0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. After Christmas, it looks like our weather pattern

0:00:04 > 0:00:06will change, and the change comes about

0:00:06 > 0:00:09because of a change in the position of the jet stream.

0:00:09 > 0:00:13Now, right now, and over the next few days, the jet stream is going to

0:00:13 > 0:00:17be in this sort of position, so it's steering to the north of the UK.

0:00:17 > 0:00:21It keeps the colder air at bay and it keeps us in this mild air.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24Atlantic winds heading our way, bringing a lot of cloud,

0:00:24 > 0:00:27as we have seen over the past few days around the top of that

0:00:27 > 0:00:28area of high pressure.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31We probably will see more rain arriving from northern areas in

0:00:31 > 0:00:35the next few days, as that weather front begins to get a bit closer.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37And that probably starts really on Saturday with rain

0:00:37 > 0:00:39arriving across the north and west of Scotland.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Ahead of it, though, with some stronger winds,

0:00:41 > 0:00:44we may see a bit more sunshine in Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46perhaps into the north-east of England.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48Some glimpses of sunshine further south

0:00:48 > 0:00:51where the winds are lighter but on the whole, it will be a cloudy day.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53It will be a mild day, there'll be a stronger breeze,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56temperatures 10 to 12 degrees.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59As we head overnight, we've still got those west to south-westerly

0:00:59 > 0:01:01winds, we've still got a lot of cloud, not as much mist

0:01:01 > 0:01:04and fog over the hills because the wind is a bit stronger.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07That rain having moved southwards starts to move northwards again,

0:01:07 > 0:01:10really, it's all because there's a bit of a wave on the weather

0:01:10 > 0:01:13front which will alter the position, north and south.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16There, you can see that wave on that front there.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20As that wave tip moves away, so the cold front, the rain-bearing

0:01:20 > 0:01:24cold front starts to move south again, this time for Christmas Eve.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27So, we'll see it turning wetter in Scotland, some heavy rain in

0:01:27 > 0:01:30western Scotland, and we'll see more rain arriving in Northern Ireland.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32For England and Wales, a bit of drizzle here and there,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34quite cloudy again, as you can see.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37But we could see some sunshine for eastern areas of England.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40It will be stronger winds for England and Wales than Scotland

0:01:40 > 0:01:41and Northern Ireland,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45the temperatures pretty much across the board 10 or 11 degrees.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Now, for the big day itself, Christmas Day.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50We've got some windy weather for England and Wales,

0:01:50 > 0:01:51ahead of some rain,

0:01:51 > 0:01:54this band of rain that's moving across Northern Ireland over

0:01:54 > 0:01:57the Irish Sea into England and Wales and still affecting Scotland.

0:01:57 > 0:01:58The air gets a bit colder here,

0:01:58 > 0:02:02so there may be some snow over the Scottish mountains.

0:02:02 > 0:02:03But it's not really cold air

0:02:03 > 0:02:06that comes in behind this weather front that sweeps rain overnight,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09we've got more rain coming in on the next one.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12But what we are seeing is the start of the change to something

0:02:12 > 0:02:13much more unsettled.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15So, one area of rain moves through,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17we get some sunshine for a while on Boxing Day.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Later in the day, we get rain coming into Northern Ireland

0:02:19 > 0:02:21and Wales and the south west.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Temperatures will be a bit lower on Boxing Day but nothing

0:02:23 > 0:02:24particularly cold.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Everything moving on fairly quickly.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29So, that first area of low pressure moves through,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31things become drier and brighter on Wednesday,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34a tuck of something a little bit colder so temperatures will be

0:02:34 > 0:02:37low at three to five across the northern half of the UK.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39So, as we head towards New Year,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42we're seeing this change in the weather pattern.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44We can relate it to the jet stream.

0:02:44 > 0:02:49You can see this surge of stronger winds running through that jet,

0:02:49 > 0:02:51which is further south.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Now, the jet stream picks up areas of low pressure,

0:02:54 > 0:02:56drives them towards the UK, one after another,

0:02:56 > 0:03:00and those areas of low pressure are further south, not moving to the

0:03:00 > 0:03:04north of the UK as we are seeing now but moving right over the UK.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06So every now and again,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09you tuck in some colder air on the northern edge,

0:03:09 > 0:03:11and that means the chance perhaps of some snow.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15But the pattern is much more unsettled, much more changeable.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18We'll have some stronger winds, perhaps gales at times.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20For the most part, it will be rain from time to time

0:03:20 > 0:03:24but where we see these tucks of colder air, colder spells, there is

0:03:24 > 0:03:27the chance of some snow perhaps across the north.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28That's it, goodbye.
