:02:05. > :02:06.in black with his face covered, shooting in what is believed

:02:07. > :02:12.to be a targeted attack. All we do know at this particular

:02:13. > :02:22.time is that there was a shooting, Multiple officers were shot,

:02:23. > :02:33.and we have some that That is what I know

:02:34. > :02:36.for sure right now. We are securing the area

:02:44. > :02:52.you hear something? All of a sudden, my phone started

:02:56. > :02:57.community activities "About 30 shots just happened

:02:58. > :03:02.at a convenience store called Be Baton Rouge was already under

:03:03. > :03:14.scrutiny and tensions high, after the fatal shooting by police

:03:15. > :03:17.almost two weeks ago of the black Family and friends gathered

:03:18. > :03:20.on Friday to honour him - so far today's shooting has not been

:03:21. > :03:26.connected to his death. But earlier this month in Dallas,

:03:27. > :03:29.a gunman fatally shot five police officers as a protest

:03:30. > :03:31.over his killing. The mayor has called

:03:32. > :03:37.for common sense to prevail. The police department, who have lost

:03:38. > :03:41.three of their colleagues, have warned people to stay

:03:42. > :03:56.inside until they are able to trace Let's take you now to a press

:03:57. > :04:01.conference that is happening in Baton Rouge to to do with those

:04:02. > :04:04.police shootings. Let's have a listen.

:04:05. > :04:10.It is an active ongoing investigation with a lot of moving

:04:11. > :04:14.parts right now. Louisiana State police is the lead agency with

:04:15. > :04:20.regard to the investigation itself. We will be working very closely with

:04:21. > :04:23.the Baton Rouge Sheriff 's office and police department from a local

:04:24. > :04:28.perspective and we will be joined with all our federal partners as we

:04:29. > :04:34.look at the many leads that have taken place right now. We will give

:04:35. > :04:39.a 1-800 number for the public to have as we move forward. Let me make

:04:40. > :04:44.something clear. You're interviewing a lot of people. If it does not come

:04:45. > :04:49.from myself, the chief of police, the Baton Rouge head Sheriff, if it

:04:50. > :04:53.does not come from these individuals we cannot confirm it as being

:04:54. > :04:58.factual. Just know that upfront. We will have another press conference

:04:59. > :05:07.tomorrow at 1pm Central standard Time. We will have updates. We're

:05:08. > :05:11.going to allow our investigators... It is a very large crime scene. We

:05:12. > :05:16.will tell people in the Baton Rouge area, if you do not need to be in

:05:17. > :05:20.that area of Airline Highway and that area, please stay away from

:05:21. > :05:22.that area because we will be working through that area throughout the

:05:23. > :05:31.night as we work out specifics. Police also note -- please also note

:05:32. > :05:34.that there is not and activists -- not an active shooters in aria in

:05:35. > :05:38.Baton Rouge. We believe, based on the information we have, this is

:05:39. > :05:43.ongoing... We believe that the person that shot and killed our

:05:44. > :05:47.officers, that he is a person that was shot and killed at the scene.

:05:48. > :05:52.That's what we know right now. We do not believe that we do not have any

:05:53. > :05:56.other shooter held up in the Baton Rouge area but understand that this

:05:57. > :06:01.investigation has a lot of moving parts and pieces and we will be

:06:02. > :06:04.going over each one of those, but right now there is no active

:06:05. > :06:10.shooters scenario going on in Baton Rouge. "Today At approximately

:06:11. > :06:17.8:40am, several Louisiana law enforcement officers were shot near

:06:18. > :06:22.Airline Highway. A call came into Central dispatch at the Baton Rouge

:06:23. > :06:30.police department saying there was a guy carrying a rifle walking in that

:06:31. > :06:34.particular area, at Airline and Goodwood. That was the call that

:06:35. > :06:38.came into us. I will tell you that three officers have died from

:06:39. > :06:43.injuries, two from the Baton Rouge police department and one from East

:06:44. > :06:50.Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff 's Department. One Baton Rouge Sheriff

:06:51. > :06:55.'s deputy is in critical condition. Two radish and officers suffered

:06:56. > :06:59.life-threatening wounds but they are in stable condition at the hospital

:07:00. > :07:03.right now. At approximately 8:40am, Baton Rouge police officers at the

:07:04. > :07:07.convenience store observed an individual wearing All Black stand

:07:08. > :07:15.behind a beauty supply store holding a rifle. At Rob Smedley 8:42am,

:07:16. > :07:18.reports received of shots fired. At approximately 8:44am, reports

:07:19. > :07:24.received of officers down on the scene. At 8:45am, reports received

:07:25. > :07:28.more shots being fired. 8:46am, reports received of the suspect

:07:29. > :07:36.wearing All Black standing next to a car wash is near the convenience

:07:37. > :07:42.store. At 8:48am, units started arriving at the scene. They started

:07:43. > :07:47.getting the bodies to render first aid at the scene. Officers engaged

:07:48. > :07:51.the suspect at that particular time and heals medley died at the scene.

:07:52. > :07:56.State police and multiple agencies responded to the scene in an attempt

:07:57. > :08:01.to secure the area and identify possible potential suspects and

:08:02. > :08:05.further threads in the area. We are asking the public to stay vigilant.

:08:06. > :08:08.If you see something suspicious and you know it is suspicious and out of

:08:09. > :08:13.the ordinary in your particular area, call your local police

:08:14. > :08:22.department. If you know that number, call that number. We ask that if you

:08:23. > :08:40.see suspicious activity and you do not know the number, it is 1-800

:08:41. > :08:46.CALLFBI. 1-800 2255324. We do not have an active shooters scenario in

:08:47. > :08:52.the city Baton Rouge. It will take as in multiple directions. You can

:08:53. > :08:56.help us if you see something out of the ordinary, please call us. We

:08:57. > :08:58.will have a 1pm press conference tomorrow afternoon and we will

:08:59. > :09:03.completely update you on anything that is going on.

:09:04. > :09:16.Thank you, Carl. As Carl was just stating, we have had six officers

:09:17. > :09:23.shot today in Baton Rouge, three of which are Baton Rouge police

:09:24. > :09:33.officers, two of which are deceased. We have had two Sheriff's deputies

:09:34. > :09:36.shot. One is deceased, 45-year-old. One is in critical condition,

:09:37. > :09:41.fighting for his life as we speak, 41-year-old, and one with nonlife

:09:42. > :09:48.threatening injuries. He is in surgery. He is 51 years old. Each

:09:49. > :09:55.one of these individuals is married, each one of these individuals have

:09:56. > :09:58.family. We are grieving as a law enforcement community. We are

:09:59. > :10:05.grieving for each other, grieving for our loss and grieving for our

:10:06. > :10:12.families. We ask for your prayers. Not only for us, like I say, the

:10:13. > :10:16.deputies, but for the families and the co-workers. We are a family, as

:10:17. > :10:20.law enforcement, and we stand here together as you can see. Our number

:10:21. > :10:23.one priority is the safety of our community, the safety of the people

:10:24. > :10:32.who live here, the save the law enforcement. -- the safety of law

:10:33. > :10:38.enforcement. Avril fellow sheriffs are here. We want to assure you that

:10:39. > :10:42.we are having a coordinated effort that is going to ensure that we

:10:43. > :10:46.continue to provide the services necessary to protect the citizens of

:10:47. > :10:57.this parish. With God's help, we will get through this. To me, this

:10:58. > :11:05.is not so much about gun control as it is about what is in men's hearts.

:11:06. > :11:14.And until we come together as a nation, as a people, to heal as a

:11:15. > :11:20.people. If we don't do that and this madness continues, we will surely

:11:21. > :11:24.perish as a people. So I would just ask for your prayers and your

:11:25. > :11:32.support for all of the families of all those involved here today and

:11:33. > :11:33.continue to pray for this parish of this city, this state and this

:11:34. > :11:53.nation. As the others have said, we have had

:11:54. > :12:17.six officers shot today. Three of those officers were BRPD officers.

:12:18. > :12:23.Two of those have died. One has nonlife threatening injuries. We

:12:24. > :12:30.would ask for prayers from this community for our officers, for our

:12:31. > :12:33.families, for the families that have been affected by today's

:12:34. > :12:43.senseless... Senseless shooting that went on this morning. Our prayers

:12:44. > :12:47.for all law-enforcement. We stand united, and this is a united front,

:12:48. > :12:53.make no mistake about that. This is very united. Public safety remains

:12:54. > :12:59.our priority and we will continue to do our job in the light of what has

:13:00. > :13:04.happened. We have several agencies from outside that are coming in to

:13:05. > :13:10.lend support and help. Our officers have been depleted for the last 12,

:13:11. > :13:15.14 days. There are other agencies that have come in to help us out and

:13:16. > :13:24.back us up. That is for this community's safety. As this Sheriff

:13:25. > :13:27.said, we have activated the Sheriff's task force, and it is a

:13:28. > :13:30.coordinated effort going forward. We will get through this as a family.

:13:31. > :13:35.We will get through this as a community. All in all, I want the

:13:36. > :13:39.BRPD officers to know that I support you. Every single one of you. I

:13:40. > :13:43.stand beside you and we're going to get through this. We're going to get

:13:44. > :13:47.through this together. This is not going to tarnish this city or this

:13:48. > :13:53.department. We're going to move forward. Thank U.

:13:54. > :14:00.This is indeed a tragic day for the city of Baton Rouge. When we have

:14:01. > :14:08.the Attorney General of the United States and myself, I want to offer

:14:09. > :14:12.my condolences to the families of those involved in this shooting. All

:14:13. > :14:16.federal law-enforcement assets that are needed will be given to this

:14:17. > :14:20.investigation. We will go wherever it takes us to conclude this

:14:21. > :14:26.investigation. I will tell you that our continuing support and the

:14:27. > :14:29.continuing support of federal law enforcement in this matter has been

:14:30. > :14:35.great. We have the agents from the FBI as well as the Marshall office

:14:36. > :14:38.and people in my office continuing to assist with the investigation and

:14:39. > :14:46.we will continue to do so until justice is served. Tank you.

:14:47. > :14:54.-- thank you. This is truly a sad day in Baton Rouge as we now meet

:14:55. > :14:59.again behind senseless killings. We continue to ask the question and we

:15:00. > :15:04.continue to make the statement, "Let peace prevail in Baton Rouge and

:15:05. > :15:09.this parish". We must look ahead. The president has acknowledged this

:15:10. > :15:16.violence and we will reiterate those things at around 3:30pm our time.

:15:17. > :15:20.But again, the people that you see here today, let me say

:15:21. > :15:27.unequivocally, the president has responded to the needs of Baton

:15:28. > :15:37.Rouge. Not only that, the agencies you see here have always been

:15:38. > :15:41.partners, but the state police, the Sheriff's office and the city's

:15:42. > :15:49.police, we are one family all seeking justice for all of our

:15:50. > :15:53.people. And so, let me thank the president and others for their calls

:15:54. > :15:58.and the governor will elaborate on the call he got from the president.

:15:59. > :16:05.But we must say that we ask you now for your prayers. We also pray for

:16:06. > :16:11.those who were killed or injured today. We want you to pray for their

:16:12. > :16:18.families and be with them not only today but in the future. They are

:16:19. > :16:28.our first responders. Now we pledge to them that we will be their first

:16:29. > :16:34.responders. We must strive to be one nation under God, indivisible for

:16:35. > :16:38.liberty and justice for all. We thank our officers who have fallen

:16:39. > :16:39.in the line of duty. We pray for their families, we pray for peace

:16:40. > :16:49.everywhere. God bless you. Today has been a very tough day here

:16:50. > :16:54.in Baton Rouge and in Louisiana and in our country. And absolutely

:16:55. > :17:00.unspeakable heinous attack on law enforcement here in Baton Rouge

:17:01. > :17:04.claimed the lives of two Baton Rouge police officers, one Sheriff's

:17:05. > :17:10.deputy and injured three others, one of whom right now, as we speak, is

:17:11. > :17:15.absolutely fighting for his life. It's unjustified, it's

:17:16. > :17:20.unjustifiable. The violence, the hatred just has to stop. It's at

:17:21. > :17:25.times like this I wish the command of the English language that I have

:17:26. > :17:32.would be more adequate to the task to convey the full range of emotions

:17:33. > :17:37.that I'm feeling for the state of Louisiana. Earlier today, I along

:17:38. > :17:42.with the mayor and the law-enforcement community here

:17:43. > :17:45.gathered with family members of the victims at the hospital. When I tell

:17:46. > :17:57.you unspeakable tragedy, it's unspeakable. That these men, risking

:17:58. > :18:03.their lives to protect and serve this community, were taken out the

:18:04. > :18:10.way that they were. They are real life, everyday heroes. As you've

:18:11. > :18:15.been told by Carl Edmondson, this is an ongoing investigation, a lot of

:18:16. > :18:17.moving parts in multiple agencies. I want to reassure everyone here in

:18:18. > :18:22.Baton Rouge and around the state that we're doing everything humanly

:18:23. > :18:29.possible to make sure that everyone is protected. Every resource is

:18:30. > :18:38.going to be available to be used to bring these perpetrators, if that

:18:39. > :18:42.art more than one, to justice. Obviously that means federal, state

:18:43. > :18:51.and local. You just heard from the US attorney but we are being aided

:18:52. > :18:53.by the FBI and other agencies as well. I also spoke with the

:18:54. > :18:56.president of the United States a couple of hours ago, who called to

:18:57. > :19:00.express on the half of himself and the first Lady but also the United

:19:01. > :19:09.States, their condolences, their best wishes for those wishing for a

:19:10. > :19:14.full and speedy recovery but also prayers for the people here in Baton

:19:15. > :19:23.Rouge and around the country. We have to do better. An attack on one

:19:24. > :19:27.of us is an attack on all of us. And the people who carried out this act,

:19:28. > :19:34.the individuals, they do not represent the people of Baton Rouge

:19:35. > :19:40.or the state of Louisiana. Or what is best about our country. They

:19:41. > :19:45.don't represent the values we stand for. Obviously our community is

:19:46. > :19:50.hurting but only through peace and unity can we heal. That is going to

:19:51. > :19:55.take constructive dialogue. There simply is no place for more

:19:56. > :19:59.violence. It doesn't help anyone, it doesn't further the conversation, it

:20:00. > :20:05.doesn't address any injustice perceived or real. It is just an

:20:06. > :20:12.injustice in and of itself. We're not going to tolerate more hate and

:20:13. > :20:19.violence tearing apart the communities and families of

:20:20. > :20:23.Louisiana. Just a few days ago, and as I do now, I'm inviting the people

:20:24. > :20:27.around the country is to join their prayers to mind that our nation,

:20:28. > :20:34.that our community here can heal and we can get past this, and certainly

:20:35. > :20:39.pray for the recovery of those officers who were injured today but

:20:40. > :20:41.pray for all of our officers, here in Baton Rouge and around the state

:20:42. > :20:46.and around the country and our family members who everyday expose

:20:47. > :20:51.themselves to great risk of harm simply so they can protect and

:20:52. > :20:56.serve, as they have sworn to do. As you were told by Carl Edmondson,

:20:57. > :21:04.we're not going to take questions at this point. There will be another

:21:05. > :21:11.press briefing tomorrow at 1pm. We will then update you with any

:21:12. > :21:14.additional information that we gather between now and then. So I

:21:15. > :21:20.want to thank you for covering this press conference. Again, ask

:21:21. > :21:25.everyone to join with the folks of Louisiana in solidarity so that as a

:21:26. > :21:29.nation, we can heal, we can get past this and we can be what we're

:21:30. > :21:32.supposed to be in the United States of America. Because we're not there

:21:33. > :21:41.today. God bless you. 1pm tomorrow we will have a

:21:42. > :21:46.briefing. If anything significant happens before then, we will make

:21:47. > :21:50.sure you an to fight of it. You were watching a live press conference

:21:51. > :21:54.there in Baton Rouge with police officials as well as the Louisiana

:21:55. > :22:01.governor and the police officials said very clearly that there is not

:22:02. > :22:05.an active shooter scenario. We did believe that police were looking for

:22:06. > :22:07.other suspects but they had said repeatedly that they believe the

:22:08. > :22:12.suspect that died at the scene was the suspect that shot the officers.

:22:13. > :22:16.They also went through a lot of the timings of events and it appears

:22:17. > :22:21.that everything happened extremely quickly. They did say there is no

:22:22. > :22:25.active shooter scenario. We heard from Governor John Bell Edwards who

:22:26. > :22:32.was extremely sombre and described it as a tough day, and unspeakable

:22:33. > :22:37.act. He said he had spent time with family members of the and said that

:22:38. > :22:44."An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. We will hear a lot

:22:45. > :22:46.more I'm sure in the coming hours and days of the event. President

:22:47. > :22:52.Obama has also issued a statement about the shootings after condemning

:22:53. > :23:09.the killings as "Attacks on civilised society".

:23:10. > :23:15.We believe the president is due to speak in the next half-hour. We will

:23:16. > :23:20.bring that live to you as soon as we get it. The Republican national

:23:21. > :23:24.convention also begins on Monday amid intense security in Cleveland,

:23:25. > :23:28.Ohio. Thousands of people are expected to come to the city to

:23:29. > :23:32.witness Donald Trump formally being announced as the Republican

:23:33. > :23:40.candidate. A large number of protests and rallies are expected

:23:41. > :23:43.throughout the four-day long event. We have already seen some reaction

:23:44. > :23:49.from Donald Trump about these shootings. Can you tell as a bit

:23:50. > :23:53.more about that? Yes. Donald Trump posted a series of messages on

:23:54. > :23:57.social media in response to what has happened in Baton Rouge. I will just

:23:58. > :24:03.share them with you. He said, "We grieve for officers killed in Baton

:24:04. > :24:07.Rouge". He asked how many enforcement people have to die

:24:08. > :24:12.because of a lack of leadership in this country. A dig at President

:24:13. > :24:15.Obama in the way he sees he has handled the relationship between

:24:16. > :24:19.minority communities and the police. Mr Trump issued another tweet, a

:24:20. > :24:25.much more politically charged one. "Trying To fight Isis, now our own

:24:26. > :24:29.people are killing the police. The country is divided and out of

:24:30. > :24:35.control. The world is watching". Tapping into something that will be

:24:36. > :24:37.a theme of this convention and a theme of the election, the divided

:24:38. > :24:42.America. Donald Trump is trying to tap into a river people, a section

:24:43. > :24:46.of the American population who he feels have been left behind by the

:24:47. > :24:51.political classes. Also tapping into some of those divisions now, we are

:24:52. > :24:57.seeing across America in protests across the country. There are also

:24:58. > :25:03.protests that are planned for here in Cleveland. There is one which is

:25:04. > :25:09.already under way. It is called the Shut Down Trump Rally. There are

:25:10. > :25:13.only expected to be about 100-200 people at that rally but there are a

:25:14. > :25:20.number of different protests planned this week. Some will be pro-Trump

:25:21. > :25:25.but the vast majority of them are in the order of the Shut Down Trump

:25:26. > :25:32.Rally today. Although the Black Lives Matter movement will not be

:25:33. > :25:37.protesting here, they say they do not see the point as Donald Trump

:25:38. > :25:42.does not CI to eye with them on the issues they are campaigning on, but

:25:43. > :25:44.they will be at the meeting next week.

:25:45. > :25:50.We are hearing that the head of the police union is asking for a

:25:51. > :25:54.suspension of the open carry firearms at the convention. That is

:25:55. > :25:58.quite extraordinary, isn't it? Given everything in terms of the

:25:59. > :26:00.challenges the police are facing here and huge security, it is

:26:01. > :26:05.perhaps unsurprising he might have been asking for that. Especially in

:26:06. > :26:10.the wake of the Dallas police shootings, where we even had the

:26:11. > :26:13.Dallas police chief saying that actually open carry laws which are

:26:14. > :26:18.the case in Texas sometimes make it difficult for police to work out who

:26:19. > :26:23.is potentially an attacker and police chief Brown said that it made

:26:24. > :26:28.it challenging to have open carry. Indeed, the police union here has

:26:29. > :26:34.called for the open carry laws here in Ohio to be suspended. A statement

:26:35. > :26:38.from the Governor of Ohio, Jon Kay sick, basically said that is not in

:26:39. > :26:44.his power and would not be in his power, it would be up to state

:26:45. > :26:49.politicians to deal with that. Many people here feel strongly about the

:26:50. > :26:54.right to openly carry a firearm. Governor Kasick said that what is

:26:55. > :27:01.important is restoring the bonds between the community and police.

:27:02. > :27:03.Thank you very much for that. I'm sure we will be keeping an eye on

:27:04. > :27:07.the convention as closely as possible.

:27:08. > :27:09.Thousands of mourners in Turkey have attended funerals for those killed

:27:10. > :27:13.The foreign ministry put the number of dead at almost 300,

:27:14. > :27:28.John is a security adviser in the Washington -based think tank. He

:27:29. > :27:35.formerly worked as security adviser to Dick Cheney. First of all, what

:27:36. > :27:40.is your reaction to this attempted coup? It seems quite extraordinary.

:27:41. > :27:47.Yes, but not completely unexpected. I think the coup was less a cause of

:27:48. > :27:51.instability in Turkey's problems than it was really a symptom of it.

:27:52. > :27:56.This is something that has been building for quite some time.

:27:57. > :28:01.President Erdogan has been engaged on a multi-year effort to

:28:02. > :28:08.consolidate power and to attack his opponents, to move Turkey in a more

:28:09. > :28:13.Islamist direction. I think it's increasingly polarised Turkish

:28:14. > :28:19.society and particularly an institution like the Turkish

:28:20. > :28:25.military that at least previously had been constitutionally charged

:28:26. > :28:31.with protecting the secular nature of the Turkish state. John,

:28:32. > :28:38.President Erdogan has now gone about arresting judges, which seems to me

:28:39. > :28:43.that he is using this failed coup as a reason to go after his enemies. Is

:28:44. > :28:45.that the conclusion you would reach? I'm afraid it is the predictable

:28:46. > :28:53.conclusion that we would have to reach. That's President Erdogan,

:28:54. > :28:58.everything we know about him is that we will -- he will not let this kind

:28:59. > :29:03.of license go to waste. He will in fact seize upon it not only to

:29:04. > :29:10.attack those who may in fact be responsible for this attack but to

:29:11. > :29:13.go against all of his opponents and try to complete the job that he has

:29:14. > :29:18.been engaged in for several years now, to essentially eliminate all

:29:19. > :29:26.opposition to his rule and to his efforts to build a real imperial

:29:27. > :29:29.presidency, including calling for very controversial constitutional

:29:30. > :29:37.changes that would in fact make him the equivalent of Russia's President

:29:38. > :29:43.Putin. Just briefly, John, could President Erdogan be right? Could

:29:44. > :29:47.others be seeking to unseat him and there could be this massive

:29:48. > :29:53.conspiracy? We have seen a major coup, there are forces moving

:29:54. > :29:58.against him. Well, it is hard for me to believe that this ageing cleric,

:29:59. > :30:04.however popular he may be, has been able from several thousand miles to

:30:05. > :30:09.engineer this kind of coup. I have no love lost for him. The irony is

:30:10. > :30:13.that him and his followers were entirely in the hoots with President

:30:14. > :30:18.Erdogan only a few years ago, when President Erdogan was staging show

:30:19. > :30:21.trials to bring down the Turkish military and bring it to heal using

:30:22. > :30:27.what has been admitted now has trumped up evidence. With that job

:30:28. > :30:35.done, President Erdogan quickly moved against Gulen as an

:30:36. > :30:39.independent source of power that could one day down the line

:30:40. > :30:42.challenge him. This is a fight between two sorts of people who I

:30:43. > :30:46.think the United States should have no love lost for either of them.

:30:47. > :30:51.John, thank you very much for your time and analysis.

:30:52. > :30:58.Three police officers have been shot dead in baton rude Chindit do I see

:30:59. > :31:10.an hour. More coming up on BBC world News.

:31:11. > :31:15.Jane Hill will be back with a full round-up of the day's news. First

:31:16. > :31:21.our world. No agreement was better

:31:22. > :31:33.than a bad agreement. These negotiations were essentially

:31:34. > :31:36.about curbing Iran's nuclear programme in return for suspension

:31:37. > :31:41.and then later on lifting of international

:31:42. > :31:47.sanctions against Iran. I think it's certainly made doing

:31:48. > :31:50.business much more difficult to have Those times of eating together,

:31:51. > :31:57.breaking bread together, always are useful in building

:31:58. > :32:01.the relationships you need when you're in the midst of such

:32:02. > :32:12.a tough, tough negotiation. I asked everyone to put their iPhone

:32:13. > :33:15.in the fridge. I think from the outset,

:33:16. > :33:20.most people were rather sceptical and thought that the chances to get

:33:21. > :33:23.a deal were below 50% Enormous technical difficulties,

:33:24. > :33:34.complicated technical questions. On the other hand, the political

:33:35. > :33:40.framework, which was also So we had to deal with two

:33:41. > :33:44.challenges, a technical one It is about centrifuges,

:33:45. > :33:53.stockpiles, stabiliser tubs. Rather quickly, you need people

:33:54. > :33:57.who are experts. I became a little more

:33:58. > :34:13.knowledgeable. In all of the negotiations, it

:34:14. > :34:19.is not only a negotiation with Iran, It is negotiating with each

:34:20. > :34:23.of the partners sitting at the table, and then

:34:24. > :34:26.with the P5+1, the permanent members of the Security Council,

:34:27. > :34:29.plus Germany and the EU, who have to come to an agreement,

:34:30. > :34:34.and then an agreement with Iran. When talks were going on like that,

:34:35. > :34:37.it was a logistical Every time there was an extension

:34:38. > :34:48.or they missed a deadline. As soon as our live broadcast

:34:49. > :34:56.was over, we would all rush to the hotel reception,

:34:57. > :34:59.extending our rooms or booking I don't think any of us knew how

:35:00. > :35:55.this process would evolve, but over the two years,

:35:56. > :35:58.the number of people of course grew that were directly involved

:35:59. > :36:03.in the process, because we had to expand the team according

:36:04. > :36:06.to the needs. But it is also part of our daily

:36:07. > :36:11.bread in terms of host country, policy and good offices that

:36:12. > :36:15.Switzerland has provided for the past 150 years, so in a way,

:36:16. > :36:18.it is also in our genes. Each time a minister arrived

:36:19. > :36:23.in Geneva, the chief of protocol of Geneva and myself

:36:24. > :36:28.were at the airport greeting the Minister, and our foreign

:36:29. > :36:32.minister always welcomed him with a personal letter

:36:33. > :36:37.and some Swiss chocolate. Obviously when you start to welcome

:36:38. > :36:42.these dignitaries, the amount of security and the amount of cars

:36:43. > :36:46.that arrived when I was standing in front of the hotel,

:36:47. > :36:50.for some minutes you feel like you are looking at a Hollywood

:36:51. > :36:57.movie but being part of it. It all started with,

:36:58. > :37:01.at the beginning around 70 rooms, bearing in mind that

:37:02. > :37:06.the hotel counts 168 rooms. At the end of the talks,

:37:07. > :37:10.the hotel was fully booked. This room was the working room,

:37:11. > :37:15.the heart of operations, but also my personal room,

:37:16. > :37:18.because from the Swiss foreign ministry, one person had to stay

:37:19. > :37:21.all of the time, 24 So I had to transform this room

:37:22. > :37:29.and the working room There were about ten persons in this

:37:30. > :37:35.room for the meetings, but also my team during for the day,

:37:36. > :37:39.and they worked day It was not a luxury life we led,

:37:40. > :37:46.and it was a relatively small room for a relatively

:37:47. > :37:49.big group of people, with many computer

:37:50. > :37:52.screens on the table, At the end of the day,

:37:53. > :37:59.it felt more like a student's home We weren't surprised

:38:00. > :38:44.at all that we were the target We used to joke that the number

:38:45. > :38:49.of bugs in a room probably Everybody wants to learn

:38:50. > :38:54.about the other side's playbook before they enter a game,

:38:55. > :38:56.as well as countries interested We knew about the sensitivity

:38:57. > :39:01.of these negotiations, so for example, when I had my

:39:02. > :39:05.pre-meetings with my own team, which we had every morning,

:39:06. > :39:09.I asked everyone to put Allegations were made, and these

:39:10. > :39:16.allegations are investigated And these investigations

:39:17. > :39:24.are still ongoing, so I cannot I think it certainly made doing

:39:25. > :39:53.business much more difficult to have social media everywhere,

:39:54. > :39:56.and to have our every movement My wife was always e-mailing me

:39:57. > :40:02.to ask why I was eating pizza on a random Friday night and not

:40:03. > :40:10.getting on a plane home. In Lausanne, the talks

:40:11. > :40:13.were dragging on and on, so once when a European diplomat

:40:14. > :40:18.was coming back to the hotel, I grabbed him and said,

:40:19. > :40:21."For heaven's sake and for that of my planning, please

:40:22. > :40:25.tell me how many more days He was coming back

:40:26. > :40:31.with a bag of shopping. He didn't say much, just opened that

:40:32. > :40:37.bag and showed me what was inside. There was a sack of

:40:38. > :41:20.new, fresh underwear. People have asked whether I got

:41:21. > :41:27.And whether we started to really understand each other,

:41:28. > :41:29.I have no doubt we understand each other better.

:41:30. > :41:34.You can't spend that many hours with each other and not.

:41:35. > :41:37.We certainly got to know each other's lives.

:41:38. > :41:42.Abbas Araghchi and I both became grandparents during this time.

:41:43. > :41:46.And so we shared videos of our grandchildren.

:41:47. > :41:49.That did not change how tough we were with each other

:41:50. > :41:52.in the negotiations, because he had a responsibility

:41:53. > :41:55.to the national interest of his country, and I had

:41:56. > :42:01.a responsibility to the national interest of my country.

:42:02. > :42:05.I got a tipoff from a source that told me the Iranian Foreign Minister

:42:06. > :42:11.had arranged for the US counterpart to go and dine in this

:42:12. > :42:15.Persian restaurant and experience Iranian food.

:42:16. > :42:20.So I rushed to that restaurant and sneaked into the place,

:42:21. > :42:30.The top brass of the US negotiating team in that restaurant dining

:42:31. > :42:36.We had the phone calls, they said John Kerry

:42:37. > :42:40.and his delegation were coming to our place.

:42:41. > :42:47.So we received them and they had dinner here.

:42:48. > :42:52.I asked him the population of Iran, they are waiting for this

:42:53. > :42:57.negotiation, I hope you will get success from this negotiation.

:42:58. > :43:01.He told me, "Did you say this to Mr Zarif?

:43:02. > :43:04.I said I didn't, I'm telling it to you.

:43:05. > :43:10.So he said, "I will call him and tell him what you told me."

:43:11. > :43:15.There were two dining rooms, one for the P5+1 and the European Union,

:43:16. > :43:22.That was in part because our dining room had alcohol and the Persian

:43:23. > :43:28.But as the talks went on, Minister Zarif invited several of us

:43:29. > :43:33.to dine with the Iranian team, which was a very good thing to do,

:43:34. > :43:40.And those times of eating together, breaking bread together,

:43:41. > :43:44.always are useful in building the relationships you need

:43:45. > :43:55.when you're in the midst of such a tough, tough negotiation.

:43:56. > :43:59.In Lausanne, the talks broke for a few days

:44:00. > :44:03.because the Iranian President's mother passed away.

:44:04. > :44:06.The President's brother was a key member of the Iranian

:44:07. > :44:10.negotiating team all throughout the negotiations.

:44:11. > :44:14.On the morning of that day, the US team went to the Iranian

:44:15. > :44:53.counterparts, headed by John Kerry, to console the President's brother.

:44:54. > :45:00.March 2015 was a turning point because it was now or never.

:45:01. > :45:05.We had, you know, the framework agreement.

:45:06. > :45:09.But I think Lausanne, where the agreement was in a way

:45:10. > :45:14.crystallised, framed, and then negotiations

:45:15. > :45:24.I think what was the hardest part of Lausanne were those last two days

:45:25. > :45:27.when we were trying to drive to a conclusion,

:45:28. > :45:37.We thought we were close, so we all agreed to stay one more day.

:45:38. > :45:40.And indeed we then got to the parameters that

:45:41. > :45:53.became the basis for the final 27 days in Vienna.

:45:54. > :46:00.I will never forget the moment where the EU told me that we can

:46:01. > :46:05.organise and go ahead with the press conference.

:46:06. > :46:09.We were waiting for 72 hours for this moment.

:46:10. > :46:14.It was a very emotional moment behind the curtain.

:46:15. > :46:18.And then it came the moment when they asked me to

:46:19. > :46:34.Today, we have taken a decisive step.

:46:35. > :46:39.We have reached solutions on key parameters of a joint

:46:40. > :47:43.We have made progress and we will make progress.

:47:44. > :47:46.Progress was made on the way forward.

:47:47. > :48:16.We hope to make substantial further progress then.

:48:17. > :48:21.When Federica Mogherini was chairing a round with the ministers

:48:22. > :48:25.in Vienna during the endgame, when she had a heated argument

:48:26. > :48:28.with the Iranian Foreign Minister and he said, "Never

:48:29. > :48:33.And the Russian Foreign Minister came in, "Nor a Russian!"

:48:34. > :48:38.Then things calmed down very easily, but we had similar

:48:39. > :48:44.We also had walkouts when I stood up and said, "I'm not going to continue

:48:45. > :48:50.for the day," but then we resumed early the next day.

:48:51. > :48:52.REPORTER: Minister Zarif, are we going to have a deal?

:48:53. > :49:04.We're making progress, we need to make more progress

:49:05. > :49:31.In Vienna, the talks were dragging on and on.

:49:32. > :49:36.They had to write the text of the final deal.

:49:37. > :49:41.And it was proving to be far more difficult than they had anticipated.

:49:42. > :49:45.So they missed the deadline of July 1, then they extended it

:49:46. > :49:53.They ended up on a rolling deadline basically.

:49:54. > :49:58.Just before midnight when the top Iranian negotiator, Abbas Araqchi,

:49:59. > :50:04.posted something on his Instagram, the picture of the Iranian supreme

:50:05. > :50:09.leader's hand as if he's signing off something.

:50:10. > :50:14.There is no commentary, but that picture was speaking for itself.

:50:15. > :50:19.That's when we thought there might be a deal.

:50:20. > :50:24.Later on, our cameraman caught the Iranian negotiating team late

:50:25. > :50:31.They were very relaxed, happy and smiley, going through that

:50:32. > :50:42.I knew for sure that the deal was done 3am in the morning

:50:43. > :50:47.This is actually when we finalised the texts.

:50:48. > :50:50.I felt tremendously relieved at that moment.

:50:51. > :50:53.It was just so overwhelming that I can't even say I was happy,

:50:54. > :52:05.I think that the Iranian nuclear deal made a huge contribution

:52:06. > :52:10.to solve the nuclear problem in a peaceful way.

:52:11. > :52:16.I'm strongly convinced if we had not reached this

:52:17. > :52:23.solution in summer of 2015, we would have been confronted

:52:24. > :52:28.with a very difficult situation, including a discussion

:52:29. > :52:42.When we reached success and it was a private moment

:52:43. > :52:46.for everyone to reflect on what we had done,

:52:47. > :52:51.and each of the ministers made a statement, and every statement

:52:52. > :52:56.And Secretary Kerry was the last person to speak.

:52:57. > :53:02.And he recounted that when he was 21, he went

:53:03. > :53:07.He made a commitment that he would do whatever

:53:08. > :53:12.he could in his life to make sure that there was never war ever again.

:53:13. > :53:17.And that's what he was about in this negotiation.

:53:18. > :53:32.And then everyone, including the Iranians, applauded.

:53:33. > :53:37.Because I think for all of us, we understood that what we had done

:53:38. > :54:23.was to try to ensure peace, not war.

:54:24. > :54:32.You may have heard news there is a heatwave on the way. Certainly over

:54:33. > :54:38.the next few days, the weather will bear no resemblance to what we saw

:54:39. > :54:42.during the first half of July. That was cloudy, dollar than average and

:54:43. > :54:49.in the first 14 days, nowhere reached 25 Celsius. That changed at

:54:50. > :54:54.the weekend. Hotspots got up to the upper 20s. Some places will get up

:54:55. > :54:58.to the 30s. The heat building as high-pressure nudges northwards

:54:59. > :55:06.across the UK and that means for many on Monday, some very warm to

:55:07. > :55:11.hot sunshine. Coastal parts, along with the English channel run the

:55:12. > :55:15.risk of poor visibility and northern Scotland, close to a weather front

:55:16. > :55:25.so outbreaks of rain for one more day. Maybe just 15 or 16 Celsius.

:55:26. > :55:31.Elsewhere, low to mid 20s. By Tuesday, we are importing extra heat

:55:32. > :55:36.from the continent. In France they may get around 40 Celsius. We will

:55:37. > :55:42.not be that hot but the hotspots breaking 30 Celsius, particularly in

:55:43. > :55:47.an area from Birmingham to London. The hottest places, upper 20s and

:55:48. > :55:57.low 30s. Across the beaches it will be a bit more refreshing. Some

:55:58. > :56:03.places will get higher. Not everyone's cup of tea. It comes with

:56:04. > :56:06.high to very high UV levels, high pollen, briefly deteriorating air

:56:07. > :56:12.quality and some stifling nights. These are temperatures on Tuesday

:56:13. > :56:18.night, Wednesday morning. If it is not your cup of see, when will a

:56:19. > :56:23.thunderstorm,? You will not wait too long. A major disturbance coming

:56:24. > :56:28.Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Disruptive downpours from the end of

:56:29. > :56:32.Tuesday and on through Wednesday, particularly across western and

:56:33. > :56:36.northern parts of the UK, but nowhere in new from catching a

:56:37. > :56:39.thundery downpours. Watch this space. But the heat is still very

:56:40. > :56:46.much about across south-eastern parts. As we go into Thursday, the

:56:47. > :56:51.cut-off that flow of hot air from the continent. We are starting to

:56:52. > :56:58.look to the Atlantic once again. A tramps issuing Day on Thursday. --

:56:59. > :57:03.transition. Temperatures come down a few degrees and then very much by

:57:04. > :57:09.Friday, Gaitlin take weather taking over once again. No potent weapon
