0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello, there. Some much colder weather is set to arrive

0:00:04 > 0:00:05by the end of this coming weekend,

0:00:05 > 0:00:08but the big question is, how long will it last?

0:00:08 > 0:00:10We'll try and answer that a little later -

0:00:10 > 0:00:11but, before then,

0:00:11 > 0:00:13everything is coming in from the Atlantic,

0:00:13 > 0:00:15so, whilst we get some dips in the temperature,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17on the whole, it's wet and windy air

0:00:17 > 0:00:19that's heading our way.

0:00:19 > 0:00:20This area of low pressure

0:00:20 > 0:00:22bringing in that weather front, there,

0:00:22 > 0:00:23which is this band of rain,

0:00:23 > 0:00:24which briefly falls as snow

0:00:24 > 0:00:26over the tops of the Pennines,

0:00:26 > 0:00:27the hills in Scotland,

0:00:27 > 0:00:28but it doesn't last that long,

0:00:28 > 0:00:31and then the winds pick up from the south-west

0:00:31 > 0:00:32during the afternoon,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35but draw in some brighter conditions eventually.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Those temperatures tend to rise,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39but only ahead of some wet and windy weather

0:00:39 > 0:00:41that's just poking in to Northern Ireland

0:00:41 > 0:00:43by the end of the afternoon,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45and it's this deepening area of low pressure

0:00:45 > 0:00:47we need to keep an eye on, actually,

0:00:47 > 0:00:49because - uncertainty about the exact track of it,

0:00:49 > 0:00:51but there are currently warnings

0:00:51 > 0:00:53of 60-70mph gusts across southern Scotland,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56Northern Ireland and northern England overnight.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57The worst of it should be gone,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59as that low pressure is out in the North Sea

0:00:59 > 0:01:00by Wednesday morning -

0:01:00 > 0:01:02but we're left with widespread gales, really,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04across much of England and Wales on Wednesday,

0:01:04 > 0:01:05a windy day here -

0:01:05 > 0:01:06not as windy further north,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08but there will be a mixture

0:01:08 > 0:01:09of sunshine and showers,

0:01:09 > 0:01:10some heavy showers

0:01:10 > 0:01:12across many northern and western areas of the UK,

0:01:12 > 0:01:15maybe with some hail and thunder in there, too.

0:01:15 > 0:01:16Temperatures 7 to 10 degrees,

0:01:16 > 0:01:17fairly typically,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19so, decent enough temperatures.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Probably gets a bit chillier overnight, though,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23as those strong gale force winds

0:01:23 > 0:01:26tend to ease down slowly but surely

0:01:26 > 0:01:27as that low pressure runs away,

0:01:27 > 0:01:29and ahead of the next one

0:01:29 > 0:01:30coming in from the Atlantic.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33So, we start off chilly and bright in most areas.

0:01:33 > 0:01:34A lot of the showers

0:01:34 > 0:01:36should have gone by this stage,

0:01:36 > 0:01:38but only because we've got this cloud coming in

0:01:38 > 0:01:40from the south-west to give some outbreaks of rain.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Again, how quickly that rain comes in

0:01:42 > 0:01:43from the south-west,

0:01:43 > 0:01:44some uncertainty about that.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46It does draw in milder air,

0:01:46 > 0:01:48but you can see the contrast in temperatures

0:01:48 > 0:01:51south-west to north-east across the UK,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53and then, the position of the low

0:01:53 > 0:01:56could be driven more across Ireland

0:01:56 > 0:01:57into England and Wales,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59keeping Scotland in some slightly colder air -

0:01:59 > 0:02:01and it will feel cold in that wind, as well -

0:02:01 > 0:02:04whereas, just across northern England,

0:02:04 > 0:02:05we've got some heavy rain,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07maybe some snow over the Pennines,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10and these showers rapping in further south

0:02:10 > 0:02:12together with some gale force winds,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14so, it's a windy few days,

0:02:14 > 0:02:15and when the rain comes along,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17it's more likely to be heavy -

0:02:17 > 0:02:19but things will start to change

0:02:19 > 0:02:21as we head into the weekend.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24High pressure coming down from Iceland

0:02:24 > 0:02:26will push away the low pressure

0:02:26 > 0:02:27into the near continent -

0:02:27 > 0:02:29but it's a slow process.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Still got some relatively mild air

0:02:31 > 0:02:32across the south on Saturday,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34we've still got some outbreaks of rain,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36but a north to north-easterly wind

0:02:36 > 0:02:38starting to cut in behind that,

0:02:38 > 0:02:41dropping the temperatures, making it feel colder

0:02:41 > 0:02:43and bringing in some showers

0:02:43 > 0:02:45around that area of high pressure,

0:02:45 > 0:02:46and that high pressure

0:02:46 > 0:02:49looks like it's going to build down slowly

0:02:49 > 0:02:50across the UK

0:02:50 > 0:02:53as we head into the second half of the weekend,

0:02:53 > 0:02:55and perhaps into the beginning of the next week.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57So, with that high pressure around,

0:02:57 > 0:02:59we're drawing down some cold air,

0:02:59 > 0:03:00it is going to be turning colder.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02For a while, ahead of it,

0:03:02 > 0:03:03there'll be some gale force winds

0:03:03 > 0:03:04making it feel cold,

0:03:04 > 0:03:05drawing in some wintry showers,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07but we could see a spell

0:03:07 > 0:03:09of drier but colder conditions.

0:03:09 > 0:03:10Now, how long is it going to last?

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Well, if we look back out in the Atlantic,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15we've got a strengthening jet

0:03:15 > 0:03:17that's propagating across the Atlantic,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19and it's meeting that block

0:03:19 > 0:03:20with that area of high pressure.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Signs are that as we head into next week,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25we may push that high pressure away,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27draw in Atlantic air

0:03:27 > 0:03:29and bring, for a while, some snow.
