:00:00. > :00:08.This is BBC World News with me, Alpa Patel.

:00:09. > :00:10.Today: Our top story - South Africa's president addresses

:00:11. > :00:14.the nation over the latest controversy to embroil him.

:00:15. > :00:17.Jacob Zuma ignores calls for his resignation following a court ruling

:00:18. > :00:30.I never knowingly or deliberately set out to violate the constitution.

:00:31. > :00:35.A new global study reveals how a dramatic rise in obesity

:00:36. > :00:40.you is weighing heavy on public health.

:00:41. > :00:44.Also coming up: A jury gives its verdict over alleged plans

:00:45. > :00:52.for a terror attack against American forces based in the UK.

:00:53. > :00:54.Planned before his death - the tribute concert David Bowie

:00:55. > :01:16.Stars celebrate his life, and love, of New York.

:01:17. > :01:19.South African President Jacob Zuma says he'll abide by the ruling

:01:20. > :01:21.of the country's highest court that he should pay back some

:01:22. > :01:25.of the public money spent on his private home.

:01:26. > :01:29.24 hours ago the highest court in the country ruled he'd failed

:01:30. > :01:32.to uphold the constitution by ignoring the findings

:01:33. > :01:33.by an official anti-corruption watchdog.

:01:34. > :01:40.In the last hour, President Zuma apologised to the nation

:01:41. > :01:45.I respect the judgment and will abide by it.

:01:46. > :01:57.I have consistently stated that I would pay

:01:58. > :02:03.an amount towards the security upgrades, once this has been

:02:04. > :02:21.really are expecting to speak to our correspondent in the next few

:02:22. > :02:24.moments. We hope will happen at Stoney shortly.

:02:25. > :02:26.There are now more adults in the world classified as obese

:02:27. > :02:28.than underweight, according to a major new study.

:02:29. > :02:31.The research looked at almost 20 million adults from 1975 to 2014.

:02:32. > :02:34.It found obesity in men has tripled to nearly 11% overall -

:02:35. > :02:37.and more than doubled in women to nearly 15%.

:02:38. > :02:40.And as our Health Editor Hugh Pym reports, the problem is predicted

:02:41. > :02:56.This could be one part of winning the battle of the bulge and the

:02:57. > :03:02.struggle to control weight and improve health. Loretta is a

:03:03. > :03:07.personal trainer working with those who might feel inhibited going to a

:03:08. > :03:13.gym. She had run away its challenges and knows about the obstacles in the

:03:14. > :03:19.way. I am back now but I was much bigger and went to a of classes and

:03:20. > :03:23.just couldn't keep up, I injured myself, I had a bad experience and

:03:24. > :03:28.was singled out and felt uncomfortable. My classes are

:03:29. > :03:33.hopefully for everyone. The report illustrates the increasing global

:03:34. > :03:45.obesity. In 1970 75p .2% of men were obese. 6.4% of women were obese in

:03:46. > :03:49.1975 and nearly 15% by 2014. As for the UK, by 2025 it is predicted to

:03:50. > :03:57.have the highest obesity levels what women in Europe.

:03:58. > :04:01.Exercise and personal responsibility clearly have an important part to

:04:02. > :04:04.play in tackling the weight issue. There is an increasing focus on the

:04:05. > :04:11.role of food and drink companies and if they should be doing more to help

:04:12. > :04:15.consumers cut the calories. The Chancellor announced a sugar tax

:04:16. > :04:18.and fizzy drinks in the budget and Government action to curb

:04:19. > :04:22.supermarket price promotions is expected. Some experts say

:04:23. > :04:26.manufacturers should be pushed in the right direction. It's what I got

:04:27. > :04:31.lazy capitalism. The food industry is doing the easiest thing to try

:04:32. > :04:35.and make money. Industry must be made to work harder. We need

:04:36. > :04:42.policies and programmes to level the playing field. Some said it was down

:04:43. > :04:45.to all of us. It is that the cup but people must make a change

:04:46. > :04:51.themselves. It can always be the Government. If you grew up eating

:04:52. > :04:56.crisps and all the rest of it it will be difficult to get out of that

:04:57. > :05:00.circle. While many are working to control

:05:01. > :05:02.their weight there is a lot more heavy lifting needed to avoid the

:05:03. > :05:07.protected obesity epidemic. Mexico is one country struggling

:05:08. > :05:09.with this obesity epidemic, with more than half the residents

:05:10. > :05:11.in it's capital city Arantxa Colchero is a health

:05:12. > :05:15.economist at Mexico's National She recently published a study

:05:16. > :05:23.looking at how a tax She joins me from the

:05:24. > :05:35.city of Cuernavaca. Why ever such high rates of obesity

:05:36. > :05:47.and diabetes in Mexico? -- why are they? In Mexico the prevalence of

:05:48. > :05:52.obesity is 70%. And 30% among children. The prevalence of diabetes

:05:53. > :06:00.is 14% and the problem is only 70% are diagnosed. Obesity is increasing

:06:01. > :06:11.in the world. The problem is very high in Mexico and for several

:06:12. > :06:18.reasons. One of them is the world health organisation recommends added

:06:19. > :06:28.sugars should not be more than 10% of total energy intake. In Mexico on

:06:29. > :06:35.average 12.5% of added sugars are in the total energy intake. Consumption

:06:36. > :06:48.of sugar sweetened beverages is very high. That represents a lock, 70% of

:06:49. > :06:52.these added sugars. Is it just that problem or is it

:06:53. > :07:04.also unhealthy food and a lack of exercise? Yes, I think obesity has

:07:05. > :07:12.many factors. There is a lot of causes around obesity, but we have

:07:13. > :07:15.identified that consumption of sugar sugar sweetened beverages is very

:07:16. > :07:26.high. Mexico was the highest consumer in world's but now it is

:07:27. > :07:34.chilly. Mexico is now second. 12% of total energy intake on average among

:07:35. > :07:41.Mexicans is from added sugars. From that, 70% is sugar sweetened

:07:42. > :07:44.beverages. It's not the only cause but it has contributed. They you

:07:45. > :08:00.know how much this is costing Mexico's economy? -- do you know?

:08:01. > :08:08.Obesity in general, has a very high costs and that is a huge problem

:08:09. > :08:14.because people are not aware of the consequences of eating or drinking

:08:15. > :08:25.unhealthy food. Because they are not aware they do it and that causes a

:08:26. > :08:34.lot of problems, one of them is very high direct cost related to health

:08:35. > :08:37.expenditure. Thank you very much for joining us.

:08:38. > :08:39.An Islamist extremist has been found guilty of planning an attack

:08:40. > :08:41.against American forces based in Britain.

:08:42. > :08:44.Junead Khan was a delivery driver whose route took him past RAF

:08:45. > :08:53.Police said he'd planned to stage a car crash and to attack

:08:54. > :09:08.The black flag of so-called Islamic state hanging behind him in his

:09:09. > :09:13.bedroom. This is Junead Khan who was planning the first attack on US

:09:14. > :09:20.servicemen in the UK and was helped and advised by a IS recruiter in

:09:21. > :09:24.Syria. His targets were American airbases in East Anglia including

:09:25. > :09:29.RAF Lakenheath. His plan was to slaughter a US airman and an attack

:09:30. > :09:35.similar to the one on Route Lee Rigby. His weapon was that life he

:09:36. > :09:39.tried to buy what you get a home-made bomb. His intention was to

:09:40. > :09:45.target a US military officer by staging a car crash. He was then

:09:46. > :09:50.going to use a knife to attack that officer, he also researched

:09:51. > :09:55.extensively and got instructions on how to make a bomb. As Junead Khan

:09:56. > :10:03.makers plans last summer his friend the time, seen here on the left, was

:10:04. > :10:07.killed by the Americans in Syria. IS leader and plan of attack on the

:10:08. > :10:11.west he was in a vehicle destroyed by a drone. This seems to have

:10:12. > :10:16.increased Junead Khan's determination. When he was arrested

:10:17. > :10:24.last July his iPhone contained the key evidence including an online

:10:25. > :10:30.conversation what I can promise IS recruiter. Using encrypted social

:10:31. > :10:35.media at, he advised Junead Khan, it is best to have at least pipe bombs

:10:36. > :10:38.pressure to drop bombs in case something happens so you can do,

:10:39. > :10:58.suicide bomb. When Junead Khan announced his

:10:59. > :11:05.intention to target US servicemen and airbases in Britain, his conduct

:11:06. > :11:09.in Syria offered to help. Just over one week later Junead Khan was

:11:10. > :11:14.arrested in six weeks after that, his contact in Syria was killed by

:11:15. > :11:22.an American drone strike, the plot abruptly terminated. He had been one

:11:23. > :11:29.of IS most prolific propagandists which is why the Americans regarded

:11:30. > :11:33.him as so dangerous. Unlike a single fighter with an AK-47 on the ground,

:11:34. > :11:40.he had the potential through his all my efforts to reach across the ocean

:11:41. > :11:44.and to motivate radicalise and inspire violence in foreign

:11:45. > :11:50.countries around the world. With two of his IS contact dead from drone

:11:51. > :11:53.strikes, Junead Khan now faces a long prison sentence for his part in

:11:54. > :11:59.plotting to kill US servicemen based in Britain.

:12:00. > :12:01.Now a look at some of the days other news:

:12:02. > :12:05.say a woman has died of ebola, months after the epidemic

:12:06. > :12:10.The 30-year-old died in hospital in the capital Monrovia.

:12:11. > :12:12.Liberia was declared free of ebola in January, but there have been

:12:13. > :12:22.several small flare-ups in the region.

:12:23. > :12:28.Donald Trump is held talks with Republican party leaders are

:12:29. > :12:32.damaging row over his loyalty. His meeting at the Republican National

:12:33. > :12:37.committee lasted for 30 minutes but few details were revealed. Earlier

:12:38. > :12:40.this week he accused the committee of treating him unfairly. After

:12:41. > :12:43.today he tweeted the meeting was a very nice.

:12:44. > :12:48.The Indonesian government has threatened to blacklist

:12:49. > :12:49.Leonardo DiCaprio after the Oscar-winning actor made

:12:50. > :12:51.critical statements about the country's palm oil

:12:52. > :12:53.industry during a visit.On social media, the American actor posted

:12:54. > :12:59.about the threat to the Le-ooser national park in Aceh.

:13:00. > :13:02.A top official said if the comments are judged as "incitement",

:13:03. > :13:18.Let's return to our main story and said that's president has been

:13:19. > :13:23.addressing the nation over the controversy of his home. We can join

:13:24. > :13:29.our correspondent from Johannesburg. The president has apologised, but he

:13:30. > :13:38.says he will repay some of the money but we don't know how much? Indeed,

:13:39. > :13:42.President Jacob Zuma came out tonight and addressed the nation

:13:43. > :13:48.live on television, a rare event. He said he apologises for the issue

:13:49. > :13:55.that has dragged on longer than it should have. He also said he'd never

:13:56. > :14:01.knowingly or deliberately tried to subvert the constitution. With that,

:14:02. > :14:06.that was President Zuma clinging to power for a few more years. The

:14:07. > :14:12.African National Congress, his party, is now holding a briefing and

:14:13. > :14:17.they say they welcome the President's explanation. He said he

:14:18. > :14:22.also welcomes the judgment of the Constitutional Court which was

:14:23. > :14:26.issued yesterday which was pretty damning against him. It is

:14:27. > :14:30.interesting, because it is the highest court that found he had

:14:31. > :14:38.broken the Constitution. How is he going to rule with any authority

:14:39. > :14:46.now? Here is a situation. The electoral system is proportional

:14:47. > :14:53.representation. People vote for the party to come into power, they don't

:14:54. > :14:59.vote for the individual. Jacob Zuma is set to Parliament by the African

:15:00. > :15:01.National Congress, which he is the president of, and then they elect

:15:02. > :15:08.him to beat the president of the company. If they do not recall

:15:09. > :15:14.President Zuma from his position that he stays exactly where he is.

:15:15. > :15:19.Tonight it is clear the African National Congress stands by him, but

:15:20. > :15:23.make no mistake, they are usually divided. There are those who want

:15:24. > :15:26.President Zuma to resign immediately and some of them are speaking

:15:27. > :15:31.publicly, and many others who want him to continue, who think this is

:15:32. > :15:35.just a political ploy to remove him from power. For now, thank you very

:15:36. > :15:49.much. Hopes of finding more survivors and

:15:50. > :15:53.collapsed flyover in Kolkata are fading. Police have opened

:15:54. > :16:02.proceedings against the company in charge of construction.

:16:03. > :16:04.The last of the rubble is being cleared, no more bodies

:16:05. > :16:09.There is some debris being removed and it has been insured there is no

:16:10. > :16:14.As for the possibility of survivors, that is no more in this area.

:16:15. > :16:18.I'm standing right in the middle of the crossroads where this

:16:19. > :16:24.Look at the scale of the structure that came crashing down.

:16:25. > :16:29.Remember, this is one of the busiest areas of one of the busiest cities

:16:30. > :16:34.in India and it happened at midday, one of the busiest times of day.

:16:35. > :16:37.As more twisted steel and shattered concrete is loaded onto trucks

:16:38. > :16:45.What people want to know is why what should have been a fairly

:16:46. > :16:50.straightforward construction project ended in such terrible disaster.

:16:51. > :16:59.Everyone is not ready to see the area.

:17:00. > :17:16.From 2009 the work has been going on.

:17:17. > :17:18.Now we don't know when it will be complete.

:17:19. > :17:21.With state elections just days away it has become a huge political

:17:22. > :17:23.issue, not just here in Bengal, but across India.

:17:24. > :17:26.People are asking why a construction company that had been blacklisted

:17:27. > :17:28.by other Indian states were still in charge.

:17:29. > :17:37.Was the long delayed project being rushed under pressure

:17:38. > :17:39.Meanwhile, what remains of the overpass reflects

:17:40. > :17:43.Two great arms of steel twisted and slumped, as if

:17:44. > :17:55.South Korea says North Korea has fired another ballistic missile

:17:56. > :18:02.off its east coast into the sea, just hours after U.S.

:18:03. > :18:04.President Obama and China's President Xi Jinping were agreeing

:18:05. > :18:06.to cooperate against any North Korean nuclear threat,

:18:07. > :18:08.at a nuclear security summit attended by world leaders

:18:09. > :18:13.The BBC's defence and diplomatic correspondent, Jonathan Marcus,

:18:14. > :18:27.In nuclear security talks going on, Korea showing it really is not happy

:18:28. > :18:33.about these talks and it will continue to do what it needs to do

:18:34. > :18:36.in order to defend itself? That is the message coming from all the

:18:37. > :18:40.North Korean diplomats. Yesterday the Americans were meeting with

:18:41. > :18:45.senior South Korean and Japanese leaders, also the Chinese president

:18:46. > :18:49.expressed concerns about North Korea and its nuclear programme, and we

:18:50. > :18:53.had a rare opportunity in London to hear from the knock against

:18:54. > :18:58.themselves, the ambassador to London. He came in and I was

:18:59. > :19:03.speaking to him. I put it to him many of his colleagues are talking

:19:04. > :19:06.about there being a situation of semi-war on the Korean peninsula and

:19:07. > :19:12.he wasn't backing away from that Andy at all. The situation in the

:19:13. > :19:25.Korean peninsular is a very serious, it is on the brink of nuclear war.

:19:26. > :19:27.As you said, I think it is at a state of semi-war, that is correct.

:19:28. > :19:29.Any time a walk and break
