0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. Say what you like about dreaming of a white Christmas
0:00:04 > 0:00:06but at least this mild and quiet weather is kind to anyone
0:00:06 > 0:00:08making pre-Christmas travel.
0:00:08 > 0:00:12But things could change right after Christmas Day
0:00:12 > 0:00:15as it turns colder and there is a risk of some snow.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17This is the mild air we have now through Christmas Eve
0:00:17 > 0:00:20into Christmas Day, but late on on Christmas Day,
0:00:20 > 0:00:23but more especially going into Boxing Day,
0:00:23 > 0:00:26notice the colder air starting to move south across the UK again,
0:00:26 > 0:00:29and it's Boxing Day and a few days beyond in that colder air,
0:00:29 > 0:00:32there is a risk of some snow, as I'll show you in a moment.
0:00:32 > 0:00:35Now, this for Christmas Eve is the mild weather.
0:00:35 > 0:00:36Around this area, high pressure,
0:00:36 > 0:00:40the flow of air coming in from the Atlantic, still a moist flow,
0:00:40 > 0:00:42still plenty of cloud and still this weather front, which even
0:00:42 > 0:00:46into Christmas Day, will be hanging around the same part of the UK.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48So, here is the rain from it on Christmas Eve.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51Several hours of quite heavy rain in western Scotland.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53In the hills, we could see up to 100 millimetres.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55Turning wetter across more of Northern Ireland,
0:00:55 > 0:00:59that rain pushing into Cumbria, where it will be quite heavy.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01To the south of that, mainly dry, often cloudy.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04North of it, a few brighter breaks into northern Scotland.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07And on through Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day,
0:01:07 > 0:01:10overnight, notice still some outbreaks of rain then across
0:01:10 > 0:01:13Northern Ireland into Scotland and the far north of England.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15South of that, a bit of patchy light rain and drizzle,
0:01:15 > 0:01:18and nearly for all of us, as Christmas Day begins, it will be
0:01:18 > 0:01:21frost free, it will be mild, it will be a green Christmas Day.
0:01:21 > 0:01:23And still that weather front
0:01:23 > 0:01:26is close to Scotland and Northern Ireland
0:01:26 > 0:01:29but it is only gradually later on Christmas Day into Boxing Day
0:01:29 > 0:01:31finally starts to move further east.
0:01:31 > 0:01:34But notice, as we go on through Christmas Day
0:01:34 > 0:01:36still some uncertainty about the detail and position,
0:01:36 > 0:01:38but it's going to hang around for quite some time.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41Central belt, southern Scotland, the east of Northern Ireland,
0:01:41 > 0:01:45gradually pushing into Wales and western England later in the day.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48And it is the boundary between the very mild Christmas Day that
0:01:48 > 0:01:50a large part of England and Wales will have
0:01:50 > 0:01:52and a colder one for those parts of Scotland
0:01:52 > 0:01:54and Northern Ireland turning drier.
0:01:54 > 0:01:56And as we look at things through Christmas Day night
0:01:56 > 0:01:59and into Boxing Day, as this system clears away
0:01:59 > 0:02:01and the colder air just tucks in behind,
0:02:01 > 0:02:04we could see some late snow on Christmas Day
0:02:04 > 0:02:06into Boxing Day morning
0:02:06 > 0:02:08on some of the hills as it pulls away eastwards.
0:02:08 > 0:02:10And then on Boxing Day, once that has gone,
0:02:10 > 0:02:12we have this colder flow of air.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15Remember that cold air moving south across us,
0:02:15 > 0:02:16single figure temperatures.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19And then, this weather system coming into the south west, here
0:02:19 > 0:02:23is this area of low pressure going from Boxing Day and into Wednesday.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26And it's from this area of low pressure, pushing that moisture
0:02:26 > 0:02:30into the cold air, we could see some snow across some
0:02:30 > 0:02:33southern parts, maybe not just on hills, that is one to watch.
0:02:33 > 0:02:36During Wednesday, that clears away eastwards, wintry showers,
0:02:36 > 0:02:39particularly to coastal areas on Wednesday, and for some of us,
0:02:39 > 0:02:41low single figures for the top temperature.
0:02:41 > 0:02:43And then on Thursday, that cold air, frosty start,
0:02:43 > 0:02:47another weather system targeting southern parts of the UK
0:02:47 > 0:02:50and again we could see some snowfall out of this, initially
0:02:50 > 0:02:52and particularly to hills as it moves in.
0:02:52 > 0:02:56So, just bear in mind for a time right after Christmas,
0:02:56 > 0:02:58there could be some travel impacts from wintry weather.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00But as we go into the following weekend,
0:03:00 > 0:03:05the last weekend of 2017, it is low pressure dominating things,
0:03:05 > 0:03:08though things turn a little bit milder once again.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10It will be unsettled the last few days of the year
0:03:10 > 0:03:12into the start of 2018,
0:03:12 > 0:03:14we're more looking at rain rather than anything else,
0:03:14 > 0:03:16and some northern hills could see a bit of snow out
0:03:16 > 0:03:18as the weather system is moving through.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21But we are concerned then about the strength of wind which could be
0:03:21 > 0:03:24disruptive from the weather systems moving through
0:03:24 > 0:03:26right at the end of the year into the start of 2018.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29And that is your latest Weather For The Week Ahead.
