0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. After Christmas Day, it looks like the weather pattern is going

0:00:04 > 0:00:08to be much more changeable, very unsettled conditions to come.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11In the run-up to Christmas Day, things are very quiet.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13We are keeping the cold air at bay for the time being.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15Mild conditions across the UK

0:00:15 > 0:00:17because the jet stream is in this position,

0:00:17 > 0:00:19so it is to the north of us,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22so we are on the warmer, milder side of that.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25But that mild air comes with a lot of cloud.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Essentially, we've got this flow of westerly winds with

0:00:28 > 0:00:31high pressure to the south, low pressure to the north of us

0:00:31 > 0:00:34and on those weather fronts, as they get closer to the UK,

0:00:34 > 0:00:36we'll see some spells of rain.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38After a dull and damp start on Friday,

0:00:38 > 0:00:40many areas will become drier.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43We may get some drizzle across the Highlands of Scotland

0:00:43 > 0:00:44as cloud comes in here.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Best chance of seeing some sunshine

0:00:46 > 0:00:48probably in the north-east of Scotland.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50But under the cloud, and there will be a lot of it

0:00:50 > 0:00:52and there may be some hill fog too,

0:00:52 > 0:00:54the temperatures could be 10 to 12 degrees.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57And not really falling very much overnight.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59We've got the strong winds coming in across the more northern

0:00:59 > 0:01:00parts of the UK.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03That rain beginning to develop a little more widely

0:01:03 > 0:01:05across the Highlands and up towards the Northern Isles too.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07A lot more cloud across eastern areas of Scotland,

0:01:07 > 0:01:10so temperatures here won't be quite as low.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Elsewhere with cloudy skies,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14a mild night - 8 or 9 degrees.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16We still have this same weather pattern then,

0:01:16 > 0:01:18high pressure to the south of us dominating.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19Lower pressure to the north.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Run of Atlantic winds

0:01:21 > 0:01:24and on that weather system we are going to find some more rain.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26So this is Saturday, the start of the weekend.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28We've got those winds continuing to

0:01:28 > 0:01:30strengthen across the northern half of the UK.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32More rain coming into the north-west of Scotland,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34maybe where we've got some shelter from the hills,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36we may see a little sunshine coming through.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40But on the whole, it remains cloudy, it remains dry, quite misty

0:01:40 > 0:01:42and murky over some of the western hills.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Very mild. Temperatures again 10 to 12 degrees.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Christmas Eve now, and things starting to turn

0:01:47 > 0:01:50wetter across Scotland, particularly Western Scotland.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52The rain adding up more and more

0:01:52 > 0:01:54and some rain coming into Northern Ireland.

0:01:54 > 0:01:59Some drizzle over some western hills but otherwise a mild and cloudy day.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02We've got low-pressure developing along that weather front

0:02:02 > 0:02:04which is going to start to change things

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Christmas Day and beyond.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08So it is buckling our band of wet weather,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10pushing it back northwards again across Scotland

0:02:10 > 0:02:13where there's still some colder air over the Highlands

0:02:13 > 0:02:15and Grampians where there could be some snow.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Otherwise, heavy rain in Scotland coming into Northern Ireland.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21England and Wales, windy but very mild and cloudy.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Temperatures 10 or 11 degrees.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25That's the last of the really mild air, though.

0:02:25 > 0:02:26I think as we head into Boxing Day,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28temperatures will drop a little bit,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31particularly across Scotland and Northern Ireland as we get

0:02:31 > 0:02:35some colder but drier air moving down into England and Wales.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37But the really cold air is across the other

0:02:37 > 0:02:40side of the Atlantic into North America.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43This colder air is going to drive its way across the Atlantic

0:02:43 > 0:02:47towards the UK from time to time beyond Christmas.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50So this is after Christmas Day and we're getting a strengthening

0:02:50 > 0:02:53jet propagating right the way across the Atlantic.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57It squishes away the high pressure and instead of high pressure,

0:02:57 > 0:03:01we're probably going to pick up areas of low pressure and drive them

0:03:01 > 0:03:02towards the UK just like this.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Lots of isobars on the chart. It will be wet, it will be windy.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Still this colder air tucking in across northern areas

0:03:08 > 0:03:10of the UK from time to time,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13so there is the threat of some snow

0:03:13 > 0:03:16across the North where we get these colder spells.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19But on the whole, very unsettled weather, rain could be quite heavy

0:03:19 > 0:03:23at times and it will be accompanied by some strong to gale-force winds.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26So very different weather from what we're seeing at the moment.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28That's it, goodbye.
