:01:22. > :01:23.One Hollywood actor, one violent drugs lord and one
:01:24. > :01:26.controversial interview that has got people talking.
:01:27. > :01:31.Sean Penn went to Mexico to meet El Chapo in October in a hideout,
:01:32. > :01:34.and Mexico's most wanted criminal offered up his opinion on his life
:01:35. > :01:42.He was asked if he tried to avoid violence or only use it
:01:43. > :02:05.Of course, he is the leader of a cartel, a violent and powerful
:02:06. > :02:09.drugs gang linked to thousands of murders, kidnappings
:02:10. > :02:13.and money-laundering in Mexico and the United States.
:02:14. > :02:17.Both men are globally recognised, but it was El Chapo's attempts
:02:18. > :02:21.to dabble in the movie business himself that led
:02:22. > :02:28.They tracked his contact with producers and actors.

:02:52. > :02:55.One was made before his escape by the US last year and one
:02:56. > :03:01.Both were approved with the Mexican government in line with the treaty
:03:02. > :03:07.No timescale was given, but experts say it could take months.
:03:08. > :03:11.Extradition is not a foregone conclusion, but with every

:03:15. > :03:17.authorities will be keen to put a lid on El Chapo's escapades
:03:18. > :03:27.On the one hand quite a coup to interview a fugitive drug lord.
:03:28. > :03:30.But Rolling Stone has also received severe criticism including
:03:31. > :03:33.from the White House, particularly for admitting
:03:34. > :03:37.that the article was submitted to El Chapo
:03:38. > :03:43.Well earlier, I spoke to the founder of Rolling Stone about how
:03:44. > :03:55.He had the story so he was the one to do it.
:03:56. > :04:02.He's an accomplished writer so had the skills and the story.
:04:03. > :04:13.We understand the magazine gave El Chapo Ed torial signoff so once
:04:14. > :04:17.it was finished, he got to see the version and to say
:04:18. > :04:23.Why did you decide to give him that right?
:04:24. > :04:26.This is a deal that Sean worked out with El Chapo,
:04:27. > :04:34.We were willing to go along with it and nothing came of it,
:04:35. > :04:53.Our reporter Katie Watson joins us now from Mexico City. The fact he
:04:54. > :04:56.was given editorial signoff has caused a huge amount of controversy,
:04:57. > :05:01.hasn't it, particularly in the States? That is right. On social
:05:02. > :05:06.media as well. You have journalists saying this is the death of
:05:07. > :05:12.journalism, the fact that you give a notorious drug Lord editorial
:05:13. > :05:15.signoff. On the other hand, if this powerful and feared criminal isn't
:05:16. > :05:18.happy with the story, I guess the consequences, who knows what they
:05:19. > :05:22.could be, so that was probably a balance they were trying to strike.
:05:23. > :05:26.Nevertheless, yes, this story has caused controversy in the United
:05:27. > :05:31.States, controversy here as well. You've got to remember, this is a
:05:32. > :05:35.man who is the head of the cartel, one of the most notorious in the
:05:36. > :05:38.world, and responsible for ultimately thousands of deaths in
:05:39. > :05:43.his drug trafficking activities, despite the fact that he denies it
:05:44. > :05:46.and says he isn't a violent man. That needs to be taken into
:05:47. > :05:54.consideration of course. He's the most wanted man in Mexico. Yet he
:05:55. > :05:59.also very purposefully cultivated this Robin Hood-esque figure didn't
:06:00. > :06:03.he within Mexico, quite a compelling character. So what has been the
:06:04. > :06:07.reaction in Mexico to his recapture and of course this interview? Well,
:06:08. > :06:12.I think the elements of his capture and now this interview with Sean
:06:13. > :06:16.Penn are elements of a movie he wanted to make on himself anyway,
:06:17. > :06:19.not that he'll be involved in it at the moment because he's behind bars,
:06:20. > :06:26.but at the end of the day, people here are incredulous that this is a
:06:27. > :06:30.story that keeps on going. Again, when he escaped, there was ridicule
:06:31. > :06:36.of the government that it was almost so bad that it was funny. Now the
:06:37. > :06:41.fact that he is behind bars, of course, the authorities are glad he
:06:42. > :06:44.is there, but as you talked about this Robin Hood figure, he didn't so
:06:45. > :06:50.much cultivate that, it was a following he got because he provides
:06:51. > :06:56.jobs and people grow marijuana for people who feel that's the only
:06:57. > :06:59.option, that is something he said, if you disagree, you can, but
:07:00. > :07:03.ultimately he provides for a lot of families and the authorities have to
:07:04. > :07:07.battle with that issue. As you mentioned, this is not the first
:07:08. > :07:11.time he had escaped from prison and the details of the escapes are
:07:12. > :07:17.extraordinary. What precautions are being done this time to make sure he
:07:18. > :07:21.doesn't manage to escape? National Security Commission said today
:07:22. > :07:25.they'd been into the prison he's now in and which he escaped from and
:07:26. > :07:29.they did a visit that took around four hours. They looked at security
:07:30. > :07:34.cameras, the perimeter of the prison, the control centre and they
:07:35. > :07:40.put in place a rigorous supervision system of people coming in,
:07:41. > :07:43.visitors. They say the standard is up to international standards and
:07:44. > :07:50.they're keen to emphasise that they are capable of looking after El
:07:51. > :07:56.Chapo and keeping him behind bars this time. There is this extradition
:07:57. > :08:00.treaty between the US and Mexico. Mexico will be starting the process.
:08:01. > :08:04.It's still not a foregone conclusion and it's not a definite yes, but
:08:05. > :08:09.nevertheless that is a process that will now be in place.
:08:10. > :08:12.Thousands of people in Hong Kong have taken to the streets to protest
:08:13. > :08:16.against the disappearances of five people who worked for a publishing
:08:17. > :08:20.company known for its books that are critical of the Chinese government.
:08:21. > :08:23.Demonstrators marched to the office of Beijing's representative in Hong
:08:24. > :08:41.They came in numbers demanding answers, the slogans saying all,
:08:42. > :08:46.protest against political abduction. I will say that it's a turning point
:08:47. > :08:56.for suppression of our freedom because, how can a person in Hong
:08:57. > :08:59.Kong exercise our right now, you know, China detained for
:09:00. > :09:03.investigation. This is a milestone for suppression. A six-thousand
:09:04. > :09:08.strong crowd took over the streets marching to the office of Beijing's
:09:09. > :09:13.representative in Hong Kong. Since October, one by one, five men who
:09:14. > :09:19.worked at a small book shop and publisher have disappeared. The
:09:20. > :09:23.latest is British citizen, Paul Lee. The topics covered in the book store
:09:24. > :09:27.include political corruption, power struggles, even the love affairs of
:09:28. > :09:32.China's top leaders, all of which are banned from being published in
:09:33. > :09:38.mainland China. It's alarmed activists who have
:09:39. > :09:42.deepening suspicions that free expression is being squeezed in Hong
:09:43. > :09:48.Kong. The organisers believe the men were abducted to the mainland by
:09:49. > :09:52.Chinese security agents. It's Hong Kong's freedom of publishing but
:09:53. > :09:57.China's stepped in to intervene in Hong Kong's freedom of publishing
:09:58. > :10:04.and also to violate the basic law and the one country, two systems
:10:05. > :10:08.commitment. Under the one country-two systems principle, Hong
:10:09. > :10:12.Kong is supposed to enjoy high degrees of autonomy from China since
:10:13. > :10:15.it took over from Britain. Hong Kong authorities say they're conducting a
:10:16. > :10:19.thorough investigation and fully understand the concerns of the
:10:20. > :10:24.community that everyone should abide by the law. So far, there's been no
:10:25. > :10:31.official comment from the Chinese government on Mr Lee's case.
:10:32. > :10:35.A US B-52 bomber has flown a low-level flight over South Korea.
:10:36. > :10:38.The show of force was in response to North Korea's nuclear
:10:39. > :10:53.The B-52 is a fortress enforcing America's will far beyond its
