:00:12. > :00:14.a despicable attack - President Obama condemns

:00:15. > :00:16.the killing of five Dallas police officers.

:00:17. > :00:19.25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson who was a member

:00:20. > :00:33.Police say he was angry over the recent killings of black

:00:34. > :00:38.He's now been blown up by a police bomb.

:00:39. > :00:46.The suspect said he was upset at White people. He stated he wanted to

:00:47. > :00:54.kill white people, especially white officers. Police have been searching

:00:55. > :00:55.his home here in a suburb of Dallas, and the army have confirmed he

:00:56. > :00:57.served with them in Afghanistan. Nato leaders formally approve

:00:58. > :01:00.the deployment of a force in the Baltic states and Poland

:01:01. > :01:03.designed to deter any Britain's Andy Murray makes it

:01:04. > :01:07.through to the Wimbledon final He'll face Canadian Milos Raonic,

:01:08. > :01:26.who knocked out Roger Federer. All eyes are on Sunday night. It

:01:27. > :01:27.will be the host nation France against Portugal in the final of

:01:28. > :01:42.Euro 2016. President Obama has described

:01:43. > :01:44.the shootings in Dallas which killed five police officers

:01:45. > :01:45.as "despicable". It happened during a peaceful

:01:46. > :01:51.protest against the shootings of two black men by police officers

:01:52. > :01:53.earlier in the week. The officers were shot

:01:54. > :01:56.at by at least one sniper The shootings happened

:01:57. > :02:02.in the downtown area of Dallas as a rally was making

:02:03. > :02:05.its way down Main Street, reaching a crossroads between this

:02:06. > :02:08.skyscraper on the right The main suspect has been

:02:09. > :02:15.named as Micah Johnson. Police say he was upset

:02:16. > :02:18.about the recent police shootings The US Army say Johnson had served

:02:19. > :02:27.as a Private First Class in the Army Reserve and was deployed

:02:28. > :02:40.to Afghanistan in 2013 to July 2014. Very also people have been deterred

:02:41. > :02:43.in connection with the shooting. -- three other people.

:02:44. > :02:46.It was the deadliest day for police in America

:02:47. > :02:47.since the September 11 attacks in 2001.

:02:48. > :02:50.Other large police forces in the United States have been

:02:51. > :02:52.Our North America Correspondent James Cook has

:02:53. > :02:55.been following events, and sent this report.

:02:56. > :02:58.In downtown Dallas, this is the moment a peaceful

:02:59. > :03:08.The crowd was demonstrating against police violence

:03:09. > :03:12.when one man apparently decided to seek his own bloody vengeance.

:03:13. > :03:18.There was panic as the crowd and the police tried to figure out

:03:19. > :03:28.It's a sniper from up here somewhere.

:03:29. > :03:33.And, as ever, in the America of 2016,

:03:34. > :03:40.the horror was documented, minute by minute.

:03:41. > :03:42.Michael Bautista was in the thick of it.

:03:43. > :03:46.They're shooting right now and there's an officer down.

:03:47. > :03:49.It's coming from the right over there from around these buildings.

:03:50. > :04:00.There had to have been five or six cops, they were

:04:01. > :04:05.Police poured into the area, running towards the danger,

:04:06. > :04:11.heavily armed but, at the same time, suddenly exposed and fragile.

:04:12. > :04:13.This footage seems to capture a gunman, on the street by now,

:04:14. > :04:18.murdering at point-blank range, in scenes that are too

:04:19. > :04:24.Eventually, after a shoot-out lasting several hours,

:04:25. > :04:28.police sent in a robot to blow up a suspect.

:04:29. > :04:35.We cornered one suspect and we tried to negotiate for several hours.

:04:36. > :04:37.Negotiations broke down, we had an exchange of

:04:38. > :04:46.We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot,

:04:47. > :04:51.for it to detonate where the suspect was.

:04:52. > :04:55.Police arrested and released two men and a woman, and the chief says

:04:56. > :04:59.the suspect who died had told negotiators he was working alone.

:05:00. > :05:04.He's been identified by US media as 25-year-old Micah Johnson -

:05:05. > :05:06.a former US Army reservist, seen here in pictures

:05:07. > :05:13.The suspect said he was upset at white people.

:05:14. > :05:16.The suspect stated he wanted to kill white people,

:05:17. > :05:22.And now the faces of the dead are beginning to emerge.

:05:23. > :05:26.Brent Thompson was 43 and had just got married.

:05:27. > :05:28.Patrick Zamarripa said he was addicted to the thrill

:05:29. > :05:33.His family said they were mourning a hero, remarks echoed

:05:34. > :05:39.Today is a wrenching reminder of the sacrifices

:05:40. > :05:46.We also know that when people are armed with powerful weapons,

:05:47. > :05:50.unfortunately, it makes attacks like these more deadly

:05:51. > :05:56.And, in the days ahead, we're going to have to consider

:05:57. > :06:02.Some of the police officers here have told me that they have

:06:03. > :06:05.friends who didn't make it last night.

:06:06. > :06:09.And yet they're out here in force again today,

:06:10. > :06:11.protecting a crime scene which sprawls for several blocks

:06:12. > :06:14.around the building here, where the shooting began.

:06:15. > :06:18.And across Texas, across the United States, they are praying.

:06:19. > :06:22.This was the deadliest attack on US law enforcement since 9/11.

:06:23. > :06:27.It reveals a country in turmoil, convulsed by controversy about guns,

:06:28. > :06:46.Let's cross to our correspondent Laura Bicker, who is in Dallas.

:06:47. > :06:51.There was originally some confusion over how many gunmen were involved

:06:52. > :06:57.in this attack, but all signs are now pointing to this suspect Micah

:06:58. > :07:01.Johnson. There has certainly been a bit of confusion. We heard from the

:07:02. > :07:06.Dallas police jeep on a couple of occasions, where he said suspects

:07:07. > :07:10.instead of suspect. But it now appears that certainly be cheap

:07:11. > :07:18.suspect is Micah Johnson, and we have seen pictures of him now in his

:07:19. > :07:22.Army uniform. -- certainly the chief suspect. He served in Afghanistan,

:07:23. > :07:27.the Army has confirmed that. Police have been searching his home here in

:07:28. > :07:33.a suburb, and mixed neighbourhood outside Dallas. This certainly was a

:07:34. > :07:38.very confusing picture for police. It was hours of stand-off where they

:07:39. > :07:42.negotiated with Mr Johnson. Certainly they came to the

:07:43. > :07:47.conclusion that the only way to end their stand-off was to send robot

:07:48. > :07:52.armed with an explosive. That has never been done by the police on US

:07:53. > :07:58.soil, so that is what they did, and the gunman was killed by that bomb.

:07:59. > :08:02.When it comes to the reaction here, both in Texas and right across the

:08:03. > :08:09.United States, the shock is now giving way to a call for

:08:10. > :08:13.unification, for an America that, James mentioned in his package, and

:08:14. > :08:19.America in 2016 that are facing across a very big divide, whether

:08:20. > :08:23.across the racial tensions or about guns or criminal justice. This is an

:08:24. > :08:28.Americano looking at one another, trying to figure out how to move

:08:29. > :08:33.forward. There has been calls for calm in light of what has happened,

:08:34. > :08:39.and also the Orlando shooting is not that long ago. Tensions must be

:08:40. > :08:44.quite high across the country. I have just come from Louisiana, where

:08:45. > :08:47.I was yesterday, where there were several protests at the death of

:08:48. > :08:52.Alton Sterling, who was shot by a white police officer. Certainly

:08:53. > :08:57.there are tensions were running high. The protest that broke out

:08:58. > :09:02.last night right across the United States, from Washington, DC to New

:09:03. > :09:08.York to hear, where peaceful. These were peaceful protests. However, it

:09:09. > :09:12.seems that one man decided perhaps that he would have his vengeance. Of

:09:13. > :09:18.course that is under investigation, but the police has said that he told

:09:19. > :09:22.negotiators he wanted to shoot white people, especially white police

:09:23. > :09:26.officers. You have heard from President Obama today, who has

:09:27. > :09:32.praised the work of police, who said it is no time for America to come

:09:33. > :09:39.together and pray and heal. -- it is now time. We have also heard from

:09:40. > :09:42.Loretta Lynch, who said it is time that the violence ends. Violence

:09:43. > :09:47.solves nothing. These are high-profile figures in America.

:09:48. > :09:51.They are urging people here to stay calm and try to let figures of

:09:52. > :09:53.authority come to some conclusion as to how they bring this issue

:09:54. > :10:14.forward. Thank you very much. The protest in Dallas overnight

:10:15. > :10:17.was mirrored in other cities across America, where there has been

:10:18. > :10:19.real anger over the shootings Our correspondent Nick Bryant

:10:20. > :10:23.is in Minnesota, where he reports This week, America celebrated

:10:24. > :10:32.its national birthday, July the 4th. But what seems to be uniting this

:10:33. > :10:36.country right now is not an idea, an aspiration, a dream,

:10:37. > :10:37.but rather, feelings Saint Paul, Minnesota started

:10:38. > :10:41.as a focal point last night for vigils and demonstrations

:10:42. > :10:43.which unfolded in New York, No words can express the way

:10:44. > :10:46.that we feel. And here, the main speaker

:10:47. > :10:49.was the mother of Philando Castile, the school cafeteria worker shot

:10:50. > :10:51.dead by a policeman. It was my son today,

:10:52. > :10:54.but it could be yours tomorrow, or yours the next day,

:10:55. > :10:56.or your grandmother, 50 years after the landmark civil

:10:57. > :11:13.rights reforms of the 1960s, many African-Americans still feel

:11:14. > :11:15.they are second-class citizens. It has fuelled the Black Lives

:11:16. > :11:24.Matter campaign. Why, in 2016, we're

:11:25. > :11:28.still talking about, Why do we have to keep

:11:29. > :11:43.saying, we're human? The mood this morning in Saint Paul

:11:44. > :11:51.was very different. A handful of people where yesterday

:11:52. > :11:56.thousands had gathered. But fury quickly came to the surface

:11:57. > :12:01.over the events here and in Dallas. And I'm sorry to their families,

:12:02. > :12:05.that you feel what we feel. But I'm going to tell you something,

:12:06. > :12:16.and don't think this is insensitive. Many hoped that the election

:12:17. > :12:22.of the country's first African-American president

:12:23. > :12:24.could heal the breach in race relations, that it

:12:25. > :12:49.would usher in what was called Plenty more details interviews and

:12:50. > :12:51.analysis on this story on our website.

:12:52. > :12:54.The Islamic State group says it's behind an attack near a Shia

:12:55. > :12:57.mausoleum in the town of Balad, north of Baghdad, which has killed

:12:58. > :13:01.It comes days after almost 300 people were killed in the worst

:13:02. > :13:04.single bombing in Baghdad since Saddam Hussein was toppled.

:13:05. > :13:09.Here's our Middle East correspondent, Jeremy.

:13:10. > :13:14.The entrance to the shrine in Balad has been badly damaged.

:13:15. > :13:18.The shrine itself is untouched, but here, where there were shops

:13:19. > :13:21.and places for people to buy cold drinks and so on, it is really

:13:22. > :13:29.What the people here are saying is that around midnight,

:13:30. > :13:32.four jihadist gunmen came in, heavily armed, and there was a gun

:13:33. > :13:34.battle lasting one to two hours, and finally the men

:13:35. > :13:40.They have taken a lot of lives with them, a lot

:13:41. > :13:45.All this is happening because the jihadists

:13:46. > :13:47.of Islamic State have been under attack.

:13:48. > :13:51.That's why they hit back last weekend in Baghdad,

:13:52. > :13:54.with that enormous bomb that has killed almost, by now, 300 people,

:13:55. > :14:04.Here, the intention as well, I think, is to try to provoke

:14:05. > :14:06.a return to the worst days of the sectarian wars

:14:07. > :14:12.The idea is to try to destabilise the country,

:14:13. > :14:18.Islamic State have been losing ground in Iraq,

:14:19. > :14:22.and they know that if they lose this country, it's going to be much

:14:23. > :14:25.harder for them to hang on to what they have in Syria.

:14:26. > :14:27.And if that goes, it's the end of their dreams

:14:28. > :14:33.So the likelihood is, they will keep on fighting,

:14:34. > :14:36.they'll keep on hitting, they will continue trying to provoke

:14:37. > :14:38.another sectarian war, or a deepening of the existing

:14:39. > :14:46.So the future, I'm afraid to say, is likely to include many more

:14:47. > :14:51.of these kinds of incidents, many more dead.

:14:52. > :14:53.Now a look at some of the days other news.

:14:54. > :14:56.The population of the European Union increased by nearly two million last

:14:57. > :15:00.The EU statistics agency revealed that the population

:15:01. > :15:03.rose to 510 million, largely due to the influx

:15:04. > :15:08.of refugees and migrants, mainly from the Middle East.

:15:09. > :15:11.And for the first time, the EU recorded more deaths than births

:15:12. > :15:16.Job growth in the United States surged in June, exceeding many

:15:17. > :15:22.Figures showed 287,000 were added to the US economy last month -

:15:23. > :15:28.Analysts had predicted there would be an increase of around 175,000.

:15:29. > :15:33.But the unemployment rate also jumped to 4.9% from 4.8% -

:15:34. > :15:40.this was because of more people entering the labour force.

:15:41. > :15:42.Six people are being treated in hospital in Spain

:15:43. > :15:44.after being gored by bulls during the San Fermin

:15:45. > :15:49.More than 1000 people took part in one of the event's famous

:15:50. > :15:51.bull runs, which lasted nearly six minutes -

:15:52. > :16:02.Nato has said it doesn't want to isolate Russia -

:16:03. > :16:05.despite its decision to deploy thousands of troops to the eastern

:16:06. > :16:12.Meeting at a summit in Warsaw, Nato leaders have approved

:16:13. > :16:14.the deployment of 4000 troops in Estonia,

:16:15. > :16:17.Lithuania, Latvia and eastern Poland.

:16:18. > :16:19.They're specifically aimed at deterring threats from Russia,

:16:20. > :16:23.in the light of what happened in Ukraine and Crimea.

:16:24. > :16:25.Nato leaders also discussed the consequences of the UK's

:16:26. > :16:30.Our chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet

:16:31. > :16:50.Yes, Nato often stresses the three Ds, defence, deterrence and

:16:51. > :16:55.dialogue. Here it is very much the deterrence side that is a focus with

:16:56. > :17:02.this new reggae and there are keystone flank. Four battalions

:17:03. > :17:06.stretching across for Baltic states. Nato members, most of all Germany,

:17:07. > :17:10.have been at pains to emphasise to Moscow that this is not meant to be

:17:11. > :17:14.something aggressive towards Russia. They are still open to dialogue. But

:17:15. > :17:19.that has meant an angry response from Moscow today, as the Nato

:17:20. > :17:27.summit got underway. Saying that the idea of the threat from Russia was

:17:28. > :17:32.absurd. Another aspect Russia is concerned about is not just this new

:17:33. > :17:36.gate, but the sanctions, which are taking their toll on the Russian

:17:37. > :17:41.economy. It is for that reason that there is a concern in many ways

:17:42. > :17:45.about Britain's decision to leave the European Union, because Britain

:17:46. > :17:51.has long been a very strong voice within the EU for maintaining

:17:52. > :17:54.sanctions against Russia. When I met Britain's Foreign Secretary Philip

:17:55. > :17:56.Hammond, I asked whether there would now be a wobble in the EU about

:17:57. > :18:02.maintaining those sanctions against Russia. We remain a full member of

:18:03. > :18:07.the European Union, and we will do for some time to come yet. We will

:18:08. > :18:12.continue to make the arguments, as we have done over the last couple of

:18:13. > :18:16.years, to stiffen the resolve of partners to maintain these

:18:17. > :18:22.sanctions. I'm sure we will be able to maintain a robust stance over

:18:23. > :18:26.Russia's aggression in Ukraine. But it is a different question whether

:18:27. > :18:32.in the future, and European Union without Britain in it will have the

:18:33. > :18:36.same political will to do these things. I hope it will, because

:18:37. > :18:42.economic sanctions are a very good way of dealing with this kind of

:18:43. > :18:46.aggression, where we are frankly not willing to meet a military response

:18:47. > :18:49.ourselves, but we do want to send a clear signal that actions have costs

:18:50. > :18:54.to those who are mounting the aggression. British leaders are also

:18:55. > :18:58.trying to send a strong signal here that when it comes to Britain's

:18:59. > :19:06.membership of Nato, it's place at this top table, it will not change.

:19:07. > :19:11.It will remain no and in the future a strong member of the transatlantic

:19:12. > :19:16.alliance. Brexit is not formally on the agenda here, but everyone is

:19:17. > :19:20.talking about it, and expressing anxiety is - what will happen to

:19:21. > :19:24.Britain's defence spending in the future? What will happen to the

:19:25. > :19:28.really crucial relationship between Nato and the European Union? All of

:19:29. > :19:33.the readers here are trying to send out a signal to say there will

:19:34. > :19:37.continue to be a strong relationship between Britain, Nato and Europe,

:19:38. > :19:41.and also, they say, an effort of both to reach out but to send a

:19:42. > :19:44.strong message to Russia as well. -- all of the readers here.

:19:45. > :19:46.France's victory over Germany in Euro 2016

:19:47. > :19:54.and understandably led to scenes like these across the country -

:19:55. > :19:58.thousands of proud French fans celebrating their team's success.

:19:59. > :20:02.It's the first time they have won against Germany in 58 years.

:20:03. > :20:06.France now face Portugal in the competition final on Sunday.

:20:07. > :20:09.Ros Atkins is in Paris - Ros, how expected was this final

:20:10. > :20:25.I think we could have predicted that France would be in the final, they

:20:26. > :20:29.were favourites coming into the turn it. Portugal less so. Let's talk

:20:30. > :20:35.with Jonathan Johnson about this, asset boll writer on French

:20:36. > :20:38.football. We talked right at the beginning of the tournament, and

:20:39. > :20:45.despite the Fifa rankings, Francois was expected to do well. Yes, buoyed

:20:46. > :20:54.by home support, talented team, generation of it excellent young

:20:55. > :21:00.players and experience once. I am not sure the French public really

:21:01. > :21:06.expected them to make the final, but obviously they are delighted to make

:21:07. > :21:10.the final. They are strong favourites. With all respect to

:21:11. > :21:15.Portugal, they have not set the blood racing that often. Absolutely.

:21:16. > :21:20.Looking at how portable has fared so far, and the way that France have

:21:21. > :21:23.been faring, France have to be overwhelming favourites, mix with

:21:24. > :21:26.that home support. Although the home support will be tempered by the fact

:21:27. > :21:30.that there is a big Portuguese contingent that lives here in Paris.

:21:31. > :21:39.All signs point to France victory at the moment. What are your feelings

:21:40. > :21:44.on this expanded euros format, I feel conflicted about it. The Welsh

:21:45. > :21:49.and the Icelandic side have made the case for the bigger pool of teams.

:21:50. > :21:52.There have been some fantastic stories, that has been one of the

:21:53. > :21:56.positives. But to its detriment is the fact that so many games have

:21:57. > :22:01.suffered in quality, like you said. There have been a few dead rubbers.

:22:02. > :22:04.I think one of the biggest problems the tournament has is not

:22:05. > :22:07.necessarily the fact it has been expanded, it is just that there is

:22:08. > :22:12.so much football played during the course of a season that the players

:22:13. > :22:16.are so tired when they arrive it is difficult for them to play at a high

:22:17. > :22:21.level every couple of days. Good to speak to you. Thank you very much

:22:22. > :22:24.indeed. I am here in Paris through the weekend, bringing you coverage

:22:25. > :22:29.from the fanzone right at the base of the Eval tower on the day of the

:22:30. > :22:33.final on Sunday. Depending on who wins, I will either be staying put

:22:34. > :22:36.or getting on an early flight to Portugal on Monday morning. We will

:22:37. > :22:43.also be covering the celebrations after the final.

:22:44. > :22:51.Enjoy it, and very tasty final to come.
