0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello. The Arctic blast across North America has been well documented.

0:00:05 > 0:00:07Well, I'm pleased to say the storm has moved away.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11Slowly but surely, things will get a little less cold as that

0:00:11 > 0:00:13storm pushes off towards Greenland.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15We've been asked here at the Weather Centre,

0:00:15 > 0:00:18is it heading in our direction, and the straight answer is no.

0:00:18 > 0:00:22We're still under this influence of high pressure, and for us Sunday is

0:00:22 > 0:00:26going to be cold, clear but quite quiet,

0:00:26 > 0:00:28with the storm staying out into the Atlantic.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31So, it's going to be a hard frost first thing on Sunday morning,

0:00:31 > 0:00:34temperatures in rural parts of sheltered glens in Scotland

0:00:34 > 0:00:38well down, as low as minus ten, maybe even lower, but eventually

0:00:38 > 0:00:41we'll see some sparkling skies, some lovely sunshine for all of us.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43A little bit more of a breeze down towards the south-east,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46but temperatures will slowly recover here, four to seven degrees.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Still a little bit disappointing in Scotland,

0:00:49 > 0:00:51zero to three as a daytime maximum.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54We could see clear skies here across the north

0:00:54 > 0:00:58and a hard frost again as we head into Monday morning,

0:00:58 > 0:01:00but again the breeze will strengthen,

0:01:00 > 0:01:03and down towards the south and east there'll be a little more cloud,

0:01:03 > 0:01:06so temperatures will hold up first thing Monday morning,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08slightly above freezing. Not particularly warm, is it?

0:01:08 > 0:01:11But further north, again it's a cold and frosty start. But on Monday,

0:01:11 > 0:01:14that's where we're likely to see the best of the sunshine,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16through Scotland and Northern Ireland

0:01:16 > 0:01:18and maybe northern England, because that easterly wind

0:01:18 > 0:01:21is driving in more cloud across England and Wales.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24It's going to feel cold and drab, a January afternoon,

0:01:24 > 0:01:27not particularly pleasant, four to six degrees but feeling colder.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31The best of the sunshine may be further north and west.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35As we move out of Monday into Tuesday, it gets a little bit messy.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38We still keep a south-easterly breeze, which will keep some cloud

0:01:38 > 0:01:40and a cool feel along North Sea coasts,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42but at the same time this weather front is trying to

0:01:42 > 0:01:46push in from the Atlantic, and that will drag with it ahead of it

0:01:46 > 0:01:48a southerly wind, so slightly milder air.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51So a real west/east divide on Tuesday.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Along that east coast, where it stays cloudy and cool,

0:01:54 > 0:01:58four or five degrees. Further south and west, double digits return.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Now, this is going to be the difference between this

0:02:00 > 0:02:02weather front turning to snow or rain.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04Because it's bumping into slightly milder air,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07we're not too concerned about it in terms of snowfall.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Any snow that we do get from it will be to higher

0:02:09 > 0:02:13ground across Scotland, and that weather front is going to linger

0:02:13 > 0:02:16for quite some time on Wednesday, particularly up into the north.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20So it'll grind to a halt, it'll be rain, snow to higher ground.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Elsewhere a slightly milder feel, but a fair amount of cloud.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26The showery bits and pieces continue for much of Wednesday afternoon.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Signs of something a little bit brighter by the end of the day.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32A brief ridge will take over on Thursday.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34So a west/east divide, really, on Thursday,

0:02:34 > 0:02:38the best of the sunshine further west after a chilly start.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Further east we keep a little bit of cloud coming off the North Sea,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44so here temperatures slightly disappointing.

0:02:44 > 0:02:45Now, further ahead,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48it looks as though we're going to see a bit of a west/east

0:02:48 > 0:02:50divide developing, with a high pressure system

0:02:50 > 0:02:52sitting in Scandinavia keeping things relatively quiet.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54The jet stream has been quite weak,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57but there are indications at the end of the week that we'll see

0:02:57 > 0:02:58a strengthening jet,

0:02:58 > 0:03:02and that could try to push in low pressures from the west.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05That means that the further north and west you live, there is

0:03:05 > 0:03:07the potential that we could see some wetter

0:03:07 > 0:03:09and at times pretty windy weather,

0:03:09 > 0:03:14but it does look as though further east things might stay pretty quiet.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17The best of the drier weather is likely to be in the eastern areas.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20The south-east could see a problem with frost and fog,

0:03:20 > 0:03:22classic January mornings.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25There is still a great deal of uncertainty as to the

0:03:25 > 0:03:28longer-term outlook, and I'll firm up on this tomorrow. Take care.
