:00:00. > :00:00.This is BBC World News Today with me, Alice Baxter.

:00:07. > :00:10.Israel warns it'll continue to destroy tunnels built by Palestinian

:00:11. > :00:15.militants, with or without any possible cease-fire.

:00:16. > :00:20.Despite growing international condemnation,

:00:21. > :00:25.Israel says its military offensive will last for another few days.

:00:26. > :00:33.In Gaza, the UN says residents are facing a precipice,

:00:34. > :00:43.with a quarter of the population displaced from their homes.

:00:44. > :00:50.Before the conflict started, 17,000 people were being housed by the UN.

:00:51. > :00:53.Today it is 220,000. The organisation say that it is

:00:54. > :00:57.overwhelmed and reaching breaking point.

:00:58. > :00:58.After days of frustration, investigators finally reach

:00:59. > :01:00.the crash site of MH17 in eastern Ukraine.

:01:01. > :01:03.From the darkest corners of the internet to your doorstep - how

:01:04. > :01:19.dealers are using the web to push illegal drugs around the world.

:01:20. > :01:25.The United States has said civilian casualties in Gaza are too high,

:01:26. > :01:29.and urged Israel to do more to protect life during its offensive

:01:30. > :01:34.The Pentagon urged Israel to live up to its own high standards,

:01:35. > :01:37.while the White House said the shelling of a UN school on

:01:38. > :01:44.The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said the military

:01:45. > :01:49.will continue to destroy tunnels used by Palestinian militants with

:01:50. > :01:55.The Gaza conflict began 24 days ago and is now the longest war in Gaza

:01:56. > :02:01.Israeli Defence Forces say they are just days away from destroying all

:02:02. > :02:08.of the 32 tunnels that they have identified as being built by Hamas.

:02:09. > :02:13.59,000 army reservists have now been mobilised.

:02:14. > :02:16.Earlier, Israel called up an additional 16 thousand to replace

:02:17. > :02:22.Our World Affairs Correspondent Orla Guerin has been speaking exclusively

:02:23. > :02:33.to an Israeli air force pilot who's been bombing Gaza.

:02:34. > :02:42.This is footage Israel is keen to share, an air strike in Gaza being

:02:43. > :02:46.aborted because children have been spotted. But the UN say that most of

:02:47. > :02:50.those killed by Israel are innocent civilians.

:02:51. > :02:57.Today we met one of the air force pilots who flies over Gaza every

:02:58. > :03:01.day, identifying targets. We cannot show his face. The aircraft used for

:03:02. > :03:08.these missions have cameras mounted underneath and fly at up to 85,000

:03:09. > :03:11.feet. Gaza is a very densely populated

:03:12. > :03:17.area. He shows us in a simulator his birds

:03:18. > :03:23.eye view of the Touraine. It is a very crowded and many people

:03:24. > :03:26.have no way to escape. You are attacking hospitals where people are

:03:27. > :03:29.being treated. At the moment, we are doing

:03:30. > :03:34.everything possible to ensure that the security and safety of both our

:03:35. > :03:39.civilians and as much as possible the Palestinians civilians. We have

:03:40. > :03:43.offered medical aid and field hospital.

:03:44. > :03:50.Would it not be better if you stopped bombing the civilians?

:03:51. > :03:54.Israel has always chosen a diplomatic situation.

:03:55. > :03:55.Some people might ask how you sleep at night.

:03:56. > :04:00.I sleep very well at night, because I know that what we are doing is

:04:01. > :04:08.saving lives, the way I see it. Israeli lives? I know how many

:04:09. > :04:13.attacks I have already called off. Numerous attacks. I know as a fact

:04:14. > :04:18.that I have saved hundreds of -- dozens of lives.

:04:19. > :04:26.But the lives lost in Gaza are according to international pressure

:04:27. > :04:31.on Israel. Today, the Minister said that the offensive will continue.

:04:32. > :04:35.TRANSLATION: We have neutralised dozens of tunnels and we will

:04:36. > :04:41.continue the mission with or without a cease-fire. I will not accept any

:04:42. > :04:46.proposal that will not allow the IDF to complete this task for the safety

:04:47. > :04:51.of Israel. Near the Gaza border, soldiers rest

:04:52. > :04:55.and regroup. An extra 16,000 reservists have been caught up. This

:04:56. > :05:00.teacher has two sons fighting in Gaza and is going to join them.

:05:01. > :05:09.This is our life. Nobody chooses it, we have to do it. It will be the end

:05:10. > :05:14.of the story very soon. The army says that it will finish

:05:15. > :05:20.destroying the attack tunnels within days, but a senior Israeli official

:05:21. > :05:24.has told the BBC that there is no stopwatch for this operation. The

:05:25. > :05:29.international community is pleading for a cease-fire, Israel is not

:05:30. > :05:35.ruling out a much broader offensive if a Hamas attacks don't stop.

:05:36. > :05:42.The choice ahead now for Israel is withdrawal or hit much harder.

:05:43. > :05:45.At a meeting today, the UN warned that the population of Gaza is

:05:46. > :05:47.facing a precipice and called upon the international community

:05:48. > :05:52.A UN official in the region said his staff just couldn't cope.

:05:53. > :05:57.So far, 1400 Palestinians have died in the conflict.

:05:58. > :06:02.And 58 Israelis, all but two of them soldiers The UN estimates

:06:03. > :06:10.that 425,000 Palestinians have been displaced by the fighting.

:06:11. > :06:12.Our international correspondent Ian Pannell reports now

:06:13. > :06:23.on the plight of some of those who have left their homes.

:06:24. > :06:30.A rescue mission to a small town on the southern fringes of Gaza. A

:06:31. > :06:35.front line between Israelis and militants. Every time the Red Cross

:06:36. > :06:41.has tried to get in, they have been shot at. But this week, both sides

:06:42. > :06:47.agreed to a brief cease-fire. We are just here to escort some

:06:48. > :06:56.ambulances from the Palestinian society into, and rescue some

:06:57. > :07:00.wounded people in this town and they have been isolated due to the

:07:01. > :07:05.fighting drink the last few days. What is the situation that?

:07:06. > :07:10.We do not know. It is on the border and it is very tense.

:07:11. > :07:16.The Israelis refuse to let us in, but the team was given the all

:07:17. > :07:21.clear. This town has been cut off by Israel and, many have died and the

:07:22. > :07:28.few who could not escape are trapped.

:07:29. > :07:33.The truce was brief. Unable to stay any longer, the Red Cross pulled

:07:34. > :07:39.out. They recovered a handful of bodies and three elderly residents

:07:40. > :07:44.hiding in the town. This woman is 95 years old. Her

:07:45. > :07:48.family did not know that she was alive until two hours ago. They had

:07:49. > :07:52.fled the fighting, but she was too old to run away at night, says she

:07:53. > :07:58.spent five days living with a neighbour.

:07:59. > :08:04.This 84-year-old man, barely able to stand, he also could not escape.

:08:05. > :08:11.I cannot describe my feelings. It is horrible. We were living in fear for

:08:12. > :08:18.five days. We could not contact them for five days, he barely can walk

:08:19. > :08:30.alone. He can barely make food for himself. It was a nightmare.

:08:31. > :08:32.We found that woman again today -- the man again today, lying on the

:08:33. > :08:38.floor of the classroom that he shares with many others.

:08:39. > :08:44.TRANSLATION: Don't me that life here is better. I want to go home. I was

:08:45. > :08:47.born in that town, God willing, I will died there.

:08:48. > :08:52.He was meant to stay in hospital longer, but they did not have the

:08:53. > :08:56.space due to so many weird people. Before the conflict, there were

:08:57. > :09:03.17,000 people being -- so many wounded people. Before the conflict,

:09:04. > :09:08.there were 17,000 people being housed by the UN, now there are many

:09:09. > :09:11.more thousands. In this school alone, there are more than five

:09:12. > :09:16.dozen people living and taking shelter here.

:09:17. > :09:24.-- 500 people. The UN says that few places are safe

:09:25. > :09:26.any more. Does is beginning to feel near breaking point. Gaza is

:09:27. > :09:34.beginning to feel. For more on the unfolding

:09:35. > :09:37.humanitarian crisis in Gaz,a I'm She's the spokesperson

:09:38. > :09:52.for the International Committee You were in Gaza last week. Tell me

:09:53. > :09:55.what you saw. A group of seven colleagues from the

:09:56. > :10:02.International Red Cross, we went into Gaza 12 days ago. The moment

:10:03. > :10:07.that we went inside the street, there was heavy fighting taking

:10:08. > :10:12.place. Being able to be in Gaza before, I was quite surprised,

:10:13. > :10:18.because there was nobody industries, no people walking and there was a

:10:19. > :10:23.lot of fighting, so then every day, the situation is happening. There is

:10:24. > :10:33.a high intensity of combat taking place. Now it has a direct impact on

:10:34. > :10:39.the civilian population. The combat is taking place in the north-east of

:10:40. > :10:45.the Gaza Strip, as well as in the city of Gaza. The consequences of

:10:46. > :10:51.this is that 350,000 people today are displaced. They were forced to

:10:52. > :10:55.leave their houses to try and find a safe place in Gaza. If there is a

:10:56. > :11:04.safe place. There are 7000 people who are wounded, and over a thousand

:11:05. > :11:07.who have lost their lives. On the other hand, the infrastructure of

:11:08. > :11:13.Gaza is going into a critical time now, because the power plant was

:11:14. > :11:21.severely damaged a couple of days ago, so it was providing 30% of the

:11:22. > :11:26.electricity in the Gaza Strip. The rest of the electricity was coming

:11:27. > :11:29.from Israel or Egypt, depending on the alleged combines, where most of

:11:30. > :11:36.the time they have been damaged or broken. -- of electrical lines. The

:11:37. > :11:41.International Red Cross, we are working with the Palestinian

:11:42. > :11:48.Authority 's. The more fighting that is taking place, we are finding that

:11:49. > :11:52.our job is trying to do our best to evacuate the wounded to take them to

:11:53. > :11:57.the hospital. That is one of the main activities. The other one is to

:11:58. > :12:04.repair the infrastructure. The problem is that if we repair and

:12:05. > :12:07.political line, as we did before, we managed to provide electricity for

:12:08. > :12:13.800,000 Palestinians, the following day, though, the lines were damaged.

:12:14. > :12:16.So it is very difficult to work under these circumstances. The

:12:17. > :12:22.intensity of the combat is affecting the population directly.

:12:23. > :12:27.This lack of electricity and power and water, as I understand, how was

:12:28. > :12:31.that directly impacting on your attempts to treat people and to get

:12:32. > :12:36.appropriate medical equipment into where you need to, such as

:12:37. > :12:40.ambulances? The whole situation is the

:12:41. > :12:48.infrastructure is not working. It makes the work of Palestinian

:12:49. > :12:51.doctors and hospitals and any international humanitarian

:12:52. > :12:57.organisation who are trying to provide, the work is getting more

:12:58. > :13:01.and more difficult because of the situation. On the other hand, we

:13:02. > :13:04.also need to talk about the psychological impact of this

:13:05. > :13:09.conflict on the lives of thousands of Palestinians. The number of

:13:10. > :13:12.children who unfortunately have lost their lives. Everyone is working

:13:13. > :13:19.around the clock. Doctors and nurses. The ambulance drivers.

:13:20. > :13:27.Everyone is offended by this conflict. So we are requesting --

:13:28. > :13:32.everyone is affected by this conflict. We are questing that the

:13:33. > :13:39.Palestinians be able to take the wounded and the ill people to the

:13:40. > :13:46.hospitals. We are finding that the different forces, that we have seven

:13:47. > :13:49.ambulances, we need to go to a number of areas because we receive

:13:50. > :13:53.so many phone calls. We want to go to the neighbourhood to take the

:13:54. > :14:04.people out and taken to the hospital. Sometimes this task is a

:14:05. > :14:08.huge challenge for the Palestine Society, because the fighting is

:14:09. > :14:12.taking place. We need an agreement, we cannot risk the lives of our

:14:13. > :14:15.people when they are trying to get the wounded out of those districts

:14:16. > :14:22.where we know that the fighting is very intense.

:14:23. > :14:27.We will have to leave it there. Thank you for sharing your memories

:14:28. > :14:28.of having worked in Gaza. The spokesperson for the Red Cross.

:14:29. > :14:33.Thank you. In eastern Ukraine, international

:14:34. > :14:35.investigators have reached Fighting between government

:14:36. > :14:38.and rebel forces had prevented them The investigators are from Australia

:14:39. > :14:42.and the Netherlands. All 298 people on board died in

:14:43. > :14:46.the plane crash earlier this month. 193 of them were Dutch,

:14:47. > :14:56.27 of them were Australian. Dutch policeman Pieter Jaap

:14:57. > :14:58.Aalbersberg is the head of the Flight 17 Recovery Mission and

:14:59. > :15:16.explained what the team did today. The The experts have started the

:15:17. > :15:26.search and today they have not seen anything. Once we get entry will

:15:27. > :15:27.will -- we will try to search amongst the remains and personal

:15:28. > :15:47.belongings. It is a positive development, but a

:15:48. > :15:53.word of caution about how much we can read into it, because it is a

:15:54. > :15:59.small mission, a reconnaissance mission today. Checking out the

:16:00. > :16:03.site, some of the wreckage, possibly some of the human remains that are

:16:04. > :16:07.still in that area of the countryside. But the real work can

:16:08. > :16:11.only begin when the larger teams of Dutch and Australian police who are

:16:12. > :16:16.several hours's drive from the main conflict zone, that is when the main

:16:17. > :16:24.work will begin. First of all, to collect any human remains, victims

:16:25. > :16:27.on board the flight and their belongings, only once they have done

:16:28. > :16:33.that will be then investigate the wreckage in that large area of the

:16:34. > :16:37.country in eastern Ukraine. Despite this positive step, as you call it,

:16:38. > :16:48.what is the situation regarding the fighting in and around the crash

:16:49. > :16:54.site and done yet? -- and Donetsk? They can only begin, when the

:16:55. > :16:59.fighting dies down, possibly when the Ukrainian army takes control of

:17:00. > :17:04.that site, but we believe that neither the Ukrainian army or the

:17:05. > :17:11.rebels have control of that area of countryside completely. Donetsk is

:17:12. > :17:16.the regional capital, it is held by pro-Russian rebels, it is being

:17:17. > :17:19.shelled by the Ukrainian army, civilians inside the city have died

:17:20. > :17:24.in the last few days. The fighting has intensified inside that city.

:17:25. > :17:29.The Ukrainian army seems to have control of that territory around

:17:30. > :17:33.those two cities, but of course taking either of those two cities

:17:34. > :17:39.would be a lot harder and, of course, it will probably come at a

:17:40. > :17:40.much higher human cost for any civilian population left ear, if and

:17:41. > :17:46.when that happens. Now a look at some

:17:47. > :17:48.of the days other news. The World Health Organisation is

:17:49. > :17:51.launching a $100 million plan to combat the deadly Ebola outbreak

:17:52. > :17:53.in West Africa. The WHO Director General will meet

:17:54. > :17:56.Presidents of affected West African nations in Guinea on Friday to

:17:57. > :17:58.outline a coordinated response. 729 people have already been

:17:59. > :18:03.killed by the Ebola outbreak. Liberia and Sierra Leone have

:18:04. > :18:06.announced broad emergency measures The European Court of Human Rights

:18:07. > :18:19.has ruled that Russia must pay shareholders

:18:20. > :18:21.in the former oil company Yukos It follows a similar court ruling

:18:22. > :18:25.in The Hague that claimed Russian officials had manipulated the legal

:18:26. > :18:28.system to bankrupt the company and jail its boss, the Kremlin

:18:29. > :18:31.critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Moscow has condemned the ruling

:18:32. > :18:44.as politically motivated. Rescue workers in western India are

:18:45. > :18:47.still trying to find survivors trapped under mud and debris after a

:18:48. > :18:49.landslide destroyed a village. At least 30 people have been killed and

:18:50. > :18:53.up to 200 were buried in Malin, near Like the iceberg,

:18:54. > :19:01.most of the internet is out There are ways of using it,

:19:02. > :19:08.and indeed many people do. And some use it to

:19:09. > :19:11.sell illegal drugs. The BBC has learned that the amount

:19:12. > :19:15.of illegal drugs listed for sale on the dark net appears to have more

:19:16. > :19:33.than doubled in less than a year. Vacuum packed with a first-class

:19:34. > :19:38.stamp, delivery guaranteed. Sam gets his cannabis through the post. He

:19:39. > :19:42.used to buy it from a dealer on the street, now he simply logs onto the

:19:43. > :19:50.so-called dark net and peas with untraceable bitcoins. His words are

:19:51. > :19:54.spoken by an actor. I bought cannabis around every two or three

:19:55. > :19:59.weeks from a street vendor, it was fairly terrifying. Practicality?

:20:00. > :20:03.They do not even have to leave my house, I can click a button and it

:20:04. > :20:09.will come the next day. Safety reasons, I do not have to reveal me

:20:10. > :20:17.identity at all. No one will know who I am. I feel safe using it.

:20:18. > :20:19.After months of negotiation we persuaded a dark net drug dealer in

:20:20. > :20:22.California to talk to us but he would only do it anonymously and

:20:23. > :20:48.using encrypted e-mail. He said... The FBI calls it the most

:20:49. > :20:53.sophisticated market on the Internet. Last year the FBI closed

:20:54. > :20:58.down the best-known drugs market on the Internet. Its founder was

:20:59. > :21:03.arrested. But that has not stopped its trade. The and buyers use

:21:04. > :21:08.special browsers and encrypted software. They are anonymous and

:21:09. > :21:12.hard to trace. Which, for the authorities in the US, makes this

:21:13. > :21:18.the front line. A sorting office in California, handling over 1 million

:21:19. > :21:25.letters and parcels a month, each one x-rayed and inspected.

:21:26. > :21:34.How often are you discovering illegal drugs? Daily. We find

:21:35. > :21:37.something less it everyday. What they find here shows that it is a

:21:38. > :21:44.truly global problem. We know that there is a trade in illegal drugs

:21:45. > :21:48.from the USA to the UK, but Customs officials here say that it also

:21:49. > :21:55.calls on the other direction. This they seized in the post, it is

:21:56. > :22:00.synthetic methamphetamine and synthetic cannabis, packaged up and

:22:01. > :22:10.sent by the Royal Mail. The crime agency says that it works closely

:22:11. > :22:15.with the Royal Mail. They think that they might be doing online shopping,

:22:16. > :22:19.they are wrong. They are committing crimes, they are working with

:22:20. > :22:26.illegal drugs, they are fuelling the illegal drug trade. It may take some

:22:27. > :22:30.time, they may be difficult to get at, but that does not mean that they

:22:31. > :22:35.are out of our reach. But it does seem like more people like Sam will

:22:36. > :22:38.continue to buy the drugs hidden in the dark net.

:22:39. > :22:39.Now to some extraordinary images from Brazil.

:22:40. > :22:42.A group of previously undiscovered indigenous people from the Amazon

:22:43. > :22:45.has come face to face with a settled community of villagers for the first

:22:46. > :22:48.time in the Brazilian state of Acre, according to authorities.

:22:49. > :22:51.Experts believe the tribesmen may have left the safety of their tribe

:22:52. > :22:54.owing to threats posed by illegal loggers or drug traffickers.

:22:55. > :23:13.This is the moment it is believed an isolated tribe from the Amazon made

:23:14. > :23:20.its first contact with the outside world. The meeting happened a month

:23:21. > :23:22.ago. But the video was only released this week by the Brazilian

:23:23. > :23:29.government. Seven indigenous young men made contact with the settled

:23:30. > :23:44.community in this state of area Mack, near the border with police.

:23:45. > :23:47.-- near the state of Acre. The men were filmed and warned not to take

:23:48. > :23:53.anything for fear that they might fall ill. But they still took tools

:23:54. > :24:00.and clothes. The group was already carrying objects. It is believed to

:24:01. > :24:05.be had taken them from other villages. They retreated into the

:24:06. > :24:12.forest and returned the next day. Coughing and sneezing, they had to

:24:13. > :24:16.be treated for a cold. By choice, and contacted indigenous groups

:24:17. > :24:19.don't normally reach out to people outside their trades, that is why

:24:20. > :24:24.experts say that these men could possibly be looking for help. Some

:24:25. > :24:29.speculate that team-mate have crossed -- that they might have

:24:30. > :24:31.crossed the border from Peru under pressure from drug dealers or other

:24:32. > :24:34.groups. Paris is not known for its wildlife,
