0:00:02 > 0:00:05Progressively through the last few days of 2017,

0:00:05 > 0:00:09the weather will be turning less wintry, but there are now signs

0:00:09 > 0:00:11that something colder could return

0:00:11 > 0:00:14through the first part of 2018.

0:00:14 > 0:00:15Friday certainly brought some of us

0:00:15 > 0:00:18some wintry scenes, but more of us will be

0:00:18 > 0:00:20getting into mild air as we head through this weekend,

0:00:20 > 0:00:23particularly in the south, something that bit colder

0:00:23 > 0:00:25holding on towards the north.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Now, the mild air has been ushered in

0:00:28 > 0:00:30by a band of rain. As that slides northwards

0:00:30 > 0:00:32across Scotland during Saturday,

0:00:32 > 0:00:33it could still be cold enough here

0:00:33 > 0:00:35for some snow over the hills.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Then we see bright skies and sunshine

0:00:37 > 0:00:38and then down to the south,

0:00:38 > 0:00:39an area of cloud and rain

0:00:39 > 0:00:41just flirting with southern England

0:00:41 > 0:00:42and the Channel Islands.

0:00:42 > 0:00:43Mild here, though -

0:00:43 > 0:00:4513 in Plymouth, just 3 in Aberdeen.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Now, Saturday night brings the potential

0:00:47 > 0:00:49for some stormy weather.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51It doesn't look like much on our chart,

0:00:51 > 0:00:52but the Irish weather service

0:00:52 > 0:00:53have named this developing area

0:00:53 > 0:00:55of low pressure Storm Dylan.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57It could bring gales

0:00:57 > 0:00:58for Northern Ireland and Scotland.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01It could also bring this band of heavy rain

0:01:01 > 0:01:02with squally winds southwards

0:01:02 > 0:01:04and eastwards across England

0:01:04 > 0:01:05and Wales through the first part

0:01:05 > 0:01:06of New Year's Eve.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08Then we're expecting things to brighten up

0:01:08 > 0:01:09with some sunshine,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11a scattering of hefty showers

0:01:11 > 0:01:14and all of us just about into that milder air -

0:01:14 > 0:01:166 to 12 degrees.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18If you're planning to celebrate at midnight,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20there's a good chance of having clear skies overhead.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23One or two showers blowing through on the breeze,

0:01:23 > 0:01:24particularly in western areas,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26and that breeze will be quite strong

0:01:26 > 0:01:28so it may feel a little bit chillier

0:01:28 > 0:01:31than temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees suggest.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32New Year's Day,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34the weather chart looks like this.

0:01:34 > 0:01:35Quite complex, actually -

0:01:35 > 0:01:36low pressure to the north,

0:01:36 > 0:01:38another low trying to run its way in

0:01:38 > 0:01:40towards the south and in between,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42a zone of breezy, yes,

0:01:42 > 0:01:43but fairly bright weather,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45some spells of sunshine.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Windy with rain into northern Scotland,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49still cold enough for snow over the high ground here

0:01:49 > 0:01:51and also cloud and rain for the Channel Islands

0:01:51 > 0:01:53and the south of England

0:01:53 > 0:01:55and temperatures perhaps at this stage

0:01:55 > 0:01:56just a couple of degrees down

0:01:56 > 0:01:58at 4 to 10 degrees.

0:01:58 > 0:01:59Now, into Tuesday,

0:01:59 > 0:02:02things are likely to start off fine and dry,

0:02:02 > 0:02:04but our next Atlantic frontal system pushes in.

0:02:04 > 0:02:05Outbreaks of rain,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07increasingly strong winds

0:02:07 > 0:02:09and that is the theme for the start of the week -

0:02:09 > 0:02:11things chopping and changing,

0:02:11 > 0:02:13quiet spells and then wet and windy spells

0:02:13 > 0:02:15following in quick succession,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17all being pushed along very quickly

0:02:17 > 0:02:19by areas of low pressure.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Quite a deep low likely to be moving its way

0:02:21 > 0:02:23across the north of the British Isles on Wednesday.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25That could bring gales, bands of rain,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27followed on by showers.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29Still cold enough for those showers to be wintry

0:02:29 > 0:02:31over high ground in the north

0:02:31 > 0:02:34with some spells of sunshine in between.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36So, the theme during next week

0:02:36 > 0:02:38is a strong jet stream,

0:02:38 > 0:02:39the winds high up in the atmosphere

0:02:39 > 0:02:41really energising the weather systems

0:02:41 > 0:02:43and pushing them through quickly,

0:02:43 > 0:02:47but there are signs of a change later next week.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49We're expecting some cold air

0:02:49 > 0:02:52to dive its way out of Canada across the Atlantic

0:02:52 > 0:02:54and that will have the effect

0:02:54 > 0:02:56of turning the jet stream a little bit bendier,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59more kinks in the jet stream.

0:02:59 > 0:03:00Now, what that means

0:03:00 > 0:03:02is that our weather pattern

0:03:02 > 0:03:03may slow down a little bit

0:03:03 > 0:03:06so while there will still be areas of low pressure

0:03:06 > 0:03:08close to the scene, there's a bit more chance

0:03:08 > 0:03:10that high pressure will have an influence

0:03:10 > 0:03:12as we go into next weekend.

0:03:12 > 0:03:13Low pressure still close by

0:03:13 > 0:03:15and that's likely to bring us

0:03:15 > 0:03:17a generally north or north-westerly wind.

0:03:17 > 0:03:18What does all that mean?

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Well, longer dry spells are likely into next weekend,

0:03:22 > 0:03:24albeit with some further rain and perhaps some snow

0:03:24 > 0:03:27with things expected to turn colder.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29That's all from me. Bye for now.
