0:00:03 > 0:00:05Hello. We talk a lot on Weather for the Week Ahead about the jet stream
0:00:05 > 0:00:09because it is crucial in driving weather systems around the world.
0:00:09 > 0:00:13The winds high up in the atmosphere steering areas of low pressure
0:00:13 > 0:00:16but also dividing warm air from cold.
0:00:16 > 0:00:20Recently the jet stream has been to the south of the UK,
0:00:20 > 0:00:21keeping us in the cold air.
0:00:21 > 0:00:23But watch what happens as we head towards the weekend,
0:00:23 > 0:00:27the jet stream will slide northwards and that will allow us
0:00:27 > 0:00:29to bring in some milder air from the south.
0:00:29 > 0:00:32In fact, through the weekend, some pretty high temperatures.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34Some spots may be 15 or 16.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38But with that in close proximity to the jet stream there will be
0:00:38 > 0:00:42areas of low pressure so we'll see some outbreaks of rain.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45And there's some rain to come in places during Friday,
0:00:45 > 0:00:48spreading across the Channel Islands into southern parts of England,
0:00:48 > 0:00:50perhaps south Wales through the afternoon.
0:00:50 > 0:00:52To the north of that after a cold,
0:00:52 > 0:00:55frosty start with some mist patches it will turn into a mainly
0:00:55 > 0:00:57dry day with spells of sunshine,
0:00:57 > 0:01:01some showers into the north-west of Scotland and temperatures of 8-11.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04This area of low pressure developed by the jet stream will be
0:01:04 > 0:01:09spinning around to the south-west of Britain on Saturday.
0:01:09 > 0:01:12Frontal systems pushing forwards but follow the isobars,
0:01:12 > 0:01:15a southerly flow so that's where the mild air will be coming from.
0:01:15 > 0:01:18During Saturday we'll push this area of rain out of northern England
0:01:18 > 0:01:21and Northern Ireland into Scotland where it could well give some
0:01:21 > 0:01:22snow over the hills.
0:01:22 > 0:01:25At low levels it will mostly be rain
0:01:25 > 0:01:27because all the while we will be bringing this milder air
0:01:27 > 0:01:30up from the south and I think Saturday is the day,
0:01:30 > 0:01:33given a bit of brightness in the south-east
0:01:33 > 0:01:36corner we could get to 15 or 16.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39Sunday is likely to start off with some mist and fog patches.
0:01:39 > 0:01:40A lot of low cloud as well.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43Things should brighten up for many with some spells of sunshine.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46Showers likely to be spreading across the southern
0:01:46 > 0:01:47half of the country.
0:01:47 > 0:01:50Some of these heavy. Still pretty mild, even in Edinburgh up to 10.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53A high of 14 in London.
0:01:53 > 0:01:56Low pressure remains the dominant feature as we move
0:01:56 > 0:01:58into the start of the new week.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01In fact there could be three different low pressure
0:02:01 > 0:02:03centres at this stage.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05A lot of uncertainty about exactly where each
0:02:05 > 0:02:08area of unsettled weather will move
0:02:08 > 0:02:11but there will be some outbreaks of rain at times.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14Potentially still some snow over high ground in the north
0:02:14 > 0:02:16but generally it will be rain
0:02:16 > 0:02:19because we're going to stick with that slightly milder feel.
0:02:19 > 0:02:238 degrees in Aberdeen, 12 in London.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26Looking ahead to Tuesday it may well be that an area of high
0:02:26 > 0:02:28pressure starts to build in from the south temporarily
0:02:28 > 0:02:30so more in the way of dry weather.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33Could be some mist and fog patches first thing but Tuesday at this
0:02:33 > 0:02:37stage looks like a mainly fine day with some spells of sunshine.
0:02:37 > 0:02:42Still relatively mild, 9-11 or 12.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45As we move through the middle and latter part of next week we're going
0:02:45 > 0:02:49to see further areas of low pressure drifting in from the south-west.
0:02:49 > 0:02:51So it stays pretty unsettled.
0:02:51 > 0:02:53There will be some spells of rain at times.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56But I want to show you the jet stream for the end of next week
0:02:56 > 0:03:00because by this stage we're expecting it to have dived its
0:03:00 > 0:03:02way southwards once again
0:03:02 > 0:03:07and that leaves the potential for some colder air from the north.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10Particularly by the time we get into next weekend.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12It's by no means a done deal just yet
0:03:12 > 0:03:15but it looks like the end of next week will bring some
0:03:15 > 0:03:17rain at times, equally some spells of sunshine.
0:03:17 > 0:03:22Could be windy at times and just the potential that into next weekend
0:03:22 > 0:03:26things may turn a little colder and it's all because of the jet stream.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28We'll keep a close eye on that over the next few days.
