14did in to the south of us.

0:02:14 > 0:02:15When we get this pattern

0:02:15 > 0:02:16with low pressures moving

0:02:16 > 0:02:17to the south of us,

0:02:17 > 0:02:18we get streams of colder air

0:02:18 > 0:02:20coming in from the north.

0:02:20 > 0:02:21So here's a look at Monday.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23You can see where the winds are coming from,

0:02:23 > 0:02:24all the way from the north,

0:02:24 > 0:02:25a northerly from the Arctic,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27so still pretty chilly.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28Temperatures only around about

0:02:28 > 0:02:302 or 3 degrees in the north.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32A little bit milder maybe in the south,

0:02:32 > 0:02:337 degrees Celsius,

0:02:33 > 0:02:34but most of the rain

0:02:34 > 0:02:36actually passes towards the south of us.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Here's a look at Tuesday,

0:02:38 > 0:02:39a bit of a gap in the weather.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Looks like Tuesday might be a brighter day,

0:02:42 > 0:02:43with some sunshine.

0:02:43 > 0:02:44We're in between weather systems

0:02:44 > 0:02:46and maybe very briefly things are

0:02:46 > 0:02:48going to warm up just a little bit

0:02:48 > 0:02:50with temperatures approaching

0:02:50 > 0:02:519 degrees there in Plymouth.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53But the idea is that overall

0:02:53 > 0:02:55for most of next week

0:02:55 > 0:02:58and into the latter part of next week,

0:02:58 > 0:03:00the jet stream is going to be around about here.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02We're on the cold side of the jet stream.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05You can clearly see where the cold air is here,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07so that means that it's not going to be warming up.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10The mild air with the low pressure and the rain is going to stay

0:03:10 > 0:03:11to the south of us, moving into France.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13We're going to stay in the cold air,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15still at risk of some snow showers,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17particularly across northern areas of the UK,

0:03:17 > 0:03:21so overall, yes, the temperatures might go up a little bit early

0:03:21 > 0:03:26in the week, but on balance we're going to stay in the colder air.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28That's it for me. Thanks for watching.
