0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. Cold for all, snow for some.
0:00:04 > 0:00:06That's how this week's weather has played out so far.
0:00:06 > 0:00:10Changes, though, next week. This week, we've been in the cold air
0:00:10 > 0:00:13on a chilly north-westerly wind coming around low pressure
0:00:13 > 0:00:17close to Iceland. Now, next week, a transformation,
0:00:17 > 0:00:20something closer to average, even mild for some of us
0:00:20 > 0:00:23but we still have low pressure close to Iceland,
0:00:23 > 0:00:27so how can you keep that here, but one week have a cold wind,
0:00:27 > 0:00:30the next week have a milder wind? Keep watching, for the answer.
0:00:30 > 0:00:34But right now, the cold weather and the disruptive cold weather
0:00:34 > 0:00:37in the form of either snow or wind keeps with us.
0:00:37 > 0:00:40This area of low pressure brings some problems going into
0:00:40 > 0:00:42Thursday morning, particularly with snow - parts of Scotland,
0:00:42 > 0:00:45northern England, with wind across parts of England and Wales.
0:00:45 > 0:00:48Now, both aspects ease quite quickly going into Thursday morning
0:00:48 > 0:00:51but there could still be an impact on travel for some of us,
0:00:51 > 0:00:53so do check before you head out.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56We're left, as Thursday goes on, with the chilly
0:00:56 > 0:00:59west north-westerly wind, sunny spells and showers.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01Frequent showers coming in towards the north-west of the UK,
0:01:01 > 0:01:04I think, increasingly of snow to lower levels later in the day
0:01:04 > 0:01:07and still feeling at or below freezing for northern England,
0:01:07 > 0:01:10for Scotland, for Northern Ireland.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13And going into Friday as well, our weather pattern stays
0:01:13 > 0:01:16very similar. Still the bulk of the wintry showers,
0:01:16 > 0:01:19of rain, sleet, snow coming in towards the north-west
0:01:19 > 0:01:21of the UK. The further south and east you are,
0:01:21 > 0:01:24you are more likely to stay dry and see some sunshine
0:01:24 > 0:01:26and temperatures are very similar. Now, a bit of a change going
0:01:26 > 0:01:29into the start of the weekend. The gap between weather systems -
0:01:29 > 0:01:32cold, frosty, icy start... But actually a lot of fine weather
0:01:32 > 0:01:35on Saturday. Still one or two wintry showers around
0:01:35 > 0:01:39but a lot of people will stay dry. Increasing cloud across southern
0:01:39 > 0:01:42parts of the UK, though, ahead of the next weather system coming in
0:01:42 > 0:01:45for part two of the weekend. And here it comes and it is of course
0:01:45 > 0:01:49bumping into cold air across us, so although there's rain coming in,
0:01:49 > 0:01:53some of us will see some snow, particularly on the leading
0:01:53 > 0:01:56edge of this and particularly across northern England,
0:01:56 > 0:01:59parts of Scotland, as it moves in. So we have to keep watching
0:01:59 > 0:02:02Sunday's weather for any impact on travel. The winds start to pick
0:02:02 > 0:02:05up again with this, as well, but somewhat milder air following
0:02:05 > 0:02:09towards the south-west of the UK. Any breaks between weather systems
0:02:09 > 0:02:11all too short because another one coming in for Monday,
0:02:11 > 0:02:14though there's a lot of uncertainty about the detail of this
0:02:14 > 0:02:16but wet, windy but notice the bulk of this falling as rain
0:02:16 > 0:02:20rather than snow. An indication, then, of something milder
0:02:20 > 0:02:23coming next week. Now, back to that question I posed,
0:02:23 > 0:02:26that conundrum I posed at the start of the broadcast.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28This week - cold air, low pressure close to Iceland.
0:02:28 > 0:02:32Next week, though, something milder coming our way for a time
0:02:32 > 0:02:34but we still have low pressure close to Iceland.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37So how is that? You can keep low pressure here but
0:02:37 > 0:02:40change the feel of the weather across the UK.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43Well, this week, although we've had low pressure here,
0:02:43 > 0:02:46the west north-westerly winds around it with the cold air
0:02:46 > 0:02:49have run unhindered right the way across the UK
0:02:49 > 0:02:52into continental Europe. But spot the difference for next week,
0:02:52 > 0:02:55we've got high pressure here, so although we've got low pressure
0:02:55 > 0:02:58to the north-west of us and cold air emanating from it,
0:02:58 > 0:03:00it runs into a block with that high pressure.
0:03:00 > 0:03:04Instead of a north-westerly wind, the wind backs to a milder
0:03:04 > 0:03:06south-westerly coming into the UK and that's how you can keep
0:03:06 > 0:03:10low pressure near Iceland but give us different weather.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12And what sort of weather is that next week?
0:03:12 > 0:03:15Well, it's still driven by low pressure, it'll still be
0:03:15 > 0:03:17wet at times, a lot of it, though, in the form of rain
0:03:17 > 0:03:20rather than snow but still on northern hills of the UK
0:03:20 > 0:03:23there could be some further snow at times next week.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26But overall, the bigger difference, as we've seen,
0:03:26 > 0:03:28is that change to less cold, closer to average,
0:03:28 > 0:03:30milder weather next week.
