0:00:02 > 0:00:04We'll update you on the weather prospects for the whole

0:00:04 > 0:00:07of the British Isles in the next couple of minutes in some detail

0:00:07 > 0:00:09for the forthcoming week. Then as we get on into next week,

0:00:09 > 0:00:11I'm just going to run a couple of scenarios by you.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13There's a bit of uncertainty about what is going to go on.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15In the shorter term,

0:00:15 > 0:00:18the last of the weekend's mild airs were rudely pushed aside

0:00:18 > 0:00:20by a cold front coming down from

0:00:20 > 0:00:22the northern end of the British Isles

0:00:22 > 0:00:24and that's introduced the air mass that will

0:00:24 > 0:00:27predominate across most parts for the greater part of this week.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29A little ridge of high pressure gives a bright

0:00:29 > 0:00:32but frosty start for the greater part of England

0:00:32 > 0:00:33and Wales,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35but it runs out of influence as you move up

0:00:35 > 0:00:37towards the north and west of Scotland where it will be wet

0:00:37 > 0:00:40and windy right from the word go.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Elsewhere, the sunshine rather losing out to a veil of cloud

0:00:43 > 0:00:46ahead of another set of weather fronts moving in towards

0:00:46 > 0:00:47the south-west of both Wales

0:00:47 > 0:00:49and England to finish off the day.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52Light and patchy rain here but that rain in the north,

0:00:52 > 0:00:54there's something about it

0:00:54 > 0:00:56and it could well be before it stops raining, we could see

0:00:56 > 0:01:0050 to 60 millimetres of rain with some snow across the highest ground.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Here, as we move from Tuesday into Wednesday,

0:01:02 > 0:01:04that weather front moves its way slowly

0:01:04 > 0:01:07but surely down into the greater part

0:01:07 > 0:01:08of England and Wales.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10Behind it, the air already showing signs

0:01:10 > 0:01:12of wanting to turn much colder,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14temperatures at a low of 1, 2 or 3

0:01:14 > 0:01:16in the major towns and cities.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18So here is the scenario for the start of Wednesday.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Not one but two weather fronts across the south.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22You can imagine the amount of cloud there.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Notice the number of isobars too.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27So even though it is brighter behind those weather fronts,

0:01:27 > 0:01:31it will be no warmer because the wind is starting to come in

0:01:31 > 0:01:32from the north-west,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34not a particularly warm direction.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37There will be wintriness about the showers across the high ground

0:01:37 > 0:01:39and in the south, eventually you get to see some sunshine.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Wednesday into Thursday,

0:01:41 > 0:01:42we're still cranking those isobars

0:01:42 > 0:01:44even further around towards

0:01:44 > 0:01:45a north and north-westerly

0:01:45 > 0:01:47and there are still a lot of them.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49So Thursday, fewer showers perhaps

0:01:49 > 0:01:51away from these exposed

0:01:51 > 0:01:53northern and eastern shores.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56The best of the sunshine away from the North Sea counties,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58but look at the temperatures -

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Again, 5, 6, 7, 8 degrees.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02Add in the strength of the wind, not a warm day

0:02:02 > 0:02:04despite the presence of the sunshine.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07And we do it pretty much all again on Friday.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10The last of the showers just hanging onto those

0:02:10 > 0:02:11eastern shores of England.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Then some sunshine,

0:02:13 > 0:02:14then we start to lose the sunshine

0:02:14 > 0:02:16away towards the north and west

0:02:16 > 0:02:18and why is that?

0:02:18 > 0:02:20We've got a set of weather fronts moving in from the Atlantic

0:02:20 > 0:02:22so this makes for a pretty wet

0:02:22 > 0:02:24start to the weekend.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Quite an active weather front there

0:02:26 > 0:02:29draped right across the heart of the British Isles

0:02:29 > 0:02:31and there may well be a bit of a conversion across

0:02:31 > 0:02:33the highest ground of some of that rain to snow.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Following on behind, it's a mixture of sunny spells,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38but quite a lot of cloud and some showers.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Now, further ahead than that,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43we have got two high pressures to consider.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45If you've been with us over the past day or two,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47we may have well have spoken about how dominant

0:02:47 > 0:02:50the high pressure over Scandinavia was going to become.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52We'll call that, if you like, scenario one.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54If that was going to be the case,

0:02:54 > 0:02:58it is suggested that we might end up with a really cold easterly

0:02:58 > 0:03:02coming in from the continent, from, in fact, up around Siberia.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Not a warm direction at any time of year, especially in January

0:03:06 > 0:03:07and February.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Scenario two may well

0:03:09 > 0:03:10be the one that wins out,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13where we bring a high pressure in from the Azores.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Still pushing a north-westerly down across the British Isles

0:03:16 > 0:03:20but relatively speaking, a slightly milder direction.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Still some uncertainty about all of that.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Whichever one wins out, it's going to be pretty dry,

0:03:24 > 0:03:27it certainly will be colder than of late, but how cold?

0:03:27 > 0:03:29That is the question.
