0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello, there. We've had some very mild air across the British Isles

0:00:05 > 0:00:06over the last couple of days -

0:00:06 > 0:00:08in fact, you might go so far as to say

0:00:08 > 0:00:11the weekend felt quite springlike in places,

0:00:11 > 0:00:13particularly where you got to see

0:00:13 > 0:00:14some Sunday sunshine.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16That lifted temperatures

0:00:16 > 0:00:18across parts of central and eastern England

0:00:18 > 0:00:20very close to 15 degrees -

0:00:20 > 0:00:22but that trend is not going to continue

0:00:22 > 0:00:24into the week ahead.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26The mild air that has been wafting up

0:00:26 > 0:00:27across the country

0:00:27 > 0:00:28is going to be replaced

0:00:28 > 0:00:30by cold air from the north-west,

0:00:30 > 0:00:32behind this cold front

0:00:32 > 0:00:34sinking southwards and eastwards

0:00:34 > 0:00:36as we start the new working week,

0:00:36 > 0:00:38ahead of the frontal system, still mild

0:00:38 > 0:00:40and pretty windy, as well,

0:00:40 > 0:00:41so, a mild start

0:00:41 > 0:00:43across the south of the country,

0:00:43 > 0:00:45but then we see this band of heavy rain

0:00:45 > 0:00:47sinking southwards and eastwards,

0:00:47 > 0:00:49and behind that, we peel back the cloud -

0:00:49 > 0:00:51yes, we brighten the skies,

0:00:51 > 0:00:53but we drop the temperatures, as well.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Just 5 degrees in Aberdeen

0:00:55 > 0:00:56through Monday afternoon,

0:00:56 > 0:00:57and some showers

0:00:57 > 0:00:59starting to pack into the north-west -

0:00:59 > 0:01:00some heavy, thundery

0:01:00 > 0:01:02and starting to turn wintry,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04because that's the big theme through the week ahead.

0:01:04 > 0:01:05It'll turn colder,

0:01:05 > 0:01:07cold enough for wintry showers -

0:01:07 > 0:01:10it'll often be windy, with gales at times.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Now, having said that,

0:01:12 > 0:01:13the winds will be fairly light

0:01:13 > 0:01:15as we move into the first part of Tuesday.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17An area of high pressure just trying to exert

0:01:17 > 0:01:18an influence on our weather.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Where you're closest to the high,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23particularly for central and eastern areas of England,

0:01:23 > 0:01:24there could be a touch of frost

0:01:24 > 0:01:25on Tuesday morning.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Here, some good spells of sunshine -

0:01:27 > 0:01:29but then a pincer movement of weather systems,

0:01:29 > 0:01:31one into the south-west, one into the north-west,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33bringing rain, and the winds

0:01:33 > 0:01:35will start to strengthen, as well -

0:01:35 > 0:01:37and here comes another cold front,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39another band of rain,

0:01:39 > 0:01:41and behind it a renewed push

0:01:41 > 0:01:43of cold air from the north-west.

0:01:43 > 0:01:44Now, on Wednesday,

0:01:44 > 0:01:47yes, we'll see some spells of sunshine developing,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49but we'll also see quite a few showers -

0:01:49 > 0:01:52particularly over high ground in the north,

0:01:52 > 0:01:54but, perhaps, to low levels across Scotland,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56the showers will turn wintry,

0:01:56 > 0:01:57because temperatures

0:01:57 > 0:01:59will be only around 4 to 9 degrees,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01and it could feel colder than that

0:02:01 > 0:02:02given the strength of the wind.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05Still windy on Thursday, gales in exposed spots,

0:02:05 > 0:02:06particularly up to the north-east.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08There should be fewer showers by this stage,

0:02:08 > 0:02:12more in the way of dry weather - again, 5 to 8 degrees.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14So, some cold air in place

0:02:14 > 0:02:17as we head towards the end of the week.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19We're likely to see quite a widespread frost

0:02:19 > 0:02:22on Friday morning, and then, into that cold air,

0:02:22 > 0:02:25we're going to bring a frontal system from the west,

0:02:25 > 0:02:26bringing outbreaks of rain, yes,

0:02:26 > 0:02:27but on its leading edge,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Northern Ireland, northern England, Scotland

0:02:30 > 0:02:31could see some snow for a time.

0:02:31 > 0:02:32Generally, though,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34it looks like we'll end the week

0:02:34 > 0:02:35with some slightly milder air

0:02:35 > 0:02:37returning from the south-west.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38Now, into next weekend,

0:02:38 > 0:02:41we're likely to see further bands of rain

0:02:41 > 0:02:42pushing across the country

0:02:42 > 0:02:43accompanied, once again,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45temporarily, by some slightly milder air -

0:02:45 > 0:02:47but the tendency will always be

0:02:47 > 0:02:48to get us back

0:02:48 > 0:02:51into these north or north-westerly winds.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53So, yes, while there might be

0:02:53 > 0:02:55mild periods of weather,

0:02:55 > 0:02:56there will also be

0:02:56 > 0:02:59some pretty cold weather around, as well.

0:02:59 > 0:03:00So, we can sum it up like this

0:03:00 > 0:03:02for the weekend and beyond -

0:03:02 > 0:03:03there will be spells of rain

0:03:03 > 0:03:04interspersed by brighter periods

0:03:04 > 0:03:06and some sunshine. Cold enough,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08where we have those brighter periods,

0:03:08 > 0:03:09to give some wintry showers

0:03:09 > 0:03:11as those temperatures continue

0:03:11 > 0:03:12to wobble upwards and downwards.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14Now, there is just a chance,

0:03:14 > 0:03:15as we look even further ahead,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17that we might see high pressure

0:03:17 > 0:03:18building down from Scandinavia,

0:03:18 > 0:03:20blocking the weather patterns,

0:03:20 > 0:03:21stopping the Atlantic weather system,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24so, turning things less unsettled,

0:03:24 > 0:03:26but bringing us an easterly wind -

0:03:26 > 0:03:27and at this time of year,

0:03:27 > 0:03:30that will still feel like winter.
