0:00:02 > 0:00:03Hello there. I think it's fair to say
0:00:03 > 0:00:05it's been quite a wintry week of weather,
0:00:05 > 0:00:07but it looks as though Mother Nature releases her grip
0:00:07 > 0:00:10a little on winter as we move towards the weekend.
0:00:10 > 0:00:12For today, it will be a quieter story
0:00:12 > 0:00:14in terms of weather -
0:00:14 > 0:00:16a northerly wind driving in some showers
0:00:16 > 0:00:17off the North Sea coast
0:00:17 > 0:00:18and one or two down into the south-west,
0:00:18 > 0:00:20but sandwiched in between the two,
0:00:20 > 0:00:22it'll be drier with some sunshine coming through.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24A few wintry showers into the far north of Scotland
0:00:24 > 0:00:26and as we go through the night,
0:00:26 > 0:00:28clear skies will allow a frost to form.
0:00:28 > 0:00:30But it looks as though Saturday
0:00:30 > 0:00:32will be the last of the cold days,
0:00:32 > 0:00:34still under the influence of that cold air,
0:00:34 > 0:00:35but as we move through
0:00:35 > 0:00:36the second half of the weekend,
0:00:36 > 0:00:39a south-westerly wind will drive in milder,
0:00:39 > 0:00:41but slightly wetter conditions from the west.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43But we will start off on Saturday
0:00:43 > 0:00:45on a frosty note for many of us.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47The exception, really,
0:00:47 > 0:00:49Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England.
0:00:49 > 0:00:50A little more cloud
0:00:50 > 0:00:51and a few scattered showers here,
0:00:51 > 0:00:53but where we've got the clear skies
0:00:53 > 0:00:55and the sunshine after that frost,
0:00:55 > 0:00:57temperatures are not going to recover very quickly.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59In fact, we'll only see afternoon highs
0:00:59 > 0:01:00of around 3 degrees
0:01:00 > 0:01:01so it's going to be cold,
0:01:01 > 0:01:03milder to the south-west.
0:01:03 > 0:01:04But the mild air's on its way
0:01:04 > 0:01:06as we've already told you,
0:01:06 > 0:01:08and this little nose of high pressure
0:01:08 > 0:01:10quietens things down through the night,
0:01:10 > 0:01:12but it won't be long before this weather front
0:01:12 > 0:01:14starts to influence the story
0:01:14 > 0:01:15by the end of the weekend.
0:01:15 > 0:01:17That's going to bring some rain,
0:01:17 > 0:01:18some of it heavy for a time,
0:01:18 > 0:01:20into Northern Ireland, Scotland,
0:01:20 > 0:01:22eventually into western fringes of Wales
0:01:22 > 0:01:23and south-west England.
0:01:23 > 0:01:24A south-westerly wind,
0:01:24 > 0:01:26milder air starts to push in -
0:01:26 > 0:01:29double digits where we've got the cloud and the rain.
0:01:29 > 0:01:31Now, that front will sweep through
0:01:31 > 0:01:33overnight Sunday into Monday
0:01:33 > 0:01:35and then this high pressure will build.
0:01:35 > 0:01:36Now, this is quite important
0:01:36 > 0:01:38because this looks likely
0:01:38 > 0:01:40to set the trend up for next week
0:01:40 > 0:01:41and, in fact, the high pressure stays
0:01:41 > 0:01:43under the influence to the south here.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45This south-westerly wind will continue to drive in
0:01:45 > 0:01:48a few more showers, but, as you can see,
0:01:48 > 0:01:508 to 12 degrees, a milder sort.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53Eventually, we'll start to see a weather front
0:01:53 > 0:01:55starting to squeeze in from the north-west -
0:01:55 > 0:01:57the isobars squeezing together,
0:01:57 > 0:01:58the winds strengthening,
0:01:58 > 0:02:00but all the time, central and southern areas
0:02:00 > 0:02:03will be under the influence of this high pressure.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05So, that could lead to some frost
0:02:05 > 0:02:07and potential for some fog,
0:02:07 > 0:02:09which will be slow to lift,
0:02:09 > 0:02:10but it's going to be mild for all,
0:02:10 > 0:02:12double digits quite widely on Tuesday,
0:02:12 > 0:02:14still the potential for some showers
0:02:14 > 0:02:16which will eventually turn into rain
0:02:16 > 0:02:19as that frontal system pushes in during Wednesday.
0:02:19 > 0:02:21As you can see, highs of 9 to 12 degrees
0:02:21 > 0:02:23so let's just recap.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26So far this week, this has been the story.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28The jet stream has been to the southern half,
0:02:28 > 0:02:30the southern flank of the UK,
0:02:30 > 0:02:32and once we're to the north of the jet stream,
0:02:32 > 0:02:34that allows this north-westerly flow.
0:02:34 > 0:02:35We're on the colder side of the jet.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38But as we move into next week,
0:02:38 > 0:02:40the jet stream is going to move
0:02:40 > 0:02:41and in actual fact, it will push
0:02:41 > 0:02:43to the north and west of us.
0:02:43 > 0:02:44Now, what that's going to do,
0:02:44 > 0:02:46it's going to allow this south-westerly flow
0:02:46 > 0:02:48to kick in and so milder for all,
0:02:48 > 0:02:51but also it's going to deflect low pressures
0:02:51 > 0:02:52up into the north-west
0:02:52 > 0:02:54so it looks likely into next week
0:02:54 > 0:02:56that we could see areas of high pressure
0:02:56 > 0:02:59clinging on into the south-east corner,
0:02:59 > 0:03:00early morning frost
0:03:00 > 0:03:01and fog could be an issue,
0:03:01 > 0:03:02but at the same time,
0:03:02 > 0:03:04that south-westerly flow
0:03:04 > 0:03:05will continue to drive in
0:03:05 > 0:03:07areas of low pressure into the north and west.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09That's where we're likely to see
0:03:09 > 0:03:11the most unsettled weather into next week.
0:03:11 > 0:03:13So, just to recap,
0:03:13 > 0:03:15it looks as though it's going to stay mild
0:03:15 > 0:03:17for most of next week with spells of rain
0:03:17 > 0:03:18chiefly to the north and west,
0:03:18 > 0:03:20most of the drier weather into the south.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22So, that's how it's looking.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24I haven't alluded to Christmas weekend.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26I will do that same time tomorrow.
0:03:26 > 0:03:27Take care.
