0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello. Mixed weather for the weekend - some sunshine, some rain -

0:00:05 > 0:00:06but the thing we probably noticed the most,

0:00:06 > 0:00:08the temperatures edging up.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11And in fact with 15.3 Celsius in London on Saturday,

0:00:11 > 0:00:14it was the warmest day of the year so far,

0:00:14 > 0:00:15but it could well be that by next weekend,

0:00:15 > 0:00:18temperatures are going in the opposite direction once again.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21As this forecast looks further ahead than the others,

0:00:21 > 0:00:22we'll get to that in just a moment.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25Now, the reason things have been turning a bit milder,

0:00:25 > 0:00:27this area of low pressure to the south-west of us

0:00:27 > 0:00:30pushing in some mild air northwards across the UK.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33But it did come with some rain and some showers,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35and it will still do that during Monday,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37as it's still close by England and Wales.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41So bands of wet weather circulating around that area of low pressure.

0:00:41 > 0:00:42A few brighter spells.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45The rain just fringing into eastern parts of Northern Ireland,

0:00:45 > 0:00:46the far south of Scotland.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49North of that, mainly cloudy, mainly dry.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51And temperatures have come down a bit compared with the weekend,

0:00:51 > 0:00:53so more of us seeing temperatures

0:00:53 > 0:00:56topping out in single figures once again.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57Now, finally, going into Tuesday,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59that area of low pressure pulls away,

0:00:59 > 0:01:01get a little bump in the isobars -

0:01:01 > 0:01:04that means a ridge of high pressure coming in for Tuesday,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06settling things down. Slow start, mind you,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09a good deal of cloud around particularly eastern parts,

0:01:09 > 0:01:12and still a bit of rain for a time, East Anglia, south-east England.

0:01:12 > 0:01:13Brightening up into the afternoon,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15more especially across western parts,

0:01:15 > 0:01:17and temperatures have edged up a little bit

0:01:17 > 0:01:19so some spots in Scotland, for example,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21getting back into double figures.

0:01:21 > 0:01:22Under clearing skies, though,

0:01:22 > 0:01:25chilly enough for a touch of frost on Tuesday night,

0:01:25 > 0:01:28then for Wednesday, our ridge of high pressure is just about gone

0:01:28 > 0:01:31as low pressure parks itself to the south-west of us

0:01:31 > 0:01:33for the rest of the week.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35It will have a limited attempt during Wednesday

0:01:35 > 0:01:38to bring in a band of wet weather towards the south-west -

0:01:38 > 0:01:41more cloud in the west. Notice the wind arrows, though -

0:01:41 > 0:01:43the most noticeable thing about Wednesday's weather

0:01:43 > 0:01:45will be a strengthening southerly wind.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48More widely, temperatures in double figures, mind you,

0:01:48 > 0:01:50but then again, the wind will be picking up.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52Our area of low pressure to the south-west of us

0:01:52 > 0:01:55will then try to feed a band of cloud and rain

0:01:55 > 0:01:57further east during Thursday. Uncertain progress.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Here it is - may not look exactly like this by Thursday,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02but the best chance for still some sunny spells

0:02:02 > 0:02:04will be across eastern parts.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06The wind more of a south-easterly

0:02:06 > 0:02:08and it does mean something a little bit cooler coming in

0:02:08 > 0:02:10towards the North Sea coast.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13And then on Friday the low pressure is still to the west of us,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16is still trying to feed in cloud and outbreaks of rain north-eastwards

0:02:16 > 0:02:18across the UK. To the south of that, brightening up a bit,

0:02:18 > 0:02:21with a few showers, though temperatures here

0:02:21 > 0:02:23edging up towards 12 or maybe even 13 degrees.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Now, then. Why is that area of low pressure

0:02:26 > 0:02:28parking itself to the west of us,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31not just coming right on through with its wet weather?

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Well, we'll look at the big picture, and it could well be

0:02:33 > 0:02:35that it's reaching a block in the atmosphere.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38The block will be an area of high pressure in Scandinavia.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41The flow of air around that, some colder air coming back in,

0:02:41 > 0:02:45but there's a lot of uncertainty about how cold the air will be

0:02:45 > 0:02:47as it starts to filter through during the course of next weekend.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51If comes right from the east it will be particularly chilly,

0:02:51 > 0:02:54but this latest image is less chilly

0:02:54 > 0:02:56but still colder than what we have at the moment.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58So there's still a lot to play for

0:02:58 > 0:03:00in the detail of next weekend's weather

0:03:00 > 0:03:02in just how cold it may get

0:03:02 > 0:03:05and how widely that colder air will move across the UK.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07But the indications are next weekend,

0:03:07 > 0:03:09or into the start of the following week,

0:03:09 > 0:03:12something colder coming back from the east.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15A chilly wind developing, so wind chill may be more of an issue,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17and a risk of wintry showers - not a guarantee,

0:03:17 > 0:03:21but more towards the north-east of the UK, maybe north-east England

0:03:21 > 0:03:23and into eastern Scotland, especially over higher ground.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25Still loads of play for in the detail

0:03:25 > 0:03:28so we will keep monitoring this as we go through the week.
