0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. Thanks for joining me. The weather is going to be warming up

0:00:04 > 0:00:07over the coming days as we head towards the New Year,

0:00:07 > 0:00:11but in the short term, Thursday is still looking pretty cold.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14And after the recent rain, sleet and snow that we've had

0:00:14 > 0:00:16across some parts of the country, it is going to be

0:00:16 > 0:00:19very icy first thing on Thursday morning,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22and we still have cold air coming in from the north right now.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25But there's mild air out there in the Atlantic,

0:00:25 > 0:00:28ready to come our way in the next couple of days.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30So Thursday morning starts off icy

0:00:30 > 0:00:32across central and southern areas of the UK,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35but a largely clear and sunny start to the day.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38Might be some freezing fog across parts of Northern Ireland.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41And then, really, it's just a cold and crisp Thursday afternoon,

0:00:41 > 0:00:44with just the odd wintry shower there

0:00:44 > 0:00:46across northern parts of Scotland.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48Chilly, five degrees at best in London, and for most of us,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51it'll be around two, three, four degrees,

0:00:51 > 0:00:52those sorts of values.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Now, there is another spell of snow at least potentially on the way,

0:00:55 > 0:00:58and it's going to happen Thursday night into Friday.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Now, watch what happens.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03It turns very cold and frosty Thursday night,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05another weather front moves off the Atlantic,

0:01:05 > 0:01:08brings a spell of transient snow, so only lasting a certain time,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11in Northern Ireland, Wales and Northern England.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Difficult to say whether it will settle in the towns and cities,

0:01:14 > 0:01:18for example Leeds, Sheffield, Yorkshire,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20possibly into southern Scotland, but across the hills,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22almost certainly a covering on the way.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25And then, eventually, the wind off the Atlantic

0:01:25 > 0:01:27will tend to make things a little bit too warm

0:01:27 > 0:01:29for the snow to last for any longer,

0:01:29 > 0:01:31and it is going to turn to rain.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33So mild air eventually starting to reach us

0:01:33 > 0:01:35as we head into Friday

0:01:35 > 0:01:37and certainly for the weekend.

0:01:37 > 0:01:38The New Year weekend,

0:01:38 > 0:01:40we've got this plume of very mild air heading our way.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42So let's see what happens, then,

0:01:42 > 0:01:43during the course of Saturday.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Weather fronts moving across the UK,

0:01:45 > 0:01:47a daisy chain of weather fronts

0:01:47 > 0:01:49waiting out there for us in the Atlantic.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51It should be a blustery day, as well,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53with low pressure moving through, so windy conditions,

0:01:53 > 0:01:55at least for a time, but look at this.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58That rush of Atlantic air sends those temperatures

0:01:58 > 0:02:00possibly even into the low teens

0:02:00 > 0:02:02across southern parts of the UK.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05Still remaining cold for a time there across Scotland.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09And broadly speaking, Sunday, so into New Year's Eve,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12low pressure in charge of the weather across the whole

0:02:12 > 0:02:15of the North Atlantic, sending a rush of winds in our direction.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19So blustery in places, and those temperatures still around 12,

0:02:19 > 0:02:20maybe 13 in the south,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22a little colder in Scotland

0:02:22 > 0:02:25at around about five to seven degrees there in Glasgow.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27And then, New Year's Eve itself,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29as we head towards midnight,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31it looks like we're in between two areas of low pressure,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33so it just might be the case

0:02:33 > 0:02:36that we'll have a window of opportunity,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39a window of clearer weather just in time for the fireworks,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41but showers never too far away.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43So the best guess at the moment,

0:02:43 > 0:02:44lots of clear spells around,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46with a chilly wind,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48but be prepared for passing showers

0:02:48 > 0:02:51at the stroke of midnight or leading up to it.

0:02:51 > 0:02:52And then, New Year's Day itself,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54one low pressure crossing the country,

0:02:54 > 0:02:56more weather fronts heading in our direction,

0:02:56 > 0:02:58more low pressures way out there,

0:02:58 > 0:03:01so we're starting to enter a very turbulent period

0:03:01 > 0:03:03as we head into early 2018.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07New Year's Day itself, some sunshine, showers,

0:03:07 > 0:03:08brisk winds as well.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10And then the jet stream,

0:03:10 > 0:03:11a powerful one in early January.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13You can see a low pressure here.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16That indicates unsettled weather, and basically,

0:03:16 > 0:03:19that translates to spells of wind and rain,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21the possibility of gales, as well.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24And we could get shots of colder air from the north,

0:03:24 > 0:03:26which would bring a bit of snow to northern hills.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28So a real mixed bag on the way.
