0:00:03 > 0:00:06Well, some parts of northern Britain managed to get a white Christmas.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09We had a little bit of snow in southern and south-eastern Scotland,

0:00:09 > 0:00:13also the far north-east of England, and for the next 48 hours

0:00:13 > 0:00:16it is going to stay quite cold across most of the UK.

0:00:16 > 0:00:20And in fact, during the early hours of the morning we'll

0:00:20 > 0:00:25start to see some snow, potentially, falling across parts of Wales

0:00:25 > 0:00:28and other areas of southern England as cold air from the north

0:00:28 > 0:00:32tucks in, mixes in with this milder air that's been sitting just

0:00:32 > 0:00:35about across the far south of the country.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37So, through the early hours, anywhere from the Welsh hills,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40around the Cotswolds, possibly the Peak District

0:00:40 > 0:00:42and some of the towns and cities across the Midlands

0:00:42 > 0:00:45could get a little bit of rain mixing in with snow

0:00:45 > 0:00:47and then by the morning quite possibly around the

0:00:47 > 0:00:49hills of south-eastern England,

0:00:49 > 0:00:52and it looks like East Anglia will hang on to the cloud

0:00:52 > 0:00:56and some of that sleetiness and rain through much of Wednesday.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58So a cold picture for Norwich, but for most of us

0:00:58 > 0:01:02it looks like Wednesday is going to be cold and sunny,

0:01:02 > 0:01:05so a very chilly but pleasant day on the way.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Now, this is the following night,

0:01:07 > 0:01:10so Wednesday night into Thursday it's going to be a cold night

0:01:10 > 0:01:14with some wintry showers there in Scotland and iciness developing,

0:01:14 > 0:01:17as well, so take it steady first thing in the morning on Thursday.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21And you can see the cold air has dug right down into parts of France,

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Benelux and Germany, as well, so we're in this colder air stream.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27During the course of Thursday, in-between weather systems,

0:01:27 > 0:01:30one out there blowing itself out across Scandinavia,

0:01:30 > 0:01:33another one moving just about into south-western areas,

0:01:33 > 0:01:37but for most of us on Thursday it's a sunny and another cold day.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39Now, things change from Thursday.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43Weather systems start to rapidly sweep in off the Atlantic.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46The winds will start freshening, as well.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49With that comes another spell of milder air. So, you can see

0:01:49 > 0:01:51that cold air that's been sitting over us during the week.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53That pushes away towards the east,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56and then we're back into this mild south-westerly air stream.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59There could be a bit of snow across the hills there, the Pennines,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01southern Scotland, but temperatures are creeping

0:02:01 > 0:02:05back up to double figures there as those weather fronts sweep in.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Then on Saturday, the New Year weekend,

0:02:07 > 0:02:11one low pressure moves out into the Continent.

0:02:11 > 0:02:12We're in-between low pressures.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15There's another one here. They're never too far away.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17But it looks as though we're just about going to

0:02:17 > 0:02:20be in the middle of these two weather systems,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23so that means some sunshine but not for very long.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Mild - look at that, 13 degrees.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28And then, New Year's Eve, so this is Sunday we're talking about,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31a fairly deep low, centred somewhere across northern

0:02:31 > 0:02:34parts of the country. Could be a little bit further east,

0:02:34 > 0:02:35a little bit further west,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38difficult to say exactly when it'll sweep through,

0:02:38 > 0:02:42but the indication is we're in for quite a blowy end to 2017.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45Mild, as well. Sunshine around, too.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48And the best approximation I can give you for midnight is that

0:02:48 > 0:02:51we'll probably be somewhere in-between two areas of low

0:02:51 > 0:02:55pressure with weather fronts very close by.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59That means that there is a risk that at midnight into 2018

0:02:59 > 0:03:02it could be raining in some parts of the country.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05But there could be some clear skies, as well, so sitting on the fence

0:03:05 > 0:03:08here a little bit, but that's the best I can give you at this stage.

0:03:08 > 0:03:13Into 2018, low pressure very close by, driven by a powerful jet

0:03:13 > 0:03:17stream, and that's going to continue for the first few days of 2018.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21It's likely to be very windy, blustery throughout the country,

0:03:21 > 0:03:25with spells of rain, even a potential for gale-force winds.

0:03:25 > 0:03:29So we'll be roaring in, potentially at least, into 2018.
