0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello there. Christmas may well have come and gone,

0:00:04 > 0:00:07but the carol In The Bleak Midwinter still holds fast and true.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10Tuesday was a miserable January day for the far

0:00:10 > 0:00:13north of the country, through Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15It was windy, with frequent snow showers.

0:00:15 > 0:00:16I think I'D have been grumpy,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19trying to get anywhere in these kind of conditions.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Some lying snow across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24It made for some pretty pictures,

0:00:24 > 0:00:27but I'm sure at times it was a little tedious.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Now, the cold air really descends right across the country,

0:00:30 > 0:00:33and it stays with us for most of the week.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36In fact, today, though, the showers will start to ease a little.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39We'll still have some wintry showers into the far north-west this

0:00:39 > 0:00:40afternoon, but as you can see,

0:00:40 > 0:00:42there will be some decent sunny spells.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45It'll still be quite windy, and still a cold source,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48so despite those thermometers saying five to seven degrees

0:00:48 > 0:00:51across England and Wales, it will feel colder than that,

0:00:51 > 0:00:55and on exposed west-facing coasts it really will still feel quite bitter.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58As we move into Thursday morning,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01in the early hours we've got this deepening area of low pressure,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03and on the southern flank of that

0:01:03 > 0:01:05we could see gales or severe gales for a time,

0:01:05 > 0:01:08and on the leading edge we're going to see a spell of snow,

0:01:08 > 0:01:11particularly across central and southern areas of Scotland.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14It rattles away quite quickly

0:01:14 > 0:01:17and then leaves a trail of showers behind, but still pretty

0:01:17 > 0:01:20windy with it, and that's still going to make it feel quite chilly.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23So a rash of showers as we go through the day on Thursday

0:01:23 > 0:01:25but sunny spells and scattered showers,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27the worst of the weather easing away by then.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31But two or three degrees is not going to feel great into the north.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35We should see higher values further south of six to nine.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Now, as we move out of Thursday into Friday, we've still got low pressure

0:01:38 > 0:01:42centred to the north, and that could still produce some windy

0:01:42 > 0:01:44conditions across the far north-west and a scattering of showers,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48but things will quieten down as we head towards the weekend.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Friday will see a scattering of showers to the north and west

0:01:50 > 0:01:53and still with a wintry flavour in there, as well,

0:01:53 > 0:01:54and still quite windy and cold.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57Further south, we keep some decent spells of sunshine

0:01:57 > 0:02:00and, in comparison to last week, when it was cloudy, grey,

0:02:00 > 0:02:04dull and miserable, many of us will be happy with this kind of weather.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Now, as we move out of Friday into Saturday,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09we see this brief little ridge of high pressure building.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12That'll quieten things down for the start of the weekend, but

0:02:12 > 0:02:16potentially it could lead to lighter winds and a cold and frosty start.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20So, first thing on Saturday morning, it could certainly

0:02:20 > 0:02:24be notably cold and frosty, but it should be dry and sunny

0:02:24 > 0:02:26and, with lighter winds, not too bad a day.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28As you can see, quite quiet.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30So temperatures will probably peak by the middle of the afternoon

0:02:30 > 0:02:34at around two or three degrees again to the north, four to seven,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36but with lighter winds and some sunshine, not too bad.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39Now, as we move out of Saturday into Sunday,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43we could see a chilly start, but there is a slight question mark

0:02:43 > 0:02:46with this weather front trying to push in.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48So, cold and frosty with some decent spells of sunshine.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52A level of uncertainty as to the timings of this weather front.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54You'll need to keep watching the forecast for Sunday.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57And again on the leading edge as it bumps into that cold air

0:02:57 > 0:03:00we might see some snow for a time.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03But once we move out of Sunday, once that weather front moves through,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06things will start to become quite unsettled.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08The jet stream will continue to drive in low

0:03:08 > 0:03:11pressures for the longer six-to-ten-day period.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15So it does look as though the weather story is set to change.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18And as we move into next week, it'll be quite unsettled,

0:03:18 > 0:03:20windy with gales at times

0:03:20 > 0:03:23but temperatures perhaps where they should be for this time of year.

0:03:23 > 0:03:28So we lose that cold, wintry flavour at least into next week.
