0:00:04 > 0:00:05Stormy start to 2018.

0:00:05 > 0:00:07Let me show you the big picture first of all

0:00:07 > 0:00:09and let's have a look at North America

0:00:09 > 0:00:13because here we've seen some very cold weather developing.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15The blue colours,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17big dip here in the jet stream

0:00:17 > 0:00:19dragging the cold air out of Arctic

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Canada and the jet stream shoots across here,

0:00:22 > 0:00:24the big contrast in temperature creates

0:00:24 > 0:00:26a very powerful jet stream and that

0:00:26 > 0:00:31in turn develops the storms closer to home, closer to the ground.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35One of these vortexes, Storm Eleanor, crossing

0:00:35 > 0:00:39the UK and bringing some disruption.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Through the early hours of the morning we will have seen

0:00:41 > 0:00:45winds possibly to even 90mph along some of the exposed coasts,

0:00:45 > 0:00:4770 or more inland.

0:00:47 > 0:00:53Further south, 50, 60, 70mph further south.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56Even more than that so a really rough start to the day

0:00:56 > 0:01:00and the winds continue to blow hard during the course

0:01:00 > 0:01:03of the morning into the afternoon. Gale force winds.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06By then we will have seen more disruption across southern

0:01:06 > 0:01:07areas as well.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09Perhaps some tree damage but also

0:01:09 > 0:01:11some sunshine so it's not all bad.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14There will be some lulls in the wind

0:01:14 > 0:01:17and some glimmers of sunshine around as well.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19As we head into Thursday,

0:01:19 > 0:01:23this is remnants of Storm Eleanor there, another low pressure

0:01:23 > 0:01:26comes in and this is also going to bring gale force winds.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28Not the level of Eleanor

0:01:28 > 0:01:30but still gales expected across the

0:01:30 > 0:01:33south coast for a time on Thursday.

0:01:33 > 0:01:38Windy around western areas. More of a run of the mill winter gale.

0:01:38 > 0:01:44Thursday night into Friday we see that low pressure pulling out into

0:01:44 > 0:01:47the North Sea and then Friday

0:01:47 > 0:01:50itself a mixture of sunshine and rain.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54Looks like there will be a swathe of rain across northern

0:01:54 > 0:01:56areas of England, maybe Wales too.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Turning wintry across the Scottish hills.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01The winds are starting to turn direction,

0:02:01 > 0:02:04we're seeing temperatures dipping to single figures.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Just about 10 in the Channel Islands.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Then there is a marked change as we head towards Friday and the weekend.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13These isobars are coming from the north,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15that's the direction the wind takes.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19The wind follows these isobars so look at these northerly winds,

0:02:19 > 0:02:22maybe wintry showers across the north.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Mostly across the hills but not exclusively.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Temperatures only 2-4 degrees so certainly turning

0:02:28 > 0:02:34colder into the weekend, Saturday and Sunday looking chilly.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37There's also going to be some sunshine with

0:02:37 > 0:02:41the possibility of a bit of morning frost and fog around.

0:02:41 > 0:02:46But if you're wrapped up warmly it's not going to be too bad a weekend.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Beyond that into Sunday night and Monday,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52looks like the high pressure establishes itself across the UK

0:02:52 > 0:02:55and that means a block in the weather patterns

0:02:55 > 0:02:58so these lows here running up against it and then they can't

0:02:58 > 0:03:01go further towards the east cos that's what high pressures do.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04You can see that pattern on the jet stream, it's racing across the

0:03:04 > 0:03:09Atlantic, then encounters the high pressure and does this

0:03:09 > 0:03:12sort of thing but we get a bit of an arm of the jet stream

0:03:12 > 0:03:14coming in from the north so we get

0:03:14 > 0:03:16that cold air out of the north.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18But it looks like second week of January the winds will be

0:03:18 > 0:03:24lighter and we'll see some frost and fog forming but in the short

0:03:24 > 0:03:26term we've got Storm Eleanor and a bit of wind

0:03:26 > 0:03:27and rain before it calms down.
