0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello, there. Over the weekend, all of the weather excitement

0:00:04 > 0:00:07was at the other side of the Atlantic in the US and Canada.

0:00:07 > 0:00:08To start this week, though,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10the interest has turned to our side of the Atlantic.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12We saw snowfall in the Sahara,

0:00:12 > 0:00:13about a metre and a half's worth

0:00:13 > 0:00:14of snowfall

0:00:14 > 0:00:15in the space of 24 hours

0:00:15 > 0:00:16in alpine regions.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18Extreme avalanche risk here,

0:00:18 > 0:00:19as well, at the moment -

0:00:19 > 0:00:21whereas, for us,

0:00:21 > 0:00:22well, we had grey,

0:00:22 > 0:00:23and lots of it, as well.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25So, what has been happening?

0:00:25 > 0:00:26Well, the cold weather

0:00:26 > 0:00:27across the US and Canada

0:00:27 > 0:00:29certainly fired up a very active jet stream

0:00:29 > 0:00:30across the Atlantic -

0:00:30 > 0:00:32but notice, as it gets towards us,

0:00:32 > 0:00:33it's dived down towards the south,

0:00:33 > 0:00:34taking that cold air

0:00:34 > 0:00:36towards southern parts of Europe

0:00:36 > 0:00:37and north Africa,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39leaving us in a fairly slack airflow.

0:00:39 > 0:00:40Not much in the way of wind,

0:00:40 > 0:00:42not much changing day by day,

0:00:42 > 0:00:44and not much to push this weather front

0:00:44 > 0:00:46eastwards across the country this morning -

0:00:46 > 0:00:47but that weather front,

0:00:47 > 0:00:48as it arrives through the night

0:00:48 > 0:00:49into the morning,

0:00:49 > 0:00:52will introduce some brighter conditions into the west.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53Gone is the grey -

0:00:53 > 0:00:54but there will be some lingering fog

0:00:54 > 0:00:56in Northern Ireland after an icy start,

0:00:56 > 0:00:58the odd pocket of frost in other western areas,

0:00:58 > 0:00:59but a dry and bright day ahead.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Still grey, though, with that weather front

0:01:01 > 0:01:02slowly moving across

0:01:02 > 0:01:03northern and eastern Scotland,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05and, for some eastern coastal counties of England,

0:01:05 > 0:01:07some patchy rain and drizzle.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09For you, maybe another day of grey to come.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10Temperatures, though, up on what we've seen

0:01:10 > 0:01:12over the past couple of days,

0:01:12 > 0:01:13and, given a bit more sunshine,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15lighter winds, that will feel quite pleasant -

0:01:15 > 0:01:16but then we have that problem.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Light winds, clear skies through the night,

0:01:18 > 0:01:20sharp, plunging temperatures.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Still wet through the night into Thursday

0:01:22 > 0:01:23across the far north-east of Scotland,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25showers for a time across the south-west,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27which will gradually fade

0:01:27 > 0:01:29in between some dense patches of fog forming,

0:01:29 > 0:01:31and just about anywhere could see some frost,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33maybe some ice on the ground,

0:01:33 > 0:01:34to start Thursday morning.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36As we look at the chart for Thursday,

0:01:36 > 0:01:38still not many isobars across the UK,

0:01:38 > 0:01:39so, once you've got the fog,

0:01:39 > 0:01:40not much wind to clear it.

0:01:40 > 0:01:41A ridge of high pressure,

0:01:41 > 0:01:42still a bit of rain

0:01:42 > 0:01:44across the far north-east of Scotland,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46particularly for Orkney and Shetland.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47Shetland the only place

0:01:47 > 0:01:48seeing any noticeable breeze -

0:01:48 > 0:01:50but mist and fog could be a problem

0:01:50 > 0:01:51through the Midlands towards East Anglia

0:01:51 > 0:01:52and the south-east,

0:01:52 > 0:01:54and where you've got it, you could linger all day.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Temperatures struggling, 2 or 3 degrees at best.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Elsewhere, temperatures down on Wednesday,

0:01:58 > 0:02:00still a reasonable amount of sunshine

0:02:00 > 0:02:01for the north and west of the UK.

0:02:01 > 0:02:02Now, we do it all again

0:02:02 > 0:02:04through Thursday night to Friday.

0:02:04 > 0:02:05A ridge of high pressure still with us,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07but signs of something changing into the west.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Breeze picking up on Friday across some western areas

0:02:09 > 0:02:11clearing any morning mist and fog here,

0:02:11 > 0:02:13breaking the cloud up, some sunny spells,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15then rain into Ireland later on.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Much of Scotland, England and Wales stays dry.

0:02:17 > 0:02:18A few in the east

0:02:18 > 0:02:20will hold on to those fog patches.

0:02:20 > 0:02:21By the time we hit the weekend,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23we've got another weather front

0:02:23 > 0:02:24trying to push its way eastwards.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26There's not much in the way of breeze

0:02:26 > 0:02:28on the back edge of this, again,

0:02:28 > 0:02:29so, we start with the rain in the west.

0:02:29 > 0:02:30Beware, though,

0:02:30 > 0:02:32this could be a little bit further east,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34could be a little bit further west, as well -

0:02:34 > 0:02:35but where it does,

0:02:35 > 0:02:36rain on and off all day long,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39but it will tend to fizzle in situ, really,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41with just winds blowing north to south,

0:02:41 > 0:02:43rather than across it.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46So, a damp day on Sunday, patchy rain and drizzle,

0:02:46 > 0:02:47and then another weather front

0:02:47 > 0:02:49is going to have another attempt

0:02:49 > 0:02:51to bring changes our way -

0:02:51 > 0:02:53and this time it could be a bit more successful,

0:02:53 > 0:02:54with some heavy rain into the west

0:02:54 > 0:02:56by the time we finish the weekend.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58So, that takes us into early next week.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00The jet stream wakens up a little bit

0:03:00 > 0:03:01and starts to push towards us,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03introducing a bit more mobility

0:03:03 > 0:03:04to our weather conditions,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06and taking this area of low pressure

0:03:06 > 0:03:08from Iceland down towards us.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10It's going to be a gradual process,

0:03:10 > 0:03:12but it will bring a noticeable change

0:03:12 > 0:03:13into next week,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15after a spell of rain early on,

0:03:15 > 0:03:16moving from west to east,

0:03:16 > 0:03:17it's going to turn windier

0:03:17 > 0:03:18across the country.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Those winds going into a north-westerly direction -

0:03:21 > 0:03:22so, a chilly direction -

0:03:22 > 0:03:23and, so, sunshine and showers

0:03:23 > 0:03:25to take us through a good part of the week,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27but, with temperatures dropping again,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29those showers in the west could turn wintry.
