0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello there. Our weather looks pretty quiet for the next few days,

0:00:04 > 0:00:07by this time next week, it will be much more disturbed,

0:00:07 > 0:00:11much more unsettled, and between now and then, of course,

0:00:11 > 0:00:13we have Christmas.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16Now, the jet stream, the winds high up in the atmosphere,

0:00:16 > 0:00:20is currently sitting well to the north of the British Isles.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22And that's driving all the weather systems, all the areas

0:00:22 > 0:00:25of low pressure, well away to the north.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Now, by Christmas Day, you'll notice the position of the jet stream

0:00:28 > 0:00:31is much further south. It will also be much stronger,

0:00:31 > 0:00:35so not only will it develop areas of low pressure and move them across

0:00:35 > 0:00:38the British Isles, those areas of low pressure

0:00:38 > 0:00:41will potentially turn pretty intense,

0:00:41 > 0:00:43with some heavy rain and some strong winds.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45More on that, to come, for the time being,

0:00:45 > 0:00:47we're sticking with this fairly quiet theme.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50Wednesday - quite a cloudy day, particularly in the south.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Some outbreaks of rain along this weak weather front

0:00:52 > 0:00:55in northern England, North Wales. Best chance of brightness

0:00:55 > 0:00:58for Northern Ireland and Scotland. Quite breezy in the north,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01with a few showers, and for most it will be mild -

0:01:01 > 0:01:03double-digit temperatures for the most part.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06And as we head through Wednesday night, we'll see this weak

0:01:06 > 0:01:09weather front slipping its way just that little bit further south.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13Some very misty, murky conditions for hills in the west,

0:01:13 > 0:01:16quite drizzly as well. Some clear spells further north,

0:01:16 > 0:01:19where it will be, I suppose, on the chilly side but generally

0:01:19 > 0:01:23a mild start to Thursday morning. So this weather front

0:01:23 > 0:01:25will just continue to wriggle and writhe around

0:01:25 > 0:01:28as we go through Thursday but as this area of high pressure

0:01:28 > 0:01:31builds its way in, it will tend to squeeze much of the life

0:01:31 > 0:01:35out of the weather front, so it will mostly be light and patchy rain,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38which at this stage looks likely to be moving northwards

0:01:38 > 0:01:40and eastwards again on Thursday.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43With that, a lot of cloud, some misty, murky, drizzly conditions

0:01:43 > 0:01:46for some of the hills. Brightest of the weather up towards

0:01:46 > 0:01:49the north-east, where it will also be on the cool side. For many,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51again though, it will be mild.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53Now, on Friday, remember that area of high pressure

0:01:53 > 0:01:56is squeezing the life out of that weather front,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59so actually although there will be large amounts of cloud,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01there will be a lot of dry weather too, best of the brightness

0:02:01 > 0:02:05up towards the north-east, and this area of high pressure

0:02:05 > 0:02:08is still with us as we head into the start of the weekend.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12But...this frontal system pushing in from the north-west is just the

0:02:12 > 0:02:15first sign of that more active weather that

0:02:15 > 0:02:18we'll be starting to feel the effects of as we get into

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Christmas and beyond. It will bring some rain into northern areas

0:02:21 > 0:02:25during Saturday, increasingly brisk winds as well.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Still mild at this stage, you'll notice.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Those winds picking up even further as we go into Christmas Eve.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33This weather front only making slow progress southwards

0:02:33 > 0:02:36and eastwards, the further south you are it should be largely dry.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40Still pretty cloudy, could be some mist and fog patches around as well.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Now, as we move out of Christmas Eve towards Christmas Day,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46here comes that more active weather. The jet stream by this stage

0:02:46 > 0:02:50will be pushing that bit further south.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53What that's going to do is spin up an area of low pressure.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55As that drifts its way eastwards, for a time

0:02:55 > 0:02:57we'll draw mild air in from the south,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00but on the back edge of that low we'll start to get into

0:03:00 > 0:03:03something colder for a time. Now, this transition is likely to

0:03:03 > 0:03:06happen around Christmas Day. There is a bit of uncertainty

0:03:06 > 0:03:10about the timing, and even once that has happened, notice further

0:03:10 > 0:03:12areas of low pressure developing in the Atlantic,

0:03:12 > 0:03:16so more unsettled weather to come. So, for Christmas week

0:03:16 > 0:03:19there will be some colder spells, it certainly won't be cold

0:03:19 > 0:03:21all the time, but there will be some heavy rain at times,

0:03:21 > 0:03:25some gales as well. So, quiet for the time being,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27then we have Christmas, and then things look much,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29much more unsettled.
