0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hello. If you remember nothing else from the next few minutes
0:00:05 > 0:00:07of meteorology,
0:00:07 > 0:00:09please remember that the weekend
0:00:09 > 0:00:10will be a real shot of winter,
0:00:10 > 0:00:13but before that we are still looking towards the Atlantic,
0:00:13 > 0:00:17a relatively mild source of weather, to see what is going to
0:00:17 > 0:00:20go on for most of us during the course of Friday.
0:00:20 > 0:00:22It is still very much about
0:00:22 > 0:00:23a weather front which seems to
0:00:23 > 0:00:24have stalled with intent
0:00:24 > 0:00:26across the eastern side of Scotland,
0:00:26 > 0:00:29central parts too and into the north-east of England
0:00:29 > 0:00:32and it will be joined eventually from the south by another
0:00:32 > 0:00:35weather front bringing the prospect of some pretty hefty showers.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37But at least behind that, there is some sunshine to be had
0:00:37 > 0:00:39for the greater parts of England and Wales
0:00:39 > 0:00:41and a bit of warmth as well.
0:00:41 > 0:00:42From Friday into Saturday, it is
0:00:42 > 0:00:45quite significant that the low-pressure drifts away
0:00:45 > 0:00:46and we begin to look
0:00:46 > 0:00:48to the main event of the weekend,
0:00:48 > 0:00:50that high pressure over Scandinavia,
0:00:50 > 0:00:52which, eventually, will start to
0:00:52 > 0:00:54throw really cold air at us,
0:00:54 > 0:00:55across all parts of the British Isles.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58Riding on that stream of cold air, and there'll be
0:00:58 > 0:01:00plenty of wind through the weekend.
0:01:00 > 0:01:02There will be snow showers,
0:01:02 > 0:01:05not just across eastern parts, I think some of them, given
0:01:05 > 0:01:06the strength the wind, will make it
0:01:06 > 0:01:08right across towards the Welsh mountains.
0:01:08 > 0:01:09So if you are a thinking
0:01:09 > 0:01:11about moving about over the weekend,
0:01:11 > 0:01:12think about snow and ice.
0:01:12 > 0:01:16There will be some disruption, I am sure, over the next few days.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19So BBC local radio will keep you right up-to-date on that.
0:01:19 > 0:01:22Now, Sunday, don't take this too literally,
0:01:22 > 0:01:23but forget about showers for
0:01:23 > 0:01:25southern parts of the British Isles,
0:01:25 > 0:01:27because I think there'll be a more
0:01:27 > 0:01:29organised area of cloud
0:01:29 > 0:01:30and snow working its way
0:01:30 > 0:01:32across the southern half
0:01:32 > 0:01:33of the British Isles.
0:01:33 > 0:01:35Don't take it too literally because we're not sure
0:01:35 > 0:01:37whether it will be a bit higher,
0:01:37 > 0:01:38it could be a bit lower.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41We're not exactly sure, but wherever you are spending the weekend,
0:01:41 > 0:01:42it will be bitterly cold.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45Add in the strength of the wind,
0:01:45 > 0:01:47it could feel like -5, -6, -7.
0:01:47 > 0:01:50Eventually, that more organised belt of weather
0:01:50 > 0:01:53gradually pulls away into the south-western approaches
0:01:53 > 0:01:56and the high pressure begins to drift away from Scandinavia
0:01:56 > 0:01:58and becomes very much ours.
0:01:58 > 0:01:59That is quite important
0:01:59 > 0:02:01because it cuts off the flow
0:02:01 > 0:02:02of really cold air from Scandinavia
0:02:02 > 0:02:06and Siberia and we begin to see something of a sea track
0:02:06 > 0:02:08and that, at this time of year,
0:02:08 > 0:02:10believe it or not is relatively mild.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13Certainly compared to what is going on across Scandinavia and Siberia.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15So it looks as though through Monday,
0:02:15 > 0:02:16we will see some onshore winds
0:02:16 > 0:02:17dragging wintry showers
0:02:17 > 0:02:19across the high ground,
0:02:19 > 0:02:20North York Moors, for example,
0:02:20 > 0:02:22but the temperatures
0:02:22 > 0:02:24just beginning to recover a touch
0:02:24 > 0:02:25from that bitterly cold weekend.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28We keep that process going through Tuesday.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30The isobars just beginning to open up, so not so much
0:02:30 > 0:02:33in the way of wind for the greater part of the British Isles.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37You may not escape that down across East Anglia and the south-east.
0:02:37 > 0:02:38Still a keen northerly wind.
0:02:38 > 0:02:40Never a warm direction.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42But at least things are beginning to settle down
0:02:42 > 0:02:45and notice the temperatures -
0:02:45 > 0:02:477, 8, 9. Back into double figures
0:02:47 > 0:02:49for the favoured few, perhaps,
0:02:49 > 0:02:51in the Greater London area.
0:02:51 > 0:02:53And on into the outlook period,
0:02:53 > 0:02:56at last we begin to see the process of the Atlantic
0:02:56 > 0:02:59really winning out and as a consequence of that,
0:02:59 > 0:03:02on occasion there will be shots of relatively mild air.
0:03:02 > 0:03:03So the weekend -
0:03:03 > 0:03:06really a short, sharp shock.
0:03:06 > 0:03:07Because even as far north
0:03:07 > 0:03:08as Inverness,
0:03:08 > 0:03:11as we get on towards Wednesday and Thursday,
0:03:11 > 0:03:12we'll be pushing towards double figures
0:03:12 > 0:03:14and we will certainly have achieved that
0:03:14 > 0:03:16elsewhere across the British Isles.
0:03:16 > 0:03:20Things, eventually, post the weekend, will turn less cold,
0:03:20 > 0:03:22but because we're seeing an influence from the Atlantic,
0:03:22 > 0:03:24they will be unsettled and, at times, some of those low
0:03:24 > 0:03:28pressures will bring some very wet and some very windy weather.
0:03:28 > 0:03:29Good night.
