0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello there. I'm going to end this forecast

0:00:04 > 0:00:05by talking about cold weather returning.

0:00:05 > 0:00:08But I'll start by talking about the fourth named storm

0:00:08 > 0:00:10of the season that's going to arrive

0:00:10 > 0:00:13on the final day of this year.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15Coming from this area of cloud,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17it's a deepening area of low pressure.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19You can see the cloud head there.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21The centre of the storm, Storm Dylan,

0:00:21 > 0:00:22named by the Irish Met Service,

0:00:22 > 0:00:25will get very close to Northern Ireland

0:00:25 > 0:00:27and then run across Scotland.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31So the Met Office have issued an amber wind warning.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34We're looking at some very strong winds across the southern half

0:00:34 > 0:00:37of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of England,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39but the strongest winds, by the early morning,

0:00:39 > 0:00:41across the north of Northern Ireland

0:00:41 > 0:00:42and the southwest of Scotland -

0:00:42 > 0:00:43gusts of 70mph,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45plus there'll be some wet weather

0:00:45 > 0:00:46in Scotland in the morning.

0:00:46 > 0:00:47In the afternoon, though,

0:00:47 > 0:00:49the winds will have calmed down everywhere.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51There'll be some sunshine around.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53There'll be these bands of showers that come in.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56Those could be potentially heavy.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57A range of temperatures again - north, south.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01Another cold day across Scotland. Much milder across southern England.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03If you're celebrating new year,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05expect some showers around.

0:01:05 > 0:01:06By this stage, though,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08the winds very much lighter across Scotland.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11It will be turning a bit colder as well.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14As we head into the first day of the new year,

0:01:14 > 0:01:15we could see a spell of rain coming

0:01:15 > 0:01:17across the southern parts of England,

0:01:17 > 0:01:18South Wales, for a while.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Really strong winds through the Channel.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Then some sunshine following on behind,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24quite a few showers packing into Scotland,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26Northern Ireland and the northwest of England.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28It gets a little bit colder.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Nothing too cold just yet.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33A little bump of high pressure will tend to fizzle away

0:01:33 > 0:01:35most of those showers,

0:01:35 > 0:01:37but only because we've got a big low pressure

0:01:37 > 0:01:40coming across the Atlantic and these weather systems too.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42This low is a fairly deep one,

0:01:42 > 0:01:44but the centre of it is much further north.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47And we get these bands of rain coming across the UK,

0:01:47 > 0:01:48together with some stronger winds.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50That rain could be quite heavy.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52It takes a while to clear away from eastern areas.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Sunshine and showers follow into Wales and the southwest,

0:01:55 > 0:01:56where it's going to be mild.

0:01:56 > 0:01:57But, again, further north,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59the chance in the colder air in Scotland

0:01:59 > 0:02:02of seeing some snow over the higher ground.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04That area of lower pressure gets elongated

0:02:04 > 0:02:05and stays to the northwest.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Coming around the base of it,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10we get another area of low pressure that's going to deepen.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Looks like the strongest of the winds

0:02:12 > 0:02:14will be more towards the south of the UK,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17coming in to continental Europe,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19but it could be very windy for a while,

0:02:19 > 0:02:20some strong winds, some rain too,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22before things then turn quieter

0:02:22 > 0:02:24by the end of the day

0:02:24 > 0:02:26and we get some sunshine and showers.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Those two areas of low pressure

0:02:28 > 0:02:31then sort of wander their way into Europe.

0:02:31 > 0:02:32Another area of low pressure

0:02:32 > 0:02:34coming in off the Atlantic for Thursday.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36So a very unsettled theme

0:02:36 > 0:02:39for the first few days of the new year.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Probably in between weather systems

0:02:41 > 0:02:43for most of Thursday, so for most of the day,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46it should be fine and dry with some sunshine.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49But we take that unsettled weather into the weekend.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51We have to look at what's happening across the other side

0:02:51 > 0:02:54of the Atlantic with the jet stream diving further

0:02:54 > 0:02:56south across the eastern side of North America.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59We're going to get more amplification of the jet stream.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01That will propagate across the Atlantic.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04It looks like the jet stream is going to be to the

0:03:04 > 0:03:07south of the UK, or at least heading that way, next weekend,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10then we're going to get into some colder air.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14Then the question is how long will that colder air stay?

0:03:14 > 0:03:17It means there'll be some longer drier spells,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19still the threat of some rain and some snow for a while,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22but the main thing is it's going to be turning colder,

0:03:22 > 0:03:24and some models suggest

0:03:24 > 0:03:27perhaps an easterly wind for a time.

0:03:27 > 0:03:28That's it. See you later.
