0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. I'm going to give you a fair amount of detail how we see

0:00:04 > 0:00:06the rest of the month panning out across the British Isles

0:00:06 > 0:00:09and then we'll just take a quick look on some of the themes

0:00:09 > 0:00:11we think are going to develop in the first part of February.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14The coming week - bit of a mishmash, not unusual for January.

0:00:14 > 0:00:18A milder start, but as we close out the week, I think

0:00:18 > 0:00:21things briefly will turn cooler.

0:00:21 > 0:00:22Maybe not as cold as we've had it,

0:00:22 > 0:00:25but certainly cooler than the start of the week.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27The reason why it's going to be so mild to start off

0:00:27 > 0:00:30is that we've got this run of south-westerlies.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Quite a bit of breeze, notice the number of isobars, notice that we

0:00:33 > 0:00:36also have two fronts lurking with intent across the British Isles.

0:00:36 > 0:00:37The early one there,

0:00:37 > 0:00:41the more easterly feature, bringing a wet start across eastern parts

0:00:41 > 0:00:43and then we're going to drag this weaker feature down

0:00:43 > 0:00:46and across England and Wales later in the day.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48Behind that, there's a pretty decent chance

0:00:48 > 0:00:50of seeing some decent spells of sunshine

0:00:50 > 0:00:52and I think they'll be at their best

0:00:52 > 0:00:54perhaps across Angus and Aberdeenshire.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Out towards the north and west, plenty of showers,

0:00:56 > 0:00:59similar sort of mixture across Northern Ireland.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Here, across England, having had some sunny spells,

0:01:02 > 0:01:03they may well fade away

0:01:03 > 0:01:06as that more westerly feature just

0:01:06 > 0:01:08drags its way down across northern parts of England,

0:01:08 > 0:01:12through Wales, and some showers, if not longer spells of rain there.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15But as we move on into Wednesday, quite an interesting day here

0:01:15 > 0:01:18because not only have we got a very vigorous area of low pressure

0:01:18 > 0:01:20close to the northern half of Scotland -

0:01:20 > 0:01:2270mph gusts perhaps in there for a time -

0:01:22 > 0:01:24but this weather feature here,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26a band of cloud and rain

0:01:26 > 0:01:28and some pretty strong winds, will work its way slowly

0:01:28 > 0:01:31but surely down across all parts, there is no escape from that.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34The last of the mild air in association with that,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36following on behind despite the presence of the sunshine,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39it's a mixture of sunny spells and showers.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Notice as we go from Wednesday into Thursday,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45we still have quite tightly packed isobars so the wind again a feature.

0:01:45 > 0:01:46Much of it, though, across the British Isles

0:01:46 > 0:01:48still coming from the south-west.

0:01:48 > 0:01:49That's really quite important.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53That's going to keep a relatively mild feel to proceedings.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56But the temperatures will have slipped back by a degree or two

0:01:56 > 0:01:57at the very least

0:01:57 > 0:02:00and then just notice across this north-western quarter,

0:02:00 > 0:02:01no longer the south-westerlies,

0:02:01 > 0:02:04the wind wanting to get round towards a north-westerly.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07At this time of year, that's a really quite cool direction

0:02:07 > 0:02:10exacerbated by the fact those isobars are quite tightly

0:02:10 > 0:02:14packed again. So there will be an edge to the breeze, shall we say?

0:02:14 > 0:02:16If not a full-on wind,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19nay a gale here across this north-eastern quarter of Scotland.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Look at the temperature profile -

0:02:21 > 0:02:235 to 9, where on Tuesday,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26we were talking about sort of 10 to 13 or 14 degrees perhaps.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29That short, sharp shock is just that

0:02:29 > 0:02:31because as we start the weekend,

0:02:31 > 0:02:35the isobars are lying somewhere out to the west and the south-west,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38but again it brings the possibility of frontal systems,

0:02:38 > 0:02:39increasing the cloud.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Bits and pieces of rain moving in across Western Scotland,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45the north-west of England, maybe the top end of Wales

0:02:45 > 0:02:47and back into Northern Ireland too.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50Saturday definitely drier down towards the south-eastern

0:02:50 > 0:02:54quarter, but at least that whole frontal system has imported

0:02:54 > 0:02:57milder airs for the greater part of the British Isles.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Into the following week,

0:03:00 > 0:03:04it could well be that we see a high pressure moving in under this

0:03:04 > 0:03:07great big eddy in the jet stream

0:03:07 > 0:03:09and that could really settle things down across the southern

0:03:09 > 0:03:13half of the British Isles, but less so as it runs

0:03:13 > 0:03:15out of influence across the very far north of Scotland.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18So the driest of the weather in the south.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20There will be a risk of some fog and frost.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Wet and windy in the north, we suspect,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26but I think it could well be that it will be a little bit milder there.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28Lots going on. Take care. Bye-bye.
