0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. If you're fed up of the almost relentless greyness

0:00:04 > 0:00:07of the skies over this past week, things are about to change.

0:00:07 > 0:00:09We're about to see a bit more sunshine but a marked change

0:00:09 > 0:00:11in the way the weather feels. Bringing about the

0:00:11 > 0:00:14change is this weather front which on Sunday is way to

0:00:14 > 0:00:16the north-west in the UK to begin with, it's going to be

0:00:16 > 0:00:18driven towards us by a strengthening jet stream.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21Before it arrives, well, it's more of the same for Sunday -

0:00:21 > 0:00:22for many of you, at least.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24Lots of cloud around, the odd spot of light rain

0:00:24 > 0:00:26or drizzle, maybe a better chance into the afternoon

0:00:26 > 0:00:28of a few cloud breaks here and there, bit of

0:00:28 > 0:00:30sunshine coming through, particularly across

0:00:30 > 0:00:32parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland as the

0:00:32 > 0:00:34breeze starts to strengthen. That strengthening breeze

0:00:34 > 0:00:36is only a sign of the change getting closer and closer.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38These are your afternoon temperatures for

0:00:38 > 0:00:41Sunday, little bit down on Saturday's values,

0:00:41 > 0:00:42but where they should be for the time of year.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45So here comes the change. Up towards Western Scotland

0:00:45 > 0:00:47and Northern Ireland, a spell of heavy rain

0:00:47 > 0:00:49and strong to gale force if not sever gale force winds.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53Accompanying it is that band of rain. Active weather

0:00:53 > 0:00:55front pushes its way southwards and eastwards across all

0:00:55 > 0:00:58parts through Sunday night and into Monday morning.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01On the charts, by the time we start Monday morning it's

0:01:01 > 0:01:03towards the south and east, but follow the isobars

0:01:03 > 0:01:05back behind it, it's coming from a very cold source,

0:01:05 > 0:01:09Greenland, northern parts of Canada, and that colder air

0:01:09 > 0:01:11will be pushing southwards and eastwards as we go

0:01:11 > 0:01:15through Monday, introducing a marked change for all of us.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17So let's take you through Monday. If you're up early

0:01:17 > 0:01:20and commuting across East Anglia and the south-east

0:01:20 > 0:01:22it'll be a wet and very windy start. Still gales around

0:01:22 > 0:01:24across parts of England and Wales first light

0:01:24 > 0:01:27on Monday morning. Persistent rain gets out the way

0:01:27 > 0:01:29during the morning, then some sunny conditions developing

0:01:29 > 0:01:32but a scattering of showers, showers possible just about

0:01:32 > 0:01:34anywhere into the afternoon. Most frequent to north

0:01:34 > 0:01:37and west and as temperatures drop through the day

0:01:37 > 0:01:39those showers will turn increasingly wintry,

0:01:39 > 0:01:41initially across parts of Western Scotland and

0:01:41 > 0:01:42Northern Ireland.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45But the wintry weather will become a bit more extensive

0:01:45 > 0:01:47into Tuesday as we see those north-westerly winds

0:01:47 > 0:01:50bring in yet colder and colder air.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53The showers will push across just about anywhere,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56given the strength of the wind. Most frequent in the west,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58heavy with hail and thunder and some sleet and snow,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01some of the snow coming to low levels across parts

0:02:01 > 0:02:03of Scotland. Northern Ireland and northern England, too,

0:02:03 > 0:02:07get a slight covering in places. And we stick with that flow

0:02:07 > 0:02:11of air across the UK, it's a mixture of sunshine and

0:02:11 > 0:02:14frequent showers, showers still at the heaviest

0:02:14 > 0:02:16towards the north and the west and an added wind chill

0:02:16 > 0:02:19across the country, so wherever you are through Tuesday

0:02:19 > 0:02:23and Wednesday, it will feel colder than the thermometer suggests.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26But we've got to watch this on Wednesday night,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28we could see in that run of north-westerly winds

0:02:28 > 0:02:30a very nasty area of low pressure develop.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32It looks like it's set to track across the southern

0:02:32 > 0:02:35half of the country, but its exact position will be crucial

0:02:35 > 0:02:38because on the southern flank of it we'll see the strongest

0:02:38 > 0:02:40of the winds, maybe severe gales through the night

0:02:40 > 0:02:42into Thursday, some snow on the northern flank of the

0:02:42 > 0:02:44low pressure system, but it does clear off into the

0:02:44 > 0:02:46near continent very, very quickly indeed.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48So it's going to be an overnight feature,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51so for Thursday sunshine and wintry showers probably sums it up.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54End of the week we've got that run of north-westerly winds

0:02:54 > 0:02:56with high pressure to the south-west,

0:02:56 > 0:02:57low pressure to the north,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00this is the continuous direction we get the winds coming in from,

0:03:00 > 0:03:03but as we go through the weekend that area of low pressure finally

0:03:03 > 0:03:05takes some movement off into the near continent,

0:03:05 > 0:03:09allowing a more northerly air flow to set up. That's still going to be

0:03:09 > 0:03:10feeding in some pretty cold air

0:03:10 > 0:03:13but as winds fall lighter the story into the weekend

0:03:13 > 0:03:14may be fewer showers

0:03:14 > 0:03:17but increasing risk of some pretty sharp overnight frost.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20So for the next ten days, get Sunday out the way,

0:03:20 > 0:03:22the winds pick up, it turns colder and wintry,

0:03:22 > 0:03:23made to feel much colder

0:03:23 > 0:03:25given the strength of the winds

0:03:25 > 0:03:27but into the weekend it's those

0:03:27 > 0:03:30overnight frosts which will return.
