0:00:02 > 0:00:04Welcome to Weather for the Week Ahead where we look further

0:00:04 > 0:00:08afield and I can give you an early insight into what may well

0:00:08 > 0:00:11happen towards Christmas.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14Before that we closed out our wintry week on a cold

0:00:14 > 0:00:16note but with some sunshine.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18Most of the showers were across the far north-east

0:00:18 > 0:00:22and that made it feel bitter if you were caught in the showers.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24Here's a beautiful picture, pretty dramatic

0:00:24 > 0:00:28but I'm sure it didn't feel very pleasant if you were out and about.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30The cold air stays with us

0:00:30 > 0:00:33for one more day before we start to see a change.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36A milder south-westerly flow driving in across the country.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39That is going to bring milder weather but unfortunately it

0:00:39 > 0:00:42will bring wetter weather for the second half of the weekend.

0:00:42 > 0:00:47Before that it's a cold and frosty start for most of us on Saturday.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49The exception Northern Ireland north-west England, Wales

0:00:49 > 0:00:51and eventually into the south-west.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55A rah of showers making it feel a little disappointing here.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58Despite that frost temperatures will struggle with some decent

0:00:58 > 0:00:59spells of sunshine.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Two or three degrees across central and eastern areas,

0:01:02 > 0:01:05with the cloud and the showers, six to eight.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08The change arrives through Saturday night into Sunday morning.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11This front will push in from the west.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14The wind direction changes, a west or a south-westerly.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17A milder and wetter source. It's bringing in some rain,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20some of it heavy for a time through Northern Ireland, Scotland,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23north-west England and Wales and gradually that will move to

0:01:23 > 0:01:26all parts through parts of Sunday but milder with it.

0:01:26 > 0:01:287-11.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33That marks the change as we go into the early half of next week.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36It will be predominantly dry, mild for most of us

0:01:36 > 0:01:38but there's going to be a lot of cloud around.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Don't expect too much in the way of sunshine.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44On Monday perhaps the best of the sunshine will be across central

0:01:44 > 0:01:47and eastern areas and with clearer skies through the night

0:01:47 > 0:01:50it will be a chillier day. Six degrees here.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52We'll see more cloud out to the west.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55The winds increasing, a bit more breeze through the north-west

0:01:55 > 0:01:58and the arrival of another weather front trying to

0:01:58 > 0:02:01push in from the north-west all the time.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03That will introduce a few scattered showers across Scotland

0:02:03 > 0:02:05and Northern Ireland.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Elsewhere it's a cloudy but dry story,

0:02:07 > 0:02:109-12 the high on Tuesday afternoon.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14Into Wednesday our weather front, a very weak affair,

0:02:14 > 0:02:16slicing its way down through the country.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Behind it bright and breezy, 10-11.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22Down to the south, cloudy with highs of 12.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25To the early half of this week this is the weather story.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27We have this area of high pressure to the south.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30The jet stream at the moment really to the north of the UK.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33That's allowing this mild south-westerly flow to develop.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37Deflecting the lows into the north-west, the extreme north-west

0:02:37 > 0:02:42so quite a quiet story but a cloudy story with this moist cloudy flow.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46As we go into the end of the week one computer model

0:02:46 > 0:02:50suggests that the jet stream dips down to the south again

0:02:50 > 0:02:53and when we're to the north of the jet stream that allows

0:02:53 > 0:02:56the north-westerly flow which means as we head to the Christmas

0:02:56 > 0:02:59period it could turn pretty cold.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02However that is only one model.

0:03:02 > 0:03:08The favoured suggestion is for this north south divide to stay

0:03:08 > 0:03:11with us with high pressure down towards the south

0:03:11 > 0:03:14and the jet stream deflecting these lows across to the north.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18Still a lot to play for. Still a lot of uncertainty.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21At the moment it does look as though we start the week ahead mainly mild.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24There will possibly be a brief cold spell

0:03:24 > 0:03:27and then likely to revert back to a north south split.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29We'll firm up on that over the weekend.
