0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. Well, after a very mild Christmas,

0:00:04 > 0:00:07things are set to turn a little bit colder from Boxing Day,

0:00:07 > 0:00:11in fact, and there's also a chance of waking up to some snow

0:00:11 > 0:00:14across the southern uplands of Scotland and the Highlands,

0:00:14 > 0:00:18and I think for all of us, it is going to turn colder on Boxing Day.

0:00:18 > 0:00:19Now, at the moment,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22we still have south-westerly winds affecting southern parts of the UK,

0:00:22 > 0:00:24a weather front approaching, bringing some rain,

0:00:24 > 0:00:28in fact Boxing Day will be very rainy, very windy in the south.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32But the colder air is starting to tuck back in again,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35and the mild air that we've had during Christmas Day itself

0:00:35 > 0:00:37is being pushed away towards the east,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39so Boxing Day starts off cold, icy in places,

0:00:39 > 0:00:42some wintry weather there across the Pennines, maybe.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44The southern uplands of Scotland

0:00:44 > 0:00:47possibly waking up to 2-5 centimetres of snow,

0:00:47 > 0:00:49and some snow further north in the Highlands, as well.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52But you can't miss this here out south-west.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54This is a weather front which is also swinging in off the Atlantic.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57A wet day for Plymouth, for Cardiff as well.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00And I want to point out what happens with this weather front

0:01:00 > 0:01:02as it slides across the UK

0:01:02 > 0:01:04during the course of the evening of Boxing Day.

0:01:04 > 0:01:05Look at that.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08Some snow develops across the hills of Wales,

0:01:08 > 0:01:09maybe the Peak District,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11possibly the bottom end of the Pennines, as well.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15I don't think there's going to be any snow in Birmingham necessarily,

0:01:15 > 0:01:19but we are going to see at least some sleet in some towns and cities,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21and most of the snow will be falling across the hills.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24And then as we head into Wednesday, the mild air is pushed away,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27and we are well and truly in that colder air mass

0:01:27 > 0:01:28coming in from the north.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31And when I say colder, it is colder compared to what we've had.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36This is not necessarily desperately cold, arctic air.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39So, first thing in the morning, a little bit of wintriness around,

0:01:39 > 0:01:40maybe across parts of the east Midlands,

0:01:40 > 0:01:43maybe even the south-east as well, but that low pressure,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45and the weather front pulls away,

0:01:45 > 0:01:48and overall, Wednesday is looking bright and cold

0:01:48 > 0:01:52after a frosty start in many northern and western areas.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Then on Thursday, we are actually in between weather systems,

0:01:55 > 0:01:59so the low pressure there pulls away out into Scandinavia.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Another one is knocking on our doorstep,

0:02:01 > 0:02:03but we're in between the weather systems here,

0:02:03 > 0:02:05in that colder air stream, so once again, on Thursday,

0:02:05 > 0:02:09we're waking up to chilly weather, frosty start for some of us,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12but there will be a lot of crisp sunshine around, as well.

0:02:12 > 0:02:13And this is what it looks like.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Six degrees maybe in London, briefly touching six.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20More like three degrees across many northern cities,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22and maybe a little bit of rain later on in the day

0:02:22 > 0:02:24into the tip of Cornwall there.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Beyond that, into Friday, as we approach the weekend,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28a very different story.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Low pressure starts to line up out there in the Atlantic,

0:02:30 > 0:02:34being pushed by an increasingly strong jet stream.

0:02:34 > 0:02:35That means that the weather

0:02:35 > 0:02:37is starting to turn more and more turbulent.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39With that, milder air returns,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42temperatures back into double figures with rain sweeping through.

0:02:42 > 0:02:43Looks like Saturday,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46there might be brief windows of brighter weather,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50but look at those values, 13 degrees, strong winds as well,

0:02:50 > 0:02:54very gusty around the Pennines, too, and then as we head into Sunday,

0:02:54 > 0:02:58New Year's Eve, we're still in that mild Atlantic air,

0:02:58 > 0:03:00but with that, a strong rush of wind, as well,

0:03:00 > 0:03:04so a risk of gale force winds for some of us, as well.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06And the schematic really depicts

0:03:06 > 0:03:08what the start of 2018 is going to look like.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11We'll see low pressure very close to the UK

0:03:11 > 0:03:15with a powerful jet stream, and that can only mean one or two things.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19It certainly means very unsettled weather, windy weather,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22and at times, there will be spells of rain.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26So, very mild at the moment, briefly colder Boxing Day,

0:03:26 > 0:03:29and then towards 2018, milder again.
