0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello, there. The wintry story continues -
0:00:04 > 0:00:05and not just here in the UK,
0:00:05 > 0:00:07also across much of Europe and north-west Africa.
0:00:07 > 0:00:08In fact, these scenes from Tuesday
0:00:08 > 0:00:10weren't from the tops of the Pennines,
0:00:10 > 0:00:11but were instead from Morocco,
0:00:11 > 0:00:12where we saw extensive
0:00:12 > 0:00:14and, in places, quite heavy snowfall.
0:00:14 > 0:00:15If I show you the air mass
0:00:15 > 0:00:17across Europe and north-west Africa,
0:00:17 > 0:00:19you can see the extent of cold air at the moment -
0:00:19 > 0:00:20the blue colour's all the way
0:00:20 > 0:00:21as far south as the Canaries.
0:00:21 > 0:00:22Warmest are the areas
0:00:22 > 0:00:24down towards the east of the Mediterranean -
0:00:24 > 0:00:26and the reason we've got this extent of cold air
0:00:26 > 0:00:28is because, if I show you the jet stream, now,
0:00:28 > 0:00:30we see the jet stream double back on itself,
0:00:30 > 0:00:31feeding in easterly winds
0:00:31 > 0:00:33and that cold air to many places.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35Push ourselves out towards the west, though,
0:00:35 > 0:00:38there's a strengthening Atlantic jet stream, now,
0:00:38 > 0:00:39and that is edging our way,
0:00:39 > 0:00:41set to bring changes over the coming days,
0:00:41 > 0:00:43and introducing some Atlantic weather fronts.
0:00:43 > 0:00:44Now, before that arrives on Wednesday,
0:00:44 > 0:00:46we've got this ridge of high pressure,
0:00:46 > 0:00:48which means we'll start dry, with some ice,
0:00:48 > 0:00:50and also, of course, a widespread frost.
0:00:50 > 0:00:51Plenty of sunshine, too,
0:00:51 > 0:00:52Early showers, wintry in nature,
0:00:52 > 0:00:54towards East Anglia and the south-east
0:00:54 > 0:00:55clearing away,
0:00:55 > 0:00:56but notice how the cloud increases
0:00:56 > 0:00:58across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
0:00:58 > 0:01:00We'll see some snow on the Scottish mountains,
0:01:00 > 0:01:01maybe as much as 10cm,
0:01:01 > 0:01:03but it will turn back to rain as temperatures rise.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05Stornoway 8 degrees by the end of the day.
0:01:05 > 0:01:07Elsewhere, even with the sunshine, another chilly day,
0:01:07 > 0:01:10and a little bit more breeze around than we saw on Tuesday.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12Frost quickly developing towards the south and east
0:01:12 > 0:01:14under largely clear skies to take us into Wednesday night,
0:01:14 > 0:01:15but this weather front
0:01:15 > 0:01:17will work its way southwards and eastwards
0:01:17 > 0:01:20slowly through Wednesday night and into Thursday,
0:01:20 > 0:01:22with colder air trying to push back in once again
0:01:22 > 0:01:23from the north-west.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25Now, the weather front into the start of Thursday
0:01:25 > 0:01:27will be somewhere across the Borders,
0:01:27 > 0:01:29northern England into north-west Wales,
0:01:29 > 0:01:31outbreaks of, maybe, rain on this, this time.
0:01:31 > 0:01:32Not everywhere -
0:01:32 > 0:01:36it's going to be fairly scattered across this zone,
0:01:36 > 0:01:38with some heavier bursts into the west of Wales later on.
0:01:38 > 0:01:40Bright start, but cold start in the south-east,
0:01:40 > 0:01:41struggling to lift up, here.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44Temperatures in Plymouth 10 degrees by the end of the day,
0:01:44 > 0:01:46Scotland, Northern Ireland stay largely dry
0:01:46 > 0:01:48with some hazy sunshine - but a wetter night
0:01:48 > 0:01:50come Thursday night to Friday,
0:01:50 > 0:01:51as that weather front reinvigorates
0:01:51 > 0:01:53as it passes its way eastwards.
0:01:53 > 0:01:54A ridge of high pressure builds, there,
0:01:54 > 0:01:56but not a particularly strong one.
0:01:56 > 0:01:57Now, there could be some ice around,
0:01:57 > 0:01:58frost here and there for Friday,
0:01:58 > 0:02:00the weather front clearing away
0:02:00 > 0:02:02from the south-east corner. Mainly rain,
0:02:02 > 0:02:04but what follows will be a scattering of showers,
0:02:04 > 0:02:05rain, hail, sleet and snow -
0:02:05 > 0:02:06although mainly snow,
0:02:06 > 0:02:07west of Scotland, Northern Ireland,
0:02:07 > 0:02:09as temperatures again drop back
0:02:09 > 0:02:10to about 4 or 5 degrees -
0:02:10 > 0:02:12and the breeze will make it feel colder than that.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14Brief ridge of high pressure to start Friday night,
0:02:14 > 0:02:15take us into Saturday,
0:02:15 > 0:02:17so, frost and ice risk across England and Wales,
0:02:17 > 0:02:19and then the next Atlantic weather fronts
0:02:19 > 0:02:20start to push away.
0:02:20 > 0:02:22These will have a little bit more about them.
0:02:22 > 0:02:23There'll be some heavy bursts of snow
0:02:23 > 0:02:24on its forward edge,
0:02:24 > 0:02:26particularly across the mountains of Scotland,
0:02:26 > 0:02:28northern England, North Wales -
0:02:28 > 0:02:29but it will turn back to rain
0:02:29 > 0:02:31as mild air briefly tries to push its way in.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33Rain reaching the south-east corner later in the day,
0:02:33 > 0:02:34turning brighter later on
0:02:34 > 0:02:36across Scotland and Northern Ireland
0:02:36 > 0:02:37but here, then, temperatures drop,
0:02:37 > 0:02:39and, whilst we've got the wind coming off the Atlantic,
0:02:39 > 0:02:41they're coming all the way from Canada
0:02:41 > 0:02:42by the end of the weekend,
0:02:42 > 0:02:44and it's a source of pretty cold air at the moment.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47So, we're going to see wintry showers across the board,
0:02:47 > 0:02:49mainly across northern and western areas,
0:02:49 > 0:02:52primarily of snow, giving it further covering in places.
0:02:52 > 0:02:53That's really going to mount up this week
0:02:53 > 0:02:55across the mountains of Scotland.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57Temperatures in single figures, of course,
0:02:57 > 0:02:58but, with added wind-chill,
0:02:58 > 0:03:00it will probably feel close to freezing,
0:03:00 > 0:03:02particularly the further north and west you are -
0:03:02 > 0:03:04and even as we go into the following week,
0:03:04 > 0:03:05half term, of course,
0:03:05 > 0:03:07we've still got that vigorous Atlantic jet stream
0:03:07 > 0:03:09pushing its way in, and where we've got that,
0:03:09 > 0:03:11it means, to the north, we get low pressure,
0:03:11 > 0:03:12to the south we get high pressure,
0:03:12 > 0:03:15and they're both going to have varying goes at us
0:03:15 > 0:03:16through much of half term week.
0:03:16 > 0:03:20The dominant one is more likely to be the low-pressure system,
0:03:20 > 0:03:21so, overall, it will stay cold
0:03:21 > 0:03:24with winds in the west and north-west.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26There will be some milder spells coming in -
0:03:26 > 0:03:28with it, some outbreaks of rain preceded by snow,
0:03:28 > 0:03:30and, next week, always that bit windier.
