0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. After our stormy, unsettled start to 2018,

0:00:04 > 0:00:06the weather's been turning quieter and colder

0:00:06 > 0:00:08over the past 24 hours,

0:00:08 > 0:00:09and that theme should continue

0:00:09 > 0:00:11into the weekend.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14We've already seen snow - this is the hills over Staffordshire -

0:00:14 > 0:00:17but this is nothing compared to what's happening

0:00:17 > 0:00:19the other side of the Atlantic.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21Here's how it's looking in Boston at the moment.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Some parts of the northeast US

0:00:23 > 0:00:27have seen up to 18 inches of snowfall, that's 46cm,

0:00:27 > 0:00:30and this storm system that deepened very rapidly

0:00:30 > 0:00:32has bringing not only a lot of heavy snow,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35heavy rain and really strong winds,

0:00:35 > 0:00:38so explosive cyclogenesis that we've seen,

0:00:38 > 0:00:40the rapid deepening of this system,

0:00:40 > 0:00:43which is now drifting its way further northwards,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46and that low pressure will head up towards Greenland.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48It's not moving its way across the Atlantic -

0:00:48 > 0:00:51we've got high pressure building across our shores,

0:00:51 > 0:00:54and as that high pressure builds across northern parts,

0:00:54 > 0:00:56we'll be importing this cold air

0:00:56 > 0:00:58from a north or north-easterly direction

0:00:58 > 0:01:00through the weekend.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02That'll bring colder weather but also more sunshine eventually.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05For Saturday, certainly across the southern half

0:01:05 > 0:01:07of the country, still a lot of cloud

0:01:07 > 0:01:10and showery rain, particularly along the south coast.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Further north,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14more sunshine here.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16Just a few wintry flurries

0:01:16 > 0:01:19blowing in on that north-easterly breeze,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21and temperatures 3 to 8 degrees.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Moving into Saturday night,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26and the cloud and rain in the south

0:01:26 > 0:01:28gradually get pushed south

0:01:28 > 0:01:31and then clearer skies across the country.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32As the wind's so light,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34it could be a particularly cold night.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37We could see minus 4 in towns and cities,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39though sheltered glens could see minus 10.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Widely, a subzero start to Sunday morning.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Expect a sharp frost and the potential for icy stretches.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Sunday's looking like a really decent day.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Lots of sunshine. Most places should stay dry.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Chance of a shower along the south coast.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Temperatures on the chilly side in Scotland,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58barely getting above freezing all day.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Further south, we could see 5 to 7 degrees.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Heading into Monday,

0:02:03 > 0:02:05high pressure still not far away

0:02:05 > 0:02:07but it's changed positions -

0:02:07 > 0:02:08sitting across Scandinavia -

0:02:08 > 0:02:12so winds from an east or south-easterly direction.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16We'll see a bit more cloud coming in from the near Continent,

0:02:16 > 0:02:18particularly affecting southern parts.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Further north, you're more likely to see

0:02:21 > 0:02:23that sunshine lasting through the day,

0:02:23 > 0:02:25but it's largely dry, if somewhat grey.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27A similar picture on Tuesday,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30increasing amounts of cloud moving in from south,

0:02:30 > 0:02:32could be the odd spot of drizzle.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34A weather front waiting in the wings.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Ahead of that, 4 to 7 degrees.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Shouldn't feel too bad,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42although it will be cloudy and drizzly for some of us.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45By Wednesday, that frontal system tries to push its way eastwards.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Some uncertainty about how far it's going to get,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51but it does look like we'll see something windier and wetter

0:02:51 > 0:02:54heading in from the west later on in the day,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57and those temperatures starting to creep up a notch too.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59As we look through the latter part

0:02:59 > 0:03:01of next week, the jet stream,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03which drives our low pressure systems,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05is going to be sitting in the Atlantic, diving its way south,

0:03:05 > 0:03:08but as we head towards the end of the week,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10you can see the change in the wind direction,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13coming from a west or even south-westerly direction.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16That is going to import some milder air.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18So temperatures turning milder

0:03:18 > 0:03:19from the west. There'll be the

0:03:19 > 0:03:21arrival of rain and strong winds

0:03:21 > 0:03:23moving eastwards. Potential for

0:03:23 > 0:03:25some snow as the rain bumps into

0:03:25 > 0:03:26that cold air. We'll keep you

0:03:26 > 0:03:28up to date once again tomorrow.

0:03:28 > 0:03:29Bye for now.
