0:00:02 > 0:00:05It's here. One of the coldest, snowiest weeks in the UK

0:00:05 > 0:00:06in years, we think,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09and the weather really making us sit up and take notice.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12The meteorology behind it as well, really unusual.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15This is the jet stream, how we're starting this week.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18We are used to it powering from west to east across the Atlantic

0:00:18 > 0:00:21but, look, it is attacking us from the north-east to

0:00:21 > 0:00:23the south-west, a cold direction

0:00:23 > 0:00:25and something really unusual.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27We don't get to see this very often at all.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29Of course, it's the reason why it is so cold.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30Of course, it is the reason

0:00:30 > 0:00:32some of us are being hit by frequent

0:00:32 > 0:00:33snow showers, particularly in

0:00:33 > 0:00:35that north-easterly flow.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36Going into Tuesday morning -

0:00:36 > 0:00:38two amber warnings from the Met Office.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41Be prepared parts of north-east England, Yorkshire,

0:00:41 > 0:00:43the Midlands into East Anglia and south-east England,

0:00:43 > 0:00:44up to 10 centimetres of snow.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46The likelihood of some disruption.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Of course, you need to check the situation heading out

0:00:49 > 0:00:51at any stage during Tuesday.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Though the showers towards south-east England fading

0:00:53 > 0:00:56a bit into the afternoon.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58We'll see a spell of snow working through part of the Pennines,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01the Midlands, Wales, giving a few centimetres in some spots.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03Northern Ireland, Western Scotland could well avoid the snow

0:01:03 > 0:01:05showers for now and see sunny spells.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Of course, it is bitterly cold,

0:01:07 > 0:01:08it feels colder in the wind.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Now on through Tuesday night and into Wednesday,

0:01:11 > 0:01:12again the harder whites here

0:01:12 > 0:01:14are the snow showers coming in

0:01:14 > 0:01:17and notice how the core of the heavier ones starting to

0:01:17 > 0:01:19shunt a little bit further north.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21It is bitterly cold overnight,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23again it feels colder in the wind.

0:01:23 > 0:01:24There is a hard frost.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28So Wednesday's big picture, instead of the showers powering at us

0:01:28 > 0:01:31from the north-east, there's just a little tilt of the flow here

0:01:31 > 0:01:34so they're starting, these heavier snow showers, to attack

0:01:34 > 0:01:35parts of north-east England

0:01:35 > 0:01:37and eastern and northern Scotland.

0:01:37 > 0:01:38So this is where we have a

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Met Office amber warning in force.

0:01:40 > 0:01:41Be prepared Wednesday into Thursday.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44Again, you could see 10 centimetres or perhaps more

0:01:44 > 0:01:47in some spots and the likelihood of some disruption.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49As I show you the picture for Wednesday,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51again you can see these heavier

0:01:51 > 0:01:53snow showers coming in on this

0:01:53 > 0:01:55flow here which is

0:01:55 > 0:01:56less north-easterly, more easterly.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Snow showers possible elsewhere.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00We are watching an area that could

0:02:00 > 0:02:01run in to parts of south-west

0:02:01 > 0:02:03England dumping some heavy snow.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05There will be some snow showers running into parts

0:02:05 > 0:02:08of Northern Ireland too. There will be some sunny spells around.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10These are your maximum temperatures.

0:02:10 > 0:02:11When you factor in the wind,

0:02:11 > 0:02:12of course, it is colder.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Colder still of the wind gets stronger

0:02:14 > 0:02:16later in the week as we see an area of low pressure.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19It's been named by the Portuguese weather service as Storm Emma

0:02:19 > 0:02:21so you may hear that talked about,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23but it is going to run moisture

0:02:23 > 0:02:26northwards into the UK, into the very cold air we have across us.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28And, of course, that is a recipe for snow.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30It may not look exactly like this as

0:02:30 > 0:02:31we go from Thursday into Friday

0:02:31 > 0:02:33but I want to show you this to give you an idea.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35You could well see some heavy snow

0:02:35 > 0:02:37running in towards the south-west initially

0:02:37 > 0:02:39with blizzards in strong winds.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Could be seriously disruptive.

0:02:41 > 0:02:42Then on through Friday,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45it all starts to move further north

0:02:45 > 0:02:46across the rest of the UK.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49So some particularly nasty,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52disruptive snow towards the end of the week.

0:02:52 > 0:02:53That is a possibility.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55Keep in touch with the forecast.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Going through the weekend into next week, look at the jet stream,

0:02:58 > 0:03:02it is now flowing west to east but it is well to the south of us.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05We are still in the blues but we're not as cold as we've been because

0:03:05 > 0:03:08we've lost the powerful jet stream coming in from the north-east.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11What does that mean for our weather going into next week?

0:03:11 > 0:03:14It will be less cold, initially across southern parts of the UK.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17How quickly the less cold air goes north, that is open to question.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19Unsettled with areas of low pressure,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22still a risk of snow, particularly where the cold air

0:03:22 > 0:03:25hangs on for longest across the northern half of the UK.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Of course we will keep you updated.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Right now though we are the grip of some very serious winter weather.
