:00:07. > :00:08.I'm Alice Baxter with BBC World News.

:00:09. > :00:11.Police reveal the massive haul of weapons found after America's

:00:12. > :00:20.deadliest mass shooting for three years but still no motive.

:00:21. > :00:24.14 people killed in California after a married couple open fire

:00:25. > :00:31.President Obama vows that the police will get to the bottom of it.

:00:32. > :00:34.It is possible that this was terrorist-related but we don't know.

:00:35. > :00:44.It's also possible that it was workplace related.

:00:45. > :00:53.The US Defence Secretary announces the opening of all military combat

:00:54. > :00:56.To succeed in our mission of the national defence, we cannot afford

:00:57. > :00:59.to cut ourselves off from half of the country's talents and skills.

:01:00. > :01:02.We have to take full advantage of every individual who can meet

:01:03. > :01:17.Oscar Pistorius faces a return to jail, after South Africa's Appeal

:01:18. > :01:19.More arrests are made in Switzerland over multi-million-dollar bribery

:01:20. > :01:26.allegations at Fifa on the very day it announces major reforms.

:01:27. > :01:29.I am aware that the road will be difficult, the challenge is there

:01:30. > :01:41.And the gene therapy breakthrough which

:01:42. > :02:02.could prevent diseases being passed from one generation to the next.

:02:03. > :02:04.Police in the Californian city of San Bernardino are still

:02:05. > :02:08.searching for a motive to Wednesday's mass shooting which left

:02:09. > :02:16.The suspects, a husband and wife, dropped off their six-month-old

:02:17. > :02:18.daughter before arming themselves with assault rifles and opening fire

:02:19. > :02:30.President Obama said the United States has a history

:02:31. > :02:32.Well, within the last hour, the assistant director of LA branch

:02:33. > :02:35.of the FBI, David Bowdich, gave a news conference in which he

:02:36. > :02:38.went through what investigators know so far about the suspects.

:02:39. > :02:42.If you look at the amount of obvious preplanning that went in, the amount

:02:43. > :02:44.of armaments he had, the weapons and ammunition, there was obviously

:02:45. > :02:54.We don't know if this was the intended target or if there was

:02:55. > :02:56.something that triggered him to do this immediately.

:02:57. > :02:58.We just don't know and again that is going to take time

:02:59. > :03:04.It appears he came back into the US in July 2040, as I said earlier.

:03:05. > :03:08.I do not know all the countries he visited.

:03:09. > :03:15.We know he did go to Pakistan at one point and we know she is here on

:03:16. > :03:17.a K-1 Visa under a Pakistani passport.

:03:18. > :03:18.Well, for the latest into the investigation

:03:19. > :03:25.our correspondent James Cook has sent this report from the scene.

:03:26. > :03:32.The streets, awash with police, hunting for a young man who had

:03:33. > :03:36.gone on the rampage with his wife at a festive party.

:03:37. > :03:38.Syed Farook reportedly left the gathering after a disagreement,

:03:39. > :03:43.before returning with Tashfeen Malik, armed with automatic weapons.

:03:44. > :03:49.We have two suspects both dressed in black.

:03:50. > :03:53.They went into the room and locked the door.

:03:54. > :04:04.I haven't tried to call her because I didn't want the phone ringing.

:04:05. > :04:07.And so the hunt began and hours after the shooting parts

:04:08. > :04:18.This is the second scene we are at now, around a couple of miles from

:04:19. > :04:24.But just up that street, it was over the two suspects.

:04:25. > :04:28.After a car chase through the city, they died here in a gun battle,

:04:29. > :04:35.I don't know who was shooting who first but they were both

:04:36. > :04:49.We work in the building and we hid in the back

:04:50. > :04:52.Syed Farook was a 28-year-old American.

:04:53. > :04:54.On an old dating profile he called himself a good Muslim looking

:04:55. > :04:57.for a girl who liked snowboarding and would wear a hijab.

:04:58. > :05:08.The FBI are asking the same question,

:05:09. > :05:14.scouring the couple's home for explosives.

:05:15. > :05:17.Terrorism is a possibility they say but so too is a workplace

:05:18. > :05:29.Either way, the country he leads has by one count assume that more than

:05:30. > :05:33.-- Either way, the country he leads has by one count seen more than

:05:34. > :05:38.We are going to have to search ourselves as a society to make sure

:05:39. > :05:41.we can take basic steps that would make it harder, not impossible

:05:42. > :05:43.but harder for individuals to get access to weapons.

:05:44. > :05:48.This tense and grieving city is still short of answers.

:05:49. > :05:51.Why did a mild-mannered man and his wife spark all of this, leaving

:05:52. > :06:05.Our correspondent Laura Trevelyan is in San Bernardino.

:06:06. > :06:11.And what other details that came out of the press conference that the

:06:12. > :06:20.police chief gave to journalists in the last hour was the huge amount of

:06:21. > :06:25.weapons these people possessed. Yes, many details are coming out of

:06:26. > :06:29.that press conference, not least now that there are a total of 21 people

:06:30. > :06:35.were wounded after the shooting rampage. 14 people killed. At the

:06:36. > :06:42.home of the suspects, police discovered 12 pipe bombs and 3000

:06:43. > :06:49.rounds of ammunition and they discovered the tools for making

:06:50. > :06:55.explosive devices. In addition, at the scene where I am now where the

:06:56. > :06:59.shooting took place yesterday at this community centre for disabled

:07:00. > :07:09.people, the authorities found in the car belonging to the suspects 1600

:07:10. > :07:14.rounds. That is an extraordinary amount of ammunition. And more

:07:15. > :07:20.details about the explosive device found in the centre. The authorities

:07:21. > :07:25.described it as being one pipe bomb combined of three which was being

:07:26. > :07:29.operated by some kind of remote control car device which apparently

:07:30. > :07:35.had failed to detonate. So the level of preplanning which had gone into

:07:36. > :07:38.this attack is shown by the sheer range of ammunition and explosives

:07:39. > :07:44.discovered since the shooting happened. Staggering. One detail

:07:45. > :07:49.which remains a mystery is the happened. Staggering. One detail

:07:50. > :07:57.motive. Yes, law enforcement officials are saying little about

:07:58. > :08:00.that in the past hour. The leader FBI official said it would be

:08:01. > :08:08.irresponsible and premature to call this terrorism. They do not have the

:08:09. > :08:13.motive still, said the weed or lease office. This is now an FBI

:08:14. > :08:17.investigation which suggests authorities want to explore the

:08:18. > :08:23.possibility this is terrorism. At the press conference, the officials

:08:24. > :08:26.were asked if the male suspect went abroad and was radicalised and they

:08:27. > :08:31.said they were looking into it. He said he came back into the US in

:08:32. > :08:39.July 2014, having visited Pakistan among other countries. But still no

:08:40. > :08:42.more answers and it could be a long time until there are definitive

:08:43. > :08:47.answers and in the meantime this community is grieving for those who

:08:48. > :08:53.died. We are told that later this afternoon the names of the dead will

:08:54. > :08:54.begin to be released. This has issue of gun control back into the

:08:55. > :08:57.spotlight. Thanks. The American Defence Secretary has

:08:58. > :08:59.announced that all US military The historic move comes

:09:00. > :09:04.after several years of study, and plans to wipe away generations

:09:05. > :09:07.of limits on how and where women Women will now be able to contribute

:09:08. > :09:16.to our mission They will be allowed to drive tanks,

:09:17. > :09:21.fire mortars, and lead infantry They will be able to serve as

:09:22. > :09:31.Army Rangers and Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Marine Corps infantry,

:09:32. > :09:33.Air Force para jumpers and everything else that was

:09:34. > :09:36.previously open only to men. Even more importantly,

:09:37. > :09:38.our military will be better able to harness the skills and perspectives

:09:39. > :09:50.that talented women have to offer. "No exceptions" was the

:09:51. > :09:52.recommendation of the secretary of the Army, the secretary of the Air

:09:53. > :09:56.Force and the secretary of the Navy, as well as the chief of staff of

:09:57. > :10:00.the Army, chief of staff of the Air Force and Chief of Naval Operations

:10:01. > :10:02.and the commander of Our correspondent Barbara

:10:03. > :10:15.Plett-Usher is in Washington. It opens up more than 200,000

:10:16. > :10:19.positions to women which were formally closed. The secretary of

:10:20. > :10:24.defence listed some of the things they will now be able to do. At the

:10:25. > :10:28.same time, this has been happening gradually over quite a long time,

:10:29. > :10:33.especially over the past three was, because in January 20 13th the army

:10:34. > :10:35.lifted its ban on the final restriction on women serving in

:10:36. > :10:41.direct combat ground rules. But then restriction on women serving in

:10:42. > :10:45.the leaders of different military services studied how this would work

:10:46. > :10:52.and to ask for and argue for those exceptions. Only the Marine Corps

:10:53. > :10:57.asked for partial exceptions. The secretary of defence said that

:10:58. > :11:00.because it is a joint force he had decided to make the decision across

:11:01. > :11:06.all the forces and that is because mainly the US military had to draw

:11:07. > :11:13.from the broadest pool of talent and couldn't afford to cut off 50% of

:11:14. > :11:18.the population. He says it also reflects what has been happening

:11:19. > :11:22.during the Iraq war, women fighting in fighter jets, submarines, and

:11:23. > :11:28.paying with their lives, killed and wounded. Now they will be able to

:11:29. > :11:29.officially apply for these roles which have been closed for them

:11:30. > :11:30.before. The Paralympic athlete Oscar

:11:31. > :11:32.Pistorius has been found guilty of murder after an Appeal Court

:11:33. > :11:35.judge in South Africa overturned The athlete killed

:11:36. > :11:39.his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp The judge said mistakes had been

:11:40. > :11:44.made in the first trial and that Pistorius must have known

:11:45. > :11:46.that he would kill someone when he repeatedly shot through

:11:47. > :11:52.a toilet door. He could now face a minimum

:11:53. > :11:54.of 15 years in prison From Johannesburg Nomsa Maseko

:11:55. > :12:03.reports. It is nearly three years since

:12:04. > :12:05.Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead Today, the long wait

:12:06. > :12:11.for her family was finally over. The accused's conviction and

:12:12. > :12:14.sentence on count one was set aside Guilty of murder with the accused

:12:15. > :12:20.having had criminal intent As they anxiously gathered

:12:21. > :12:30.in the courtroom, one of the prosecution lawyers

:12:31. > :12:32.hugged Reeva's mother. At least we have the truth now

:12:33. > :12:36.and the right decision and the right judgment

:12:37. > :12:42.and it is not up to me to say... They were South Africa's

:12:43. > :12:47.glamorous couple. But in the early hours

:12:48. > :12:53.of Valentine's Day 2013, she was killed in his bathroom

:12:54. > :12:56.when he fired four high-calibre Pistorius denied intentionally

:12:57. > :13:01.shooting his girlfriend, saying he believed he was shooting

:13:02. > :13:04.at an intruder in self defence. The prosecution however argued that

:13:05. > :13:07.he shot her in a fit of rage, The Supreme Court today said that

:13:08. > :13:14.the athlete should have foreseen the consequences of his actions

:13:15. > :13:17.when he opened fire, regardless By shooting through

:13:18. > :13:24.a locked toilet door, the judge concluded he must have known that he

:13:25. > :13:26.was going to kill someone. The judge also found there were

:13:27. > :13:31.fundamental errors in how the trial judge interpreted the law

:13:32. > :13:34.when she convicted Pistorius on a lesser charge of manslaughter, for

:13:35. > :13:45.which he spent a year in prison. Oscar Pistorius will remain here in

:13:46. > :13:48.his uncle's home on house arrest. Now branded a murderer

:13:49. > :13:51.by the Supreme Court of appeal, the disgraced athlete will wait until

:13:52. > :13:53.next year for resentencing to find It is unlikely that he will be

:13:54. > :14:00.able to appeal today's verdict. He now faces

:14:01. > :14:12.a possible 15-year jail term. British warplanes have carried out

:14:13. > :14:15.their first air strikes in Syria Almost immediately after the UK

:14:16. > :14:19.parliament approved military action, four Tornado jets took off from

:14:20. > :14:25.RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. The warplanes targeted

:14:26. > :14:28.the Omar oil field in eastern Syria, Jonathan Beale reports from

:14:29. > :14:50.RAF Akrotiri: This evening the reinforcements

:14:51. > :14:53.arrived at RAF Akrotiri. Another eight jets.

:14:54. > :14:55.This signals the rules have now changed, the border between Iraq

:14:56. > :15:05.Last night, within an hour of MPs voting yes,

:15:06. > :15:14.a pair of Tornadoes prepared for the first British air strikes in

:15:15. > :15:16.Syria, loaded with 500lb bombs, it was a carefully choreographed

:15:17. > :15:20.This is the second pair of tornadoes to leave tonight.

:15:21. > :15:24.After that Commons vote authorised military action in Syria.

:15:25. > :15:26.We have not been told the destination of these aircraft,

:15:27. > :15:33.but we understand they will be flying over Syria

:15:34. > :15:40.Their destination was the Omar oilfields, a source of funding

:15:41. > :15:43.It was not that long before they returned.

:15:44. > :15:49.The MoD said it was a successful mission.

:15:50. > :15:52.This is the first pair of RAF Tornadoes, they have been flying

:15:53. > :16:01.They went with three Paveway bombs and it looks like they've fired

:16:02. > :16:07.I think as the initial operation, firstly it is a piece

:16:08. > :16:13.of infrastructure and you can pre-plan it and

:16:14. > :16:17.of course you would want a fairly big bang after a parliamentary vote.

:16:18. > :16:19.There is low risk from the perspective of the pilots,

:16:20. > :16:21.high gain from the perspective of the politicians.

:16:22. > :16:27.These targets are part of a wider coalition strategy.

:16:28. > :16:29.Cockpit videos released by the Pentagon shows US warplanes

:16:30. > :16:31.hitting similar oil installations as well as tankers.

:16:32. > :16:34.It is one of the main sources of income for the extremists.

:16:35. > :16:38.But the Prime Minister admits it will take more to defeat IS.

:16:39. > :16:42.We will need to be patient and persistent, this will take time,

:16:43. > :16:45.it is complex and difficult what we are asking our

:16:46. > :16:48.pilots to do, our thoughts should be with them and their families as they

:16:49. > :16:54.These pilots will not be home by Christmas.

:16:55. > :16:55.This bombing campaign could take years.

:16:56. > :17:08.It will need more than warplanes to defeat IS.

:17:09. > :17:11.Should scientists be allowed to do research which alters the DNA

:17:12. > :17:14.It's a question being discussed by hundreds of scientists

:17:15. > :17:17.from 20 countries in Washington at a conference on what's known

:17:18. > :17:32.Our Medical Correspondent Fergus Walsh reports from the conference.

:17:33. > :17:39.From the discovery of DNA structure by Crick and Watson, to the dawn of

:17:40. > :17:44.IVF with the birth of Louise Brown, to the decoding of the human genome,

:17:45. > :17:47.decades of progress in human biology means scientists can now alter the

:17:48. > :17:53.very DNA that parents pass on to their children. Gene editing is

:17:54. > :18:00.cheap, simple and accessible to scientists anywhere in the world. It

:18:01. > :18:05.is like a molecular sat nav. It stands our DNA, reading the cold,

:18:06. > :18:10.looking for the error. Then it uses molecular scissors to slip through

:18:11. > :18:15.of strands, switching off a faulty gene or enabling a healthy copy to

:18:16. > :18:19.be inserted. Both techniques have the potential to treat or even cure

:18:20. > :18:26.genetic diseases. If gene editing was done in IVF embryos, that DNA

:18:27. > :18:33.change would pass down all subsequent generations. In theory,

:18:34. > :18:38.it could be used to prevent inherited conditions like cystic

:18:39. > :18:43.fibrosis or Huntington's disease. Let your from three people, a

:18:44. > :18:54.patient, ethicist tests, all with strong views. -- and scientist. I

:18:55. > :19:01.will lose the ability to control my body. Charles carries the genetics

:19:02. > :19:07.for Huntington's disease. It killed his father. His older brother now

:19:08. > :19:14.needs 24-hour care. He says gene editing offers real hope. It is too

:19:15. > :19:18.late for me but for generations to come this offers the priceless

:19:19. > :19:23.possibility of putting an end to a disease which affects generation

:19:24. > :19:26.after generation. But this ethicist argues it would be wrong to ever

:19:27. > :19:32.allow gene edited the children to be born. It is too risky, we do not

:19:33. > :19:37.need it, there are other ways to have healthy children, and it would

:19:38. > :19:42.open the door possibly to a world of genetic haves and have-nots. We do

:19:43. > :19:53.not need more inequality and discrimination. This man wants

:19:54. > :19:59.scientists to be allowed to edit genes in embryos, but at this stage

:20:00. > :20:06.only in a dish. He says cure is still years off. The ability to

:20:07. > :20:11.manipulate specific genes and test what effect that has an cell or

:20:12. > :20:15.tissue behaviour or organ behaviour, is really going to open up new

:20:16. > :20:21.avenues of research and understanding how our bodies work.

:20:22. > :20:26.Designer humans may be a long way off but these are designer dogs.

:20:27. > :20:34.Chinese scientists edited versions as embryos and the result is they

:20:35. > :20:39.have bigger muscles than other dogs. Modifying DNA raises profound

:20:40. > :20:40.questions which scientists and society are only just beginning to

:20:41. > :20:46.face. Now, a long time ago, in

:20:47. > :20:49.a galaxy far, far away, two unknown 23-year-olds were cast in leading

:20:50. > :20:52.roles in the new Star Wars film. The eagerly anticipated movie,

:20:53. > :20:54.called The Force Awakens, features Our entertainment correspondent

:20:55. > :21:03.Lizo Mzimba met them. There are stories

:21:04. > :21:05.about what happened. The saga is part

:21:06. > :21:06.of cinema mythology. For two relative unknowns, lead

:21:07. > :21:25.roles that could perhaps propel So

:21:26. > :21:30.for a few months I honestly didn't know whether I was coming or going,

:21:31. > :21:33.whether I was going to lose the job, and then being surrounded by people

:21:34. > :21:36.who really make you feel loved. I don't get recognised as much

:21:37. > :21:41.as people make out to be for now, but then that is going to change

:21:42. > :21:44.in a few weeks, but, yeah, It's just something that is

:21:45. > :21:48.going to happen regardless. Daisy Ridley was making small

:21:49. > :21:51.appearances in TV dramas and working in a pub

:21:52. > :21:53.when she first started auditioning for a part which could be career

:21:54. > :21:56.defining in all sorts of ways. Do you give much thought to

:21:57. > :21:59.the fact that it's not a guarantee I think me and Rey are similar in

:22:00. > :22:07.that, you know, she's just hoping for a better life, and I've been

:22:08. > :22:10.so lucky with what happened before. When I did Casualty,

:22:11. > :22:13.that was thrilling to me, John Boyega already has

:22:14. > :22:19.a few smaller films under his belt. Filming this at Pinewood,

:22:20. > :22:21.just outside London, alongside stars from the original

:22:22. > :22:26.trilogy helped him feel at home. The funny thing about it is being

:22:27. > :22:28.on this kind of like historical Hollywood set and

:22:29. > :22:34.then, you know, walking downstairs and seeing the crew talk about

:22:35. > :22:38.the latest episode of EastEnders. And as opening day approaches,

:22:39. > :22:48.how nervous do you feel? I'm so used to

:22:49. > :22:51.your voice talking about films, this is probably the most serious I've

:22:52. > :22:54.ever thought, oh, it is coming out. Yeah, I guess it is daunting but I

:22:55. > :23:10.just mainly want people to think I As football's world governing body,

:23:11. > :23:12.Fifa, unveils plans aimed at cleaning up

:23:13. > :23:15.the way it is run, two more senior Fifa's executive committee has

:23:16. > :23:21.adopted reforms including restricting its president

:23:22. > :23:24.to a maximum of 12 years at the top and tighter integrity

:23:25. > :23:27.checks on senior officials. But what timing -

:23:28. > :23:32.just a couple of hours earlier, Swiss authorities raided a hotel

:23:33. > :23:34.in Zurich and detained two Fifa vice-presidents as part of

:23:35. > :23:37.an ongoing bribery investigation. The BBC's Sports Editor Dan Roan,

:23:38. > :23:54.gave me more details. These gentlemen are not household
