:00:00. > :00:09.This is BBC World News Today with me Daniela Ritorto.

:00:10. > :00:16.A long-term ceasefire is agreed between the Palestinians and Israel.

:00:17. > :00:20.Crowds celebrate with gunfire on the streets of Gaza City.

:00:21. > :00:24.We will be looking at what has been agreed.

:00:25. > :00:26.A stiff handshake between Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian

:00:27. > :00:31.counterpart in Minsk, just hours after Kiev released video of Russian

:00:32. > :00:39.A new-look government has been unveiled in France,

:00:40. > :00:50.but will the new cabinet just be facing the same old problems?

:00:51. > :00:54.And she's back! Kate Bush takes to the stage

:00:55. > :01:11.at London's Hammersmith Apollo for her first live show since 1979.

:01:12. > :01:18.After seven weeks and more than 2,000 deaths, a long-term ceasefire

:01:19. > :01:21.has been agreed between the Israelis and Palestinians to end

:01:22. > :01:26.It officially came into force two hours ago.

:01:27. > :01:28.Despite many earlier temporary ceasefires,

:01:29. > :01:30.this time both sides say they're committed to a long-term truce.

:01:31. > :01:36.Let's take a look at some of the details.

:01:37. > :01:40.The agreement involves the opening of Gaza's border

:01:41. > :01:45.crossings with Israel and Egypt for aid and reconstruction supplies,

:01:46. > :01:48.as well as a widening of its fishing zone in the Mediterranean.

:01:49. > :01:51.The two sides will meet again in a month's time where they're

:01:52. > :01:53.expected to talk about other sticking points, including

:01:54. > :01:55.the release of 100 Palestinian prisoners recently rearrested

:01:56. > :02:07.Let's go live now to Jerusalem and speak to Kevin Connolly.

:02:08. > :02:15.I guess my question is why now? What gave?

:02:16. > :02:21.This was the unlimited cease-fire that both sides were waiting for.

:02:22. > :02:26.Both sides claiming victory, not clear what pushed either side to

:02:27. > :02:34.agree. It is clear the biggest force behind the talks were the Egyptians.

:02:35. > :02:38.The Palestinian president thanked Qatar for their help and the

:02:39. > :02:45.Americans for their help, so it could be right that pressure was put

:02:46. > :02:54.on the political leader of Hamas and was a sticking point to the talks.

:02:55. > :02:59.Perhaps pressure was put on him by Qatar. It is difficult to know what

:03:00. > :03:02.happens behind the scenes. But we know both sides will meet cam with

:03:03. > :03:09.calm, they will continue to hold back and not fire and within that

:03:10. > :03:10.context you are more likely to see reconstruction following in over the

:03:11. > :03:26.borders. -- cam. -- were expecting it to be sooner when

:03:27. > :03:30.the Israelis and Palestinians need sooner and start discussing some of

:03:31. > :03:35.these infrastructure projects, things like sea ports and airports

:03:36. > :03:39.that have been on the table for many years and have not been resolved.

:03:40. > :03:46.There is a lots to be seen and it is a huge challenge. In the meantime,

:03:47. > :03:49.we are at this stage, like you said, with an unending cease-fire, so

:03:50. > :03:59.there is no time limit dependent on any other negotiations and we are

:04:00. > :04:02.expecting the cam to carry on. -- calm.

:04:03. > :04:04.Here's the moment the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, confirmed

:04:05. > :04:17.We have managed to declare our acceptance to the Egyptian

:04:18. > :04:21.initiative, with Gaza being provided with foodstuff and supplies and

:04:22. > :04:39.reconstruction efforts, desperately needed. We confirm that our full

:04:40. > :04:43.appreciation Egypt who have done a lot for a long time to reach a

:04:44. > :04:49.formula that all parties could agree to. And also confirm that the state

:04:50. > :04:51.of Qatar has also participated in that.

:04:52. > :04:53.Mahmoud Abbas there. The Israeli government spokesman

:04:54. > :05:04.Mark Regev is in Jerusalem for us. Hamas is claiming this as a victory.

:05:05. > :05:10.We saw gunfire in the streets there. Is this an Israeli victory, though?

:05:11. > :05:15.First of all, let's hope the cease-fire holds. We have had a

:05:16. > :05:29.whole series that have been violated by Hamas and we hope this does well.

:05:30. > :05:35.Is it a victory for Israel? Our goal was to end rocket fire on Israeli

:05:36. > :05:45.civilians, to end the terra tunnels. --

:05:46. > :06:00.Terror. Our Israel is safer than they were 50 days ago? -- are

:06:01. > :06:10.Israelis. They are safer as the network of tunnels has been

:06:11. > :06:15.eliminated. We have taken out a large part of their missile

:06:16. > :06:19.stockpiles, their rocket arsenals, that has been achieved, and I think

:06:20. > :06:25.Hamas leadership understands today, probably better than before, that it

:06:26. > :06:29.is not in their interest to target Israeli civilians. But the proof of

:06:30. > :06:36.the pudding will be in the eating. I hope Hamas honours this commitment

:06:37. > :06:40.is to nonviolence. If they do, we can start normalising our

:06:41. > :06:48.relationship with Gaza. What with that look like? We impose

:06:49. > :06:52.restrictions on Gaza because there was a security threat. They were

:06:53. > :06:56.shooting rockets at our people, they were conducting attacks. If that is

:06:57. > :07:01.to cease, that allows us to have a more normal relationship regarding

:07:02. > :07:05.fishing and border crossings and other issues that are important to

:07:06. > :07:08.the people of Gaza. Many thanks for joining us.

:07:09. > :07:12.My pleasure. It was an awkward handshake,

:07:13. > :07:14.but the presidents of Russia and Ukraine did meet

:07:15. > :07:17.for the first time in months today. The meeting came hours after Ukraine

:07:18. > :07:19.detained ten Russian soldiers on its soil, claiming they were

:07:20. > :07:22.on a special mission 20 kilometres But officials

:07:23. > :07:30.in Moscow say the soldiers crossed Our correspondent Steve Rosenberg

:07:31. > :07:48.reports from close to Ukrainian tanks on the move. The

:07:49. > :08:00.front line is ten miles from here. But it felt much closer. This is the

:08:01. > :08:10.town. They have grown used to the sound of water here. -- war. At the

:08:11. > :08:19.local hospital, casualties keep arriving. This person lost a leg. It

:08:20. > :08:25.is Russia she blames. She believes Moscow is behind the rebellion in

:08:26. > :08:30.eastern Ukraine. TRANSLATION: Dear Mr Putin, we are told that fighters

:08:31. > :08:35.and weapons are coming from Russia. Take pity on us as we are choking

:08:36. > :08:45.from Greece and blood. Please take back your men. -- grief.

:08:46. > :08:50.Ukraine released a video of Russian paratroopers who have been captured

:08:51. > :08:54.in eastern Ukraine. Russia denies sending troops. A military source

:08:55. > :09:00.told a Russian news agency that the men had crossed over by accident.

:09:01. > :09:04.Embarrassing for Moscow, but it had not stopped Ukraine's President

:09:05. > :09:09.Petro Poroshenko shaking hands with the Russian president at a summit in

:09:10. > :09:12.Minsk. Expectations for the meeting were low, it is unlikely to change

:09:13. > :09:14.the reality on the ground any time soon.

:09:15. > :09:17.were low, it is unlikely to change the reality In recent weeks,

:09:18. > :09:22.Ukrainian forces have made some gains in the fight against the

:09:23. > :09:28.separatists. But the militants are digging in and there is no end in

:09:29. > :09:32.sight to the fighting. This was Donetsk today, the pro-Russian

:09:33. > :09:37.fighters that control the city accuse the Ukrainian military of

:09:38. > :09:42.indiscriminate shelling. In one underground shelter, Marina says she

:09:43. > :09:47.wants her old life back. TRANSLATION: A peaceful life, where

:09:48. > :09:50.children can walk outside without fear. For now, it is life in the

:09:51. > :09:53.basement that is the safer option. For more on Ukraine,

:09:54. > :09:57.you can visit our website. There you'll find background

:09:58. > :10:00.and analysis on key figures in the conflict, as well as a

:10:01. > :10:15.timeline on the crisis in Ukraine. An independent investigation has

:10:16. > :10:20.found evidence of what it calls appalling abuse of at least 1400

:10:21. > :10:24.children in a town in northern England. The investigation over a

:10:25. > :10:28.period of 16 years as girls as young as 11 were raped many times over and

:10:29. > :10:36.that local authorities knew about it.

:10:37. > :10:46.For more than a decade, young children face -- faced brutality. We

:10:47. > :10:50.know that the police and council both knew. It is hard to describe

:10:51. > :11:02.the appalling nature of the abuse the victims suffered. Today the

:11:03. > :11:07.failings were revealed. They were traffic to other towns and cities in

:11:08. > :11:11.the North of England. They were taken, beaten and intimidated. There

:11:12. > :11:15.were examples of children being doused with petrol and been

:11:16. > :11:19.threatened to be set alight. They were threatened with guns, maybe to

:11:20. > :11:25.witness rates and threatened that they would be next if they told

:11:26. > :11:31.anyone. -- made to witness rates. The report reveals that young

:11:32. > :11:35.children, many in care, were repeatedly... There are some things

:11:36. > :11:42.that I don't remember, but there are things I will never forget. We have

:11:43. > :11:47.protected this woman's identity. Speaking to Panorama, she said she

:11:48. > :11:52.was 14 when the abuse began. The man that allegedly groomed and raped her

:11:53. > :11:56.has never been arrested. The police were aware and they never stopped

:11:57. > :12:02.it. I think it encouraged him and it almost became a game to him, he was

:12:03. > :12:09.untouchable. The report says the abusers were mainly from Britain's

:12:10. > :12:18.Pakistani community. Today's inquiry says their was concern about

:12:19. > :12:24.highlighting their ethnicity. The report says it wants to downplay the

:12:25. > :12:33.ethnic dimensional. They were more concerned about: -- more concerned

:12:34. > :12:40.about community cohesion. There were many people that ought to have been

:12:41. > :12:48.better protected. I am deeply sorry for it. Should you consider your

:12:49. > :12:53.position? The report makes it plain that services have improved and they

:12:54. > :12:58.are improved under my tenure. Can people have confidence in Rotherham

:12:59. > :13:05.Council? I think the report indicates they can and that services

:13:06. > :13:13.have improved. An apology from the police, too, the force ignorant

:13:14. > :13:18.victims. We recognise we failed. From the start, I wanted to offer a

:13:19. > :13:24.sincere apology to victims and families. Were told that change is

:13:25. > :13:28.here. Council and police say victims were listened to. Too late for the

:13:29. > :13:38.childhoods, ruined by years of abuse.

:13:39. > :13:42.The first votes in the Scottish independence referendum are close to

:13:43. > :13:47.being cast. Postal ballots have been sent out from today. Last night, the

:13:48. > :14:00.final debate featured fiery exchanges. Let -- and they clashed

:14:01. > :14:05.on the currency, the NHS and Britain's Trident nuclear

:14:06. > :14:06.deterrence. A snap poll of Scott says that Alex Salmond was the

:14:07. > :14:10.better performer. Now a look at some

:14:11. > :14:12.of the days other news. Senior American officials say

:14:13. > :14:15.President Obama has authorised surveillance flights over Syria

:14:16. > :14:17.intended to gather intelligence on Defence officials say Mr Obama

:14:18. > :14:21.approved reconnaissance flights over The US is already carrying out air

:14:22. > :14:24.strikes against Islamic State The World Health Organisation's

:14:25. > :14:30.calling for a ban on the use of It also wants sales

:14:31. > :14:36.to children to stop. In a report,

:14:37. > :14:38.the health body says there must be no more claims that the devices can

:14:39. > :14:41.help smokers quit, until there is Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano has

:14:42. > :14:49.been hit by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake, the largest since

:14:50. > :14:53.tremors began in the area last week. The country's weather bureau said

:14:54. > :14:56.despite the shock - the fourth magnitude five quake

:14:57. > :15:01.in 48 hours - there is still no sign The president of Iraq's autonomous

:15:02. > :15:15.Kurdish region has said that Iran supplied weapons and ammunition to

:15:16. > :15:18.Iraqi Kurds to help them fight President Massoud Barzani made

:15:19. > :15:21.the remarks as the Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif

:15:22. > :15:24.visited the region's capital, Irbil. Speaking

:15:25. > :15:25.at a joint press conference, Mr Zarif said Iran would not be

:15:26. > :15:41.sending any soldiers to the region. In The key people require

:15:42. > :15:48.assistance, including defence assistance.

:15:49. > :15:50.-- the people of Iraq. We do not intend to send soldiers there. We

:15:51. > :15:56.believe that the volunteers and intend to send soldiers there. We

:15:57. > :16:05.regular army are quite capable of defending their territory.

:16:06. > :16:10.The UN says that one of its helicopters has crashed in Sudan.

:16:11. > :16:13.Three crewmen were killed and one was injured. They said that the

:16:14. > :16:16.cargo helicopter may have been shot down in an area that is contested

:16:17. > :16:19.between the government and rebels. The French president,

:16:20. > :16:20.Francois Hollande, has unveiled his new government, after it was

:16:21. > :16:23.forced to resign on Monday. The ministers who publicly

:16:24. > :16:25.criticised the President's economic policies are out, but some familiar

:16:26. > :16:28.names have remained in their posts. We'll be live in France

:16:29. > :16:30.for some analysis in a moment, but first let's take a look at what

:16:31. > :17:44.kind of France will they inherit. We will speak to an expert via web

:17:45. > :17:49.link. Bruno Cautres,

:17:50. > :17:51.from the Centre for the Study of French Political Life, joins us

:17:52. > :18:04.now via web link from Grenoble. The third cabinet this week. Will it

:18:05. > :18:09.make a difference? Most of the Cabinet were already

:18:10. > :18:16.bad. There has been one significant change, the former adviser of

:18:17. > :18:22.Francois Hollande, who is believed to be the right side of his brain.

:18:23. > :18:31.It is the most important sign, which is that he will replace him.

:18:32. > :18:39.We should talk about Francois Hollande. He has faced open

:18:40. > :18:43.rebellion. He is only two years into his presidency. His ratings are

:18:44. > :18:49.abysmal, so is the economy. What will it take to turn things around?

:18:50. > :18:56.I do not think that there is any choice for him, he has to do go the

:18:57. > :19:02.same direction that he has. He said in January that he was going to be a

:19:03. > :19:09.social democrat. He wants France to reduce its deficit. There is the

:19:10. > :19:14.question of the competitiveness of the French economy. He went so far

:19:15. > :19:21.into that direction now that there will be no U-turn to the left.

:19:22. > :19:27.We have seen the headlines today about the crisis on the left. But

:19:28. > :19:31.the right side is a mess as well, they have no leader and they are

:19:32. > :19:41.divided. Yes, the right is divided. The only

:19:42. > :19:47.winner is Le Pen. The right is just waiting for the return of Sarkozy,

:19:48. > :19:51.which will probably be announced in September.

:19:52. > :19:57.I heard some analysis today that was interesting that was put to me that

:19:58. > :20:01.there was criticism of the posterity policy being introduced by Francois

:20:02. > :20:14.Hollande and the government. But France is not being steered enough

:20:15. > :20:18.-- is not being Ostia -- is not cutting costs enough in the eyes of

:20:19. > :20:25.the world? Yes, I think that Francois Hollande

:20:26. > :20:31.will explain in a few days that he is suffering from the political

:20:32. > :20:39.situation in France that actually he needs help from Germany and Angela

:20:40. > :20:45.Merkel, and to delays, because it is obvious that France will not be able

:20:46. > :20:52.to reduce its deficit in the short time. It is likely that the GDP will

:20:53. > :20:56.be more than 4%. So I think that Francois Hollande will try and

:20:57. > :21:02.convince the Germans that he has now shown that he is going in the

:21:03. > :21:04.direction of competitiveness, but he needs help and he needs to be

:21:05. > :21:12.supported by Germany. The enigmatic singer Kate Bush is

:21:13. > :21:14.just minutes away from taking to the stage

:21:15. > :21:17.for the first time in 35 years. It was in 1979 that she performed

:21:18. > :21:20.her one and only live tour And that's where she

:21:21. > :21:35.and her fans are right now. I can feel the excitement from here.

:21:36. > :21:45.What is happening? Yes, the last time at Kate Bush

:21:46. > :21:50.played a gig was 1979, here at the same venue, Hammersmith Apollo. I

:21:51. > :21:55.have spoken to people who have come from Australia, Thailand, Los

:21:56. > :22:01.Angeles, some without tickets, desperate to get in. This man has

:22:02. > :22:08.been standing here with a sign. How happy are you? I am delighted.

:22:09. > :22:15.People are coming from all over to see the singer that they thought

:22:16. > :22:23.would never play live again. # It is me, Cathy #.

:22:24. > :22:29.This is the moment that made Kate Bush a star, in 1978. Wuthering

:22:30. > :22:36.Heights was the first song by a woman to top the charts. The next

:22:37. > :22:42.year, she went even further. It was an experience that she loved.

:22:43. > :22:50.I you really happy? I cannot believe the audience.

:22:51. > :22:55.Since then, Kate Bush has released at albums, one at albums, 18 BRIT

:22:56. > :23:00.Award and become one of music's most influential artists.

:23:01. > :23:05.None of her songs are normal. She is just too she is. She is a

:23:06. > :23:11.mystery. What she has never done is play

:23:12. > :23:15.another show until tonight. But why? The time has not been right. I think

:23:16. > :23:20.that she has spent her time writing and recording these albums and she

:23:21. > :23:25.is a perfectionist. I think that is what she felt her time was best

:23:26. > :23:30.spent doing, was creating music and also raising her family.

:23:31. > :23:35.But now the wait is finally over. I cannot wait. It is some exciting.

:23:36. > :23:42.I have waited 35 years that it will happen now. I have no words.

:23:43. > :23:48.Just like her life, these shows have been shrouded in mystery. Although

:23:49. > :23:52.her concert poster shows her in a life jacket, leading to expectations

:23:53. > :23:58.that there could be a watery theme. Tonight, people will find out.

:23:59. > :24:02.Yes, so much excitement about a night's gig, mainly because people

:24:03. > :24:08.do not know what will be in them. There could be a theme about water.

:24:09. > :24:13.He pulled believe that she has been training in a flotation tank. I will

:24:14. > :24:20.see if I can speak to someone. You live on the BBC. I have seen some

:24:21. > :24:27.people arriving. Frank Skinner, Lily Allen. Here are some more people

:24:28. > :24:37.arriving. They are getting their tickets out. You are live on the

:24:38. > :24:39.BBC. Where have you come from? Not too far away. What are you

:24:40. > :24:43.expecting? It will be incredible.

:24:44. > :24:51.Who is the biggest fan. I am. I am expecting to say hello to

:24:52. > :24:56.Kate Bush afterwards. You have a secret past. What you

:24:57. > :25:00.think that she will be playing? I hope that she will play all the

:25:01. > :25:06.hits. It will be really the actual call.

:25:07. > :25:09.Why has she not been playing music for so long?

:25:10. > :25:12.She has been looking after her little boy.

:25:13. > :25:19.It looks like you manage to get here. Did you buy your tickets?

:25:20. > :25:25.I did. I know somebody in the band. She has not played for 35 years. How

:25:26. > :25:31.much excitement is there? There is quite a lot. Look around.

:25:32. > :25:36.There is a buzz in the air. When it starts in 20 minutes time.

:25:37. > :25:44.Enjoy meeting her afterwards. There are the fans heading into Kate

:25:45. > :25:47.Bush's first gig in more than 20 years.

:25:48. > :25:50.Now, we do like to bring you pictures of the weird and wonderful

:25:51. > :25:52.here on World News Today and here's a beauty from Australia.

:25:53. > :25:54.Two farmers in Tasmania found this sheep, who

:25:55. > :25:57.they believe has been wandering wild for six years and never been shorn.

:25:58. > :26:00.Peter and Netty Hazel discovered the animal, they nicknamed Shaun,

:26:01. > :26:04.wandering on their farm and decided to take him in.

:26:05. > :26:07.They estimate his coat weighs 20 kilos.

:26:08. > :26:11.They plan to shearing Shaun to see if he can break the record for

:26:12. > :26:26.Before we go, here are the main headlines.

:26:27. > :26:32.After seven weeks, more than 2000 deaths, a long-term cease-fire has

:26:33. > :26:37.been agreed between the Israelis and Palestinians. This is the scene live
