0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. Weather is what the atmosphere throws at us

0:00:04 > 0:00:06minute by minute, day by day. Climate is the average

0:00:06 > 0:00:09of that over a long period of time. Interestingly,

0:00:09 > 0:00:12both were making news headlines on Thursday.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16Climate first. Several major weather organisations said that...

0:00:21 > 0:00:24Now, El Nino is a natural warming influence on the world's

0:00:24 > 0:00:26weather but it wasn't there in 2017, so even without it,

0:00:26 > 0:00:29the year comfortably took its place in the top-three

0:00:29 > 0:00:31hottest years on record around the world

0:00:31 > 0:00:34and that's why climate was making news.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37But of course, weather was making news as well on Thursday.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40That stormy start to the day, more snow showers around too

0:00:40 > 0:00:43but then look at this - this is something else that would

0:00:43 > 0:00:46get us talking into next week, a change to milder weather

0:00:46 > 0:00:50and for a time next week, I think, much milder weather for some of us,

0:00:50 > 0:00:52with temperatures actually rising above average.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54The reason for that change coming up.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57But right now, we're very much still in that cold air

0:00:57 > 0:00:59coming on this brisk north north-westerly flow

0:00:59 > 0:01:03across the UK. More snow showers, in fact, more significant

0:01:03 > 0:01:06snow piling up into the hills of Northern Ireland and Scotland,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08but further accumulations to lower levels in places,

0:01:08 > 0:01:10into the Pennines, too, at times during Friday.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13A few wintry showers dotted about through other parts

0:01:13 > 0:01:16of Wales and western England and, of course, it feels cold,

0:01:16 > 0:01:18particularly in the wind and especially across the

0:01:18 > 0:01:22northern half of the UK. But even where you stay largely fine across

0:01:22 > 0:01:25some southern and eastern spots, it's still a chilly wind.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Those wintry showers continue on Friday night.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Then we look to the south and we see an area of wet weather affecting

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Wales and southern England that could have a bit of sleet

0:01:33 > 0:01:36or wet snow associated with it clearing away on Saturday

0:01:36 > 0:01:39and actually, Saturday afternoon is much quieter.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Far fewer wintry showers affecting northern parts,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44more of us dry, sunny, but still cold.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Icy start to the day and again possibly on Sunday.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50But then this comes in on Sunday, the first onslaught,

0:01:50 > 0:01:52if you like, of the attack of milder air.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55It comes with wet weather spreading north-east into cold air.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57So, some sleet and snow on the leading edge,

0:01:57 > 0:02:01which could be quite heavy in places, so absolutely keep checking

0:02:01 > 0:02:04the forecast if you've got travel plans on Sunday.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07That pushes away, the milder air starts to take over

0:02:07 > 0:02:10the UK. Another weather system, some uncertainly about the position,

0:02:10 > 0:02:13looks like it will run through parts of England and Wales

0:02:13 > 0:02:16as we go on through Monday. North of that it should stay fine,

0:02:16 > 0:02:20notice temperatures continue to creep up at average, at least,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23for the time of year. And milder still by Tuesday,

0:02:23 > 0:02:25with a lot of fine weather around on Tuesday,

0:02:25 > 0:02:28maybe just a weather system glancing the north-west parts

0:02:28 > 0:02:31of Northern Ireland and Scotland, more of us in double figures.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34And so again, that's the bigger change next week,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37to something much milder and above average for some of us

0:02:37 > 0:02:40for the time of year. And it's all down to a change

0:02:40 > 0:02:42in the position of the jet stream. Right now,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45much of the UK is on the cold side of the jet stream on this

0:02:45 > 0:02:48north-westerly flow. But gradually going into next week,

0:02:48 > 0:02:52the jet stream has a different plan. Ushering that milder air

0:02:52 > 0:02:55from the south-west, it begins to pull its way northwards,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58leaving much of the UK on the warmer, the milder side

0:02:58 > 0:03:01of the jet stream. And that's the most significant change

0:03:01 > 0:03:02in our weather next week.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05It will still be unsettled but that change in the position

0:03:05 > 0:03:07of the jet stream actually pushes most of the weather systems

0:03:07 > 0:03:10towards north-western parts, parts of Northern Ireland

0:03:10 > 0:03:12and Scotland in particular, predominantly in the form of rain.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Relatively dry towards the south-east of the UK after

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Monday's rain and actually climatologically that's

0:03:18 > 0:03:20closer to what we might expect for the UK

0:03:20 > 0:03:22at this time of year. So maybe for a time next week,

0:03:22 > 0:03:25weather and climate converge. Now the change to the milder

0:03:25 > 0:03:28weather will have us talking, not sure it will make

0:03:28 > 0:03:30too many news headlines, though.
