0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. The Atlantic jet stream awakens this week.

0:00:04 > 0:00:06Not only does it mean faster flight times from the US to the UK,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08but for us, weather-wise,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10a big change compared to conditions of the past few weeks.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13We're bringing colder air our way for the week ahead.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15Some significant snow at times, for the mountains at least,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17in Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England,

0:00:17 > 0:00:21but across the board, much windier conditions for all of us.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24And those windier conditions setting into the start of Monday.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26Overnight, this weather front pushing its way southwards

0:00:26 > 0:00:28and eastwards, bringing gales and severe gales. It then opens

0:00:28 > 0:00:30the door to polar maritime air coming in from the north-west.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33That'll be in place across northern Scotland to begin with.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35A chillier start here, some showers already wintry.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37England and Wales though, lots of cloud, outbreaks of rain -

0:00:37 > 0:00:40most persistent for the morning rush-hour. East Anglia

0:00:40 > 0:00:42and the south-east will take till the afternoon before you see

0:00:42 > 0:00:44a little bit of sunshine, but elsewhere,

0:00:44 > 0:00:45sunny spells, scattering of showers through the afternoon,

0:00:45 > 0:00:47some heavy with hail and thunder. Sleet

0:00:47 > 0:00:50and snow across parts of Scotland and later Northern Ireland, where

0:00:50 > 0:00:54temperatures will drop to around three or four during the afternoon.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Now, snow showers become a bit more abundant through Monday

0:00:57 > 0:00:58night into Tuesday and turning increasingly

0:00:58 > 0:01:00wintry across northern England, Northern Ireland too.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03In between them some very icy conditions around

0:01:03 > 0:01:06and that'll be the story for much of this week, as we continue with

0:01:06 > 0:01:11a general north-westerly airflow continuing to feed cold air our way.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14So into Tuesday, risk of ice, sleet and snow across northern

0:01:14 > 0:01:16England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, even to lower levels at times.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19The snow risk further south is mainly on the hills.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21Showers here will be of sleet, rain and hail.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25In between, always see a little bit of sunshine, but when the showers

0:01:25 > 0:01:28come your way, you will notice the wind-chill more than anything else,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30especially when you consider wind-chill values

0:01:30 > 0:01:32well below freezing.

0:01:32 > 0:01:33So, a cold day on Tuesday,

0:01:33 > 0:01:36cold night to come to take us into Wednesday.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Still got isobars packed in on the chart,

0:01:38 > 0:01:40coming in from the north-west.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Still a noticeable wind-chill for all on Wednesday.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46Sunshine and showers name of the game again and the snow amounts

0:01:46 > 0:01:48continuing to tot up across the hills of Scotland, Northern Ireland

0:01:48 > 0:01:51and potentially northern parts of England.

0:01:51 > 0:01:52Now, for midweek we've got

0:01:52 > 0:01:55that Atlantic jet stream quite strong at times now.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58The problem is, with such a strong jet stream running towards us,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01when you get subtle variations in wind speed on it,

0:02:01 > 0:02:02subtle variations in direction,

0:02:02 > 0:02:06we can see it develop quite rapidly, some potent areas of low pressure.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10Now, all models are pointing to the risk of a significant low-pressure

0:02:10 > 0:02:13system zipping across the UK through Wednesday night into Thursday.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15The big question is the exact position of it,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17how deep it is and so, how stormy it will be.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19The stormiest conditions will be in the southern flank.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22At the moment, England and Wales could bear the brunt of that.

0:02:22 > 0:02:23Gales and severe gales into the start of Thursday.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Snow as it clears away,

0:02:25 > 0:02:28but it's the wind that's the biggest concern at the moment.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30And that low pressure system does zip off quite quickly on Thursday,

0:02:30 > 0:02:34putting us back into sunshine and blustery showers and back to those

0:02:34 > 0:02:37north-westerly winds we'll have seen on Tuesday and Wednesday.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40So Friday, very similar to Tuesday and Wednesday -

0:02:40 > 0:02:42sunshine and showers, showers most frequent to the north

0:02:42 > 0:02:45and the west, and wintry across parts of Scotland, northern England

0:02:45 > 0:02:49and Northern Ireland in particular, with an added wind-chill.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Into the weekend, it looks like low pressure will be to the east

0:02:51 > 0:02:53of us by this stage, so the winds

0:02:53 > 0:02:54will go even more northerly for a time.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58Still feeding in some very cold air but starting to ease a little bit.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00That means that into the start of the weekend at least,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02we could have significant overnight frost.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06The question is how many frosty nights we'll see because

0:03:06 > 0:03:08of how quickly things will change later in the weekend into next week.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Some models are starting to point to the fact of low pressure

0:03:11 > 0:03:13moving into the west once again and if that does,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15we'll start to drag our air back in from the south.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19So after quite a windy and wintry spell, with much colder

0:03:19 > 0:03:22conditions of late, by the end of the weekend, maybe into next

0:03:22 > 0:03:25week, things could be turning milder and with it wetter and windier.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28We'll keep you updated on that though as we go through

0:03:28 > 0:03:29the coming days. Take care.
