0:00:02 > 0:00:04Well, there's a lot of talk about cold weather at the moment -

0:00:04 > 0:00:06let's see how long it's going to last.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08In the short-term, first, let's talk about the snow,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10because that's what we're focusing on,

0:00:10 > 0:00:12and there could be some disruptive snow

0:00:12 > 0:00:15across northern and western parts of the country

0:00:15 > 0:00:17first thing on Tuesday morning.

0:00:17 > 0:00:18As we go through the night,

0:00:18 > 0:00:20the snow will pass Northern Ireland,

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Scotland, eventually nudge into northern England

0:00:22 > 0:00:24during the early hours

0:00:24 > 0:00:26and reach north-western parts of England

0:00:26 > 0:00:27towards the end of the night,

0:00:27 > 0:00:28eventually Wales, too,

0:00:28 > 0:00:30and the snow will be settling -

0:00:30 > 0:00:32it's certainly cold enough for it to settle.

0:00:32 > 0:00:341 to 3cm in some areas,

0:00:34 > 0:00:37possibly even 10cm, 5 to 10,

0:00:37 > 0:00:39across the hills, the Pennines.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41To the south and east, however,

0:00:41 > 0:00:42no snow during the night.

0:00:42 > 0:00:43So, this is a look at the weather

0:00:43 > 0:00:45around eight o'clock in the morning on Tuesday.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47The weather front will have gone

0:00:47 > 0:00:48through Scotland at this stage.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Behind it, cold winds and wintry showers.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52You can see the splodges of white,

0:00:52 > 0:00:54those are the wintry showers that come and go.

0:00:54 > 0:00:55Here's our weather front,

0:00:55 > 0:00:57with the snow falling from the north-east

0:00:57 > 0:00:58of England, from Newcastle, there,

0:00:58 > 0:01:00through parts of Yorkshire,

0:01:00 > 0:01:01the north-west of England,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03so, yes, some snow for Manchester, Wrexham,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05just about nudging into Birmingham, there,

0:01:05 > 0:01:06through Wales,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08but maybe down in the extreme south-west,

0:01:08 > 0:01:09in Cornwall, probably snow.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11This snow is not going to last very long.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14It will be settling again during the morning

0:01:14 > 0:01:15in a number of areas.

0:01:15 > 0:01:16Some will miss the snow -

0:01:16 > 0:01:18not everybody in the North will get the snow,

0:01:18 > 0:01:19but, eventually,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21you can see that weather front falls apart,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23so, by the time we get to these areas here,

0:01:23 > 0:01:24it's mostly cloudy.

0:01:24 > 0:01:25Having said that,

0:01:25 > 0:01:26later in the day on Tuesday,

0:01:26 > 0:01:28so, Tuesday evening,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30the snow could pep up just a little bit

0:01:30 > 0:01:31around Lincolnshire,

0:01:31 > 0:01:33possibly parts of East Anglia, as well.

0:01:33 > 0:01:34Elsewhere, Wednesday,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36early on Wednesday, some snow flurries -

0:01:36 > 0:01:37but the temperature

0:01:37 > 0:01:39really will be the story

0:01:39 > 0:01:40first thing on Wednesday morning.

0:01:40 > 0:01:41Look at that, 5am,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44negative double digits in Scotland

0:01:44 > 0:01:45and even in rural areas

0:01:45 > 0:01:47in the extreme south of the country

0:01:47 > 0:01:49it could be as low as -5 or -6 degrees.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52So, a very frosty start to Wednesday.

0:01:52 > 0:01:53Cold and bright.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55There is another weather front heading our way,

0:01:55 > 0:01:56but ahead of it, initially,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58you can see the blue lit land, there,

0:01:58 > 0:01:59that's the frost.

0:01:59 > 0:02:00The temperatures will struggle,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02they'll probably be no higher

0:02:02 > 0:02:03than a couple of degrees during the daytime -

0:02:03 > 0:02:05but look what happens across western areas.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07This is another weather front coming in,

0:02:07 > 0:02:08cloud and some rain,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10possibly turning into a bit of snow, there,

0:02:10 > 0:02:12across northern areas, at least temporarily,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14and this is basically almost like a wedge

0:02:14 > 0:02:15of slightly milder air.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17That's what weather fronts often do,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19they bring a pulse of milder air

0:02:19 > 0:02:20from the southern climes,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22and then, behind the weather front,

0:02:22 > 0:02:25you get that dig in the jet stream,

0:02:25 > 0:02:26and the winds tuck in,

0:02:26 > 0:02:27bringing that colder air.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29So, this is what it looks like on Thursday.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31If you imagine that wedge of milder air

0:02:31 > 0:02:32across the UK,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34temperatures back up to 10 in the extreme,

0:02:34 > 0:02:35and then, in the north,

0:02:35 > 0:02:36you get that dig, that colder air,

0:02:36 > 0:02:38coming back in again across Scotland,

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Northern Ireland and the north of England,

0:02:40 > 0:02:42so, it does look as though,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44after a slightly milder Thursday,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46by the time we get to Friday,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49things are going to cool off once again.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51So, let's have a look at the forecast for Friday.

0:02:51 > 0:02:52The possibility of wintry showers,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55initially across some more northern areas,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57some sunshine around, as well,

0:02:57 > 0:02:59but this could potentially, at some point, at least,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01that weather front, bring a bit of snow

0:03:01 > 0:03:02in the south-east -

0:03:02 > 0:03:03and then, next weekend,

0:03:03 > 0:03:04the thinking is,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06low pressures will be rattling through,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08but we are always going to be

0:03:08 > 0:03:09in relatively cold air,

0:03:09 > 0:03:10which is originating

0:03:10 > 0:03:11from these northern climes.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13You can see the snow showers, there,

0:03:13 > 0:03:14even across the North Atlantic.

0:03:14 > 0:03:15There could be another low

0:03:15 > 0:03:17coming our way,

0:03:17 > 0:03:18which could bring some snow

0:03:18 > 0:03:19during the weekend

0:03:19 > 0:03:20and into next week, as well.

0:03:20 > 0:03:21So, here's the summary.

0:03:21 > 0:03:22It's going to be cold,

0:03:22 > 0:03:23widespread frosts,

0:03:23 > 0:03:24briefly milder

0:03:24 > 0:03:25towards the end of the week,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27particularly Thursday,

0:03:27 > 0:03:28and then colder again Friday. Bye-bye.
