0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. We are into one of the longest cold spells

0:00:04 > 0:00:06of the winter so far and it looks like we're going

0:00:06 > 0:00:09to get another week out of it before it's done.

0:00:09 > 0:00:10May not even be done then.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12And some of us are going to see more snow.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Now, we've had a bit of that so far this weekend,

0:00:15 > 0:00:18particularly in higher parts of northern England and Scotland,

0:00:18 > 0:00:22but there's the threat elsewhere as we go through the week ahead.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24Now, what's happening for part two of the weekend

0:00:24 > 0:00:28on Sunday is, as this weather system just fizzles out in situ,

0:00:28 > 0:00:32a keen and cold north-easterly wind behind it blows through

0:00:32 > 0:00:35east and south-east England, with someone wintry showers.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38A lot of these falling as rain or sleet or hail.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41Things may change on Sunday night, as we'll see in a moment.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Elsewhere, variable cloud, some sunny spells

0:00:43 > 0:00:48on a drier, brighter day compared to what we endured during Saturday.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50But it's still cold out there. There is some sunshine.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53We have a light breeze. It may not feel too bad,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56but that keen, cold north-easterly wind across East Anglia

0:00:56 > 0:00:59and the south-east of England will make it feel closer to

0:00:59 > 0:01:02freezing and then we have these showers turning increasingly

0:01:02 > 0:01:05to sleet and snow across parts of south-east England

0:01:05 > 0:01:07through Sunday night and into Monday morning,

0:01:07 > 0:01:09increasing the ice threat as well.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13So we need to watch out for possible disruption there.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Elsewhere, another fine winter's day with variable cloud and sunshine.

0:01:16 > 0:01:17Yes, it's still cold

0:01:17 > 0:01:20and still particularly in that wind towards the south-east.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23But then, as we go through Monday into Tuesday, we are

0:01:23 > 0:01:25looking to the other end of the UK.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28This weather system, coming in from the Atlantic.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33This pushing into cold air will bring further sleet and snow,

0:01:33 > 0:01:36probably all sleet and snow inland away from coastal areas,

0:01:36 > 0:01:39as it edges its way slowly southwards during Tuesday,

0:01:39 > 0:01:42but it will be weakening as it does so, so we're not expecting

0:01:42 > 0:01:45huge amounts of snow, but it doesn't take much to cause some disruption.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48So keep a close eye on the forecast for Tuesday.

0:01:48 > 0:01:49Tuesday night into Wednesday,

0:01:49 > 0:01:53again, very weakly it pushes its way southwards

0:01:53 > 0:01:55and we get a few showers following on behind,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58towards the west and north of the UK but also some dry

0:01:58 > 0:02:01and occasionally sunny weather on Wednesday as well,

0:02:01 > 0:02:02with the winds easing once again

0:02:02 > 0:02:06and those temperatures still very much stuck into single figures

0:02:06 > 0:02:09and we look at another weather system towards the north-west.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12So, the story from Wednesday into Thursday is another attack

0:02:12 > 0:02:14from the Atlantic with cold air,

0:02:14 > 0:02:16with moisture coming in with this weather front.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Now, this may have a little less cold air associated with it.

0:02:20 > 0:02:21There's still some sleet and snow,

0:02:21 > 0:02:25particularly for higher ground and perhaps this leading edge.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29I think more of us will see rain rather than snow out of this system

0:02:29 > 0:02:30as it gradually pushes its way southwards

0:02:30 > 0:02:34and weakens once again as we go on through Thursday.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37Now, by the end of next week, we still have the cold air

0:02:37 > 0:02:41in place but this area of mild air is yet another weather system

0:02:41 > 0:02:42coming in from the Atlantic

0:02:42 > 0:02:46and again trying to turn our weather milder, wetter and windier.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49As we take a look at that in the big picture,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52yes, it's another area of low pressure with a frontal system

0:02:52 > 0:02:56coming our way, with strengthening wind and some wet weather.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00The question is, as this arrives in time for next weekend,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02what are we going to get out of it?

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Well, it's likely, we think at the moment, as that moves in it

0:03:05 > 0:03:10will turn a little less cold for a time next weekend, but only briefly.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11But as it comes in, there will be some rain

0:03:11 > 0:03:14and, whilst many of us see rain, there's still the threat of getting

0:03:14 > 0:03:17some snow out of it, particularly for higher ground.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Again, something to watch

0:03:19 > 0:03:23and it may be windy enough to bring strong winds or even gales.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26And, as that system pulls away,

0:03:26 > 0:03:28it looks likely it will turn cold yet again.
