0:00:02 > 0:00:03Hello. Well, very mild out there.

0:00:03 > 0:00:05For the last couple of weeks or so,

0:00:05 > 0:00:08we have been forecasting a very mild Christmas.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10Indeed, the temperatures are well above the average

0:00:10 > 0:00:12for the time of the year

0:00:12 > 0:00:13right across the country right now.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16It'll remain like it throughout the big day itself.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18So staying very mild across the UK.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21The winds are streaming in from the southwest,

0:00:21 > 0:00:23carrying rain-bearing clouds as well.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25For some of us, additionally, it's very soggy.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28But out towards the northwest of the Atlantic here,

0:00:28 > 0:00:29the winds are changing direction.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31The air coming in from the Arctic,

0:00:31 > 0:00:33so there is that little bit of cold air

0:00:33 > 0:00:35tucking in behind this mild plume of air.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37That is a sign that, as we head

0:00:37 > 0:00:39towards Boxing Day and the days after,

0:00:39 > 0:00:41things are going to turn just that little bit colder.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43But for Christmas Day itself,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45it's very mild across England and Wales.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47There's some rain on the way too.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49Those temperatures will be double figures

0:00:49 > 0:00:51right across England and Wales.

0:00:51 > 0:00:52In the Lowlands of Scotland,

0:00:52 > 0:00:54dipping down to 7 later in the day.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56You can see in the far north of Scotland there,

0:00:56 > 0:00:574 or 5 degrees.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59But a wet end to Christmas Day

0:00:59 > 0:01:02for many of us across the UK.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03It does look as though the rain

0:01:03 > 0:01:05could even turn to snow,

0:01:05 > 0:01:06at least for a time there across

0:01:06 > 0:01:08the southern Uplands of Scotland,

0:01:08 > 0:01:10perhaps the Highlands as well.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12As we see slightly cold air

0:01:12 > 0:01:14from the north tucking into this weather system,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16so it could just about be the case

0:01:16 > 0:01:18that on Christmas Day in the evening,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20we will get a little bit of snow,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22but mostly across the hills.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Boxing Day itself, still mild air across the UK,

0:01:24 > 0:01:28but that colder air starting to push in into the UK.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31We'll also see one weather front moving away,

0:01:31 > 0:01:32another one coming in.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35We're in between weather systems on Boxing Day itself.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Let's see what it looks like, then, in the morning.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39There could be a little bit

0:01:39 > 0:01:41of sleetiness around some of the northern areas,

0:01:41 > 0:01:42but then a lot of sunshine around.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Could be quite frosty first thing in the morning.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46You can see the temperatures are into single figures.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48But very quickly, later on Boxing day,

0:01:48 > 0:01:50we'll see another little area of low pressure

0:01:50 > 0:01:52that's going to tuck in into the south here,

0:01:52 > 0:01:55also mix in with the cold air.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57On the northern edge of this area of rain,

0:01:57 > 0:01:58across the hills of Wales,

0:01:58 > 0:02:00maybe the Chilterns, the Cotswolds,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02we could see a little bit of sleet or snow,

0:02:02 > 0:02:04falling mostly, as I say, across the hills.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06So a very damp if not wet start

0:02:06 > 0:02:08also on Wednesday morning

0:02:08 > 0:02:10across the southeast of the country.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Again, there could be a little bit

0:02:12 > 0:02:13of sleetiness around,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16as we see the cold air coming in from the north.

0:02:16 > 0:02:17So Christmas itself is mild,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19but then Boxing Day and Wednesday,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21we start to see the colder air,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23at least temporarily, coming in.

0:02:23 > 0:02:24You can just about see a little bit of snow

0:02:24 > 0:02:26there mixing in. At this stage,

0:02:26 > 0:02:27we don't think it's a big deal.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29For most of us, Wednesday afternoon

0:02:29 > 0:02:31is going to be bright and pretty cold,

0:02:31 > 0:02:35with temperatures of around 3 to say 6 or 7 degrees.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37On Thursday, another weather front

0:02:37 > 0:02:39perhaps affecting south-western areas,

0:02:39 > 0:02:40but you can see then on Thursday

0:02:40 > 0:02:43it's largely a dry day across the UK,

0:02:43 > 0:02:44with a few showers in the north,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47temperatures of around 3-5 degrees.

0:02:47 > 0:02:48Then, come Friday,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51those winds start to change direction again

0:02:51 > 0:02:53and they come in from a south-westerly direction.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55That means that, once more,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57those temperatures will start to rise.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Next weekend, we're back into that mild air mass,

0:03:00 > 0:03:03so back the wind comes from the far southwest.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06But, again, a little bit of cold air tucking in behind.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09The thinking is that New Year's Eve will see a low pressure approaching,

0:03:09 > 0:03:12and into New Year's Day - this spells very wet,

0:03:12 > 0:03:14very windy weather across the country.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18So quite a stormy, potentially, period into 2018.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20At the very least, it'll be unsettled

0:03:20 > 0:03:24with certainly some wind on the way, gales possibly as well,

0:03:24 > 0:03:25and perhaps a bit of snow

0:03:25 > 0:03:27across northern hills as well.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28That's it from me. Bye-bye.
