0:00:02 > 0:00:04Hello. There's a big change on the way over the next ten days.

0:00:04 > 0:00:07We're going to be moving from something very unsettled

0:00:07 > 0:00:09to something significantly quieter.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Through the rest of this week, the jet stream

0:00:11 > 0:00:14will continue to race across the Atlantic

0:00:14 > 0:00:17bringing areas of low pressure in our direction,

0:00:17 > 0:00:21But something dramatic is happening way above our heads

0:00:21 > 0:00:22up in the stratosphere.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24Normally in winter,

0:00:24 > 0:00:26the winds up in the stratosphere move from west to east

0:00:26 > 0:00:30around the Arctic, but what we're seeing at the moment is

0:00:30 > 0:00:34those winds slowing down and beginning to reverse direction.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37We call this sudden stratospheric warming

0:00:37 > 0:00:40because it normally coincides with a warming of the stratosphere,

0:00:40 > 0:00:42and what that means for our weather

0:00:42 > 0:00:44is the jet stream will slow down.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47So instead of bringing weather systems towards our shores,

0:00:47 > 0:00:50it will actually reverse direction and that blocks the weather

0:00:50 > 0:00:53patterns, bringing us something much quieter.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55But not yet.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Tuesday morning could bring some disruption with snow

0:00:57 > 0:00:59and ice for some, wind and rain for others.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Your BBC local radio station

0:01:01 > 0:01:03a good source of travel information.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05This band of rain in the south,

0:01:05 > 0:01:06snow further north will continue

0:01:06 > 0:01:09to slide its way eastwards through the day. Strong winds ahead of it.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10Behind it,

0:01:10 > 0:01:12something brighter through the afternoon.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Some good spells of sunshine.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Some wintry showers into the north-west

0:01:17 > 0:01:19on what will be a cold-feeling day.

0:01:19 > 0:01:20As we move out of Tuesday,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23that first weather system slides off to the east,

0:01:23 > 0:01:25but remember the active jet stream

0:01:25 > 0:01:26still bringing areas of low pressure our way.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29This one bringing a frontal system on Wednesday.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31It's a bit of a repeat performance.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32Some rain and some snow.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35The snow most likely over high ground in the north,

0:01:35 > 0:01:37but perhaps some for lower levels as well.

0:01:37 > 0:01:38Some strong and gusty winds.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Something brighter following on into the west.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42But at this stage,

0:01:42 > 0:01:45we'll start to bring something milder into western areas.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47So Belfast, Cardiff, Plymouth -

0:01:47 > 0:01:4910 degrees on Wednesday afternoon.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Low pressure still with us as we go on into Thursday.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Still driving some fairly strong winds

0:01:55 > 0:01:57and some wintry showers across northern parts of the UK,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59across Scotland into Northern Ireland

0:01:59 > 0:02:01and parts of northern England.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04But the further south you are, fewer showers,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07more in the way of dry weather and sunshine and still that

0:02:07 > 0:02:09slightly milder feel with

0:02:09 > 0:02:11temperatures up to 10 or 11 degrees.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Friday similar on the face of it,

0:02:13 > 0:02:15but the showers in the north-west likely to become a little

0:02:15 > 0:02:16more organised at times

0:02:16 > 0:02:18so perhaps some more persistent rain

0:02:18 > 0:02:20and snow to come.

0:02:20 > 0:02:21Further south and east,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23again that bit drier and brighter

0:02:23 > 0:02:25and still relatively mild

0:02:25 > 0:02:28at 9 or 10 degrees.

0:02:28 > 0:02:29Then we move into the weekend

0:02:29 > 0:02:33and this really is the first sign of that quieter weather.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35This area of high pressure beginning to

0:02:35 > 0:02:37build its way in from the south-west.

0:02:37 > 0:02:38That will have more of an influence

0:02:38 > 0:02:40on our weather on Saturday,

0:02:40 > 0:02:41so more of us will be dry and fine

0:02:41 > 0:02:42with some sunshine

0:02:42 > 0:02:45after what could be a cold and frosty start.

0:02:45 > 0:02:46Still some showers in the north.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Could be cold enough for those to be wintry over high ground,

0:02:49 > 0:02:50but generally by this stage,

0:02:50 > 0:02:54the temperatures that bit higher at 8 to 10 degrees.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56So it is all about high pressure

0:02:56 > 0:02:57quietening things down as

0:02:57 > 0:03:00we move through the second half of the weekend and into next week.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04But exactly where that high ends up will determine just how mild,

0:03:04 > 0:03:07or indeed how cold, it will feel.

0:03:07 > 0:03:08At the moment,

0:03:08 > 0:03:11most computer models favour keeping the high pressure just to the south.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14That will allow us to bring some mild air in from the west.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17But there is a chance that that high pressure could drift further

0:03:17 > 0:03:20north across the country and that would allow us

0:03:20 > 0:03:23to bring some colder air from the east.

0:03:23 > 0:03:28But mild or cold, either way it is going to turn quieter next week.
