:00:08. > :00:16.You are watching continuing coverage here. There is a developing
:00:17. > :00:25.situation in Munich in southern Germany where at around 430 GMT,
:00:26. > :00:28.there was an incident at a shopping centre called the Olympia shopping
:00:29. > :00:33.centre in the north-west of Munich and people reported that there was a
:00:34. > :00:37.shooting. Police are saying that they believe they could be looking
:00:38. > :00:41.for more than one gunmen and at the moment that person is at large and
:00:42. > :00:47.the don't know where the person is. There were also reports and some of
:00:48. > :00:53.them are at odds with each other suggesting that an assailant had
:00:54. > :01:00.managed to escape from the shopping centre and get down underground,
:01:01. > :01:06.into the subway. And as a consequence, the transit system has
:01:07. > :01:13.been shut down to try to see whether they can locate the person or people
:01:14. > :01:15.responsible. Various reports from different local broadcasters, being
:01:16. > :01:20.quoted by the international news agencies, suggesting that there are
:01:21. > :01:27.multiple casualties. Whether that means that they are the talent he
:01:28. > :01:34.the moment it is not clear. -- the talent he is. If local broadcaster
:01:35. > :01:37.has been quoted saying that the interior ministry has confirmed
:01:38. > :01:41.there are three people who have died. But this is rather at arms
:01:42. > :01:46.length at the moment so we are not able to verify that at the moment.
:01:47. > :01:50.We have seen and I'm terrified video shot on a phone outside McDonald's
:01:51. > :01:59.restaurant -- and I'm terrified video. It shows a man appearing to
:02:00. > :02:02.take aim at people outside the McDonald's. The British Foreign
:02:03. > :02:06.Office is investigating whether any British people are involved in the
:02:07. > :02:11.incident and a spokesman said we are urgently investigating an incident
:02:12. > :02:14.in Munich and stand ready to provide assistance. But the number of
:02:15. > :02:21.casualties we are hearing has buried. -- varied. As many as 15
:02:22. > :02:31.fatalities being talked about by one source. Another source saying it was
:02:32. > :02:34.three. We are hearing rumours, unconfirmed as yet, of other
:02:35. > :02:38.locations or another location in Munich, been the scene of a
:02:39. > :02:44.shooting. That is unconfirmed but one journalist locally that we spoke
:02:45. > :02:51.to a short while ago said the attacker travelled by underground
:02:52. > :02:53.into the centre of Munich to a very popular to wrist destination, and
:02:54. > :02:58.carried or continued and attack them. That is one journalist telling
:02:59. > :03:03.us this. Nothing confirmed so far but police say they have not managed
:03:04. > :03:12.to capture an attacker or attackers. One man who works at a nearby petrol
:03:13. > :03:21.station has described what he saw. We saw ambulances, like, firemen and
:03:22. > :03:28.police. But all this area, all the streets now... There are no cars.
:03:29. > :03:32.All the streets are blocked. The people are scared.
:03:33. > :03:36.Everyone is running around. That was an eyewitness from close to the
:03:37. > :03:41.Olympia shopping centre, who described what he had been able to
:03:42. > :03:46.see. Are corresponded to is following the story for us is here.
:03:47. > :03:48.What are the latest developments? The latest information is from the
:03:49. > :03:53.Munich police who said on Twitter within the last few minutes that the
:03:54. > :03:59.whereabouts of the offender or offenders is unknown. So that
:04:00. > :04:04.confirms these reports that there is at least one gunmen at loose in the
:04:05. > :04:08.city. There are these unconfirmed reports of other incidences around
:04:09. > :04:12.the city but certainly it is a situation that is not under control.
:04:13. > :04:18.I have been able to have a close look at that video you have been
:04:19. > :04:22.showing. Unverified as yet. A gunmen outside McDonald's. If you look at
:04:23. > :04:30.it very closely, as I have done, you can see it is a man who walks up
:04:31. > :04:33.very slowly and calmly, apparently, places himself outside McDonald's,
:04:34. > :04:38.and then start shooting. And you hear a number of shots fired. He
:04:39. > :04:44.appears to have a handgun in his left hand. He appears to have a long
:04:45. > :04:50.barrelled gun of some sort in his other hand. She is dressed in black,
:04:51. > :04:57.he has a black T-shirt with a logo of some sort on it. Which is
:04:58. > :05:01.indecipherable. His ethnicity, you can't say. It appears to be one
:05:02. > :05:04.gunmen. You mentioned those pictures and I
:05:05. > :05:17.think we can watch and listen to them now.
:05:18. > :05:24.That is some other footage as well. I think we can look and see if we
:05:25. > :05:29.can bring you those that and he was talking about. Was it clear what you
:05:30. > :05:35.were watching? Which direction he was shooting in? Into the McDonald's
:05:36. > :05:39.store or away? Was it clear? He was outside the
:05:40. > :05:44.McDonald's store. He stood outside the main entrance, facing outwards.
:05:45. > :05:53.There were people just milling about in the the solidity, and it appears
:05:54. > :05:56.he starts shooting away from the shopping mall. I've seen other
:05:57. > :05:59.images of people inside them all heaving the shooting and taking
:06:00. > :06:05.cover. But the shooting itself appears to be in the open air
:06:06. > :06:12.outside the shopping mall. You might not notice, but Munich
:06:13. > :06:15.police have a Facebook page and they're saying eyewitnesses have
:06:16. > :06:22.told them there were three people who were armed with weapons,
:06:23. > :06:26.firearms of some sort, and eyewitnesses are reporting that two
:06:27. > :06:32.police. They are saying there was a shooting which then moved into
:06:33. > :06:36.another area and the shopping centre, so it seems that these
:06:37. > :06:41.Google were on the move, as you might expect. -- these people were
:06:42. > :07:06.on the move. Let's look at these pictures you were talking about.
:07:07. > :07:13.So it seems that the person who was filming this on a mobile phone had
:07:14. > :07:18.spotted this person because they were dressed head to toe in black.
:07:19. > :07:23.That's right. The interesting thing is you hear no shouts, no sound
:07:24. > :07:30.before the firing starts. We know that sometimes on these occasions,
:07:31. > :07:33.if it is an attack linked to Islamic terrorists, you hear shouts, but on
:07:34. > :07:41.this occasion, as far as we can see and hear from that video, no
:07:42. > :07:46.warning, nothing is said before that gunmen just opens fire. It seems
:07:47. > :07:48.indiscriminately on people around him.
:07:49. > :07:52.Yes, and at the moment we don't know exactly how many people we are given
:07:53. > :08:00.with. The suggestion is that it is three. We don't know anything about
:08:01. > :08:05.the motive of this person is born in Germany, we don't know any of those
:08:06. > :08:09.details at the moment. What are you hearing about casualties?
:08:10. > :08:11.There have been varied reports. Initially we heard from police
:08:12. > :08:18.sources that there was one confirms death. And up to ten casualties. We
:08:19. > :08:23.have since heard from various German media sources saying that they could
:08:24. > :08:30.be up to the Dean deaths. I think the latest we have on the record is
:08:31. > :08:34.that there are multiple casualties -- 15 deaths. Quite possibly
:08:35. > :08:38.multiple deaths. The other interesting thing is, I am no
:08:39. > :08:43.firearms expert, but it seems to be discreet, individual shots. It is
:08:44. > :08:46.not the rattle of what you and I would know as a machine gun. It
:08:47. > :08:50.seems to be a lot of shots but individual shots.
:08:51. > :09:00.For the moment, thank you very much. Let's talk to a bar, who is in a
:09:01. > :09:06.restaurant. -- lets talk to our correspondent.
:09:07. > :09:12.What is happening there. Can you hear me?
:09:13. > :09:17.I am afraid we have not got contact with her. Let's try to talk to a
:09:18. > :09:21.freelance reporter at the scene in Munich.
:09:22. > :09:29.Can you hear us? What is happening where you are?
:09:30. > :09:34.I'm just in front of the Olympia shopping centre and it is the
:09:35. > :09:38.closest place I can get. In front of the police. The police close all the
:09:39. > :09:43.roads and it is deserted. In front of me there is a group of
:09:44. > :09:48.inhabitants or shoppers, very quietly what going on. A great
:09:49. > :09:56.number of police cars. I can hear the helicopters are bit far-away. At
:09:57. > :10:00.the moment it is very, very calm. It is extraordinary that you say it
:10:01. > :10:03.was calm. Housing did you get there after you became aware of what was
:10:04. > :10:08.going on? -- how soon did you get there? I was
:10:09. > :10:13.cycling here and most of the people were moving in the opposite
:10:14. > :10:19.direction. So I was trying to get as close as possible. All the main
:10:20. > :10:24.roads are closed. I went through some courtyards, as close as
:10:25. > :10:38.possible. But finally I was in front of the entrance of the underground.
:10:39. > :10:43.Where I am standing I can see from far-away. I can see searching cars
:10:44. > :10:46.in front of the main entrance of the Olympia shopping centre.
:10:47. > :10:50.As far as you know? Are there many people inside and locked down or has
:10:51. > :10:57.everybody been moved? Well, it is difficult to judge, for
:10:58. > :11:02.me to know. Because I am just an the spot. I'm not hearing the local
:11:03. > :11:08.media but at the point I was leaving my place, the media advised
:11:09. > :11:14.everybody to just get home. And leave the streets. Apparently also
:11:15. > :11:20.the Metro stations are closing and so everything is deserted and empty.
:11:21. > :11:25.Are you getting any reports where you are about any other incidences
:11:26. > :11:30.in other parts of the city? Well, I was listening to the radio
:11:31. > :11:33.and they had been talking about incidences in the main shopping area
:11:34. > :11:38.of the city but apparently it was not confirmed.
:11:39. > :11:42.It may be just wrong. And at the moment, we're hearing that please
:11:43. > :11:49.still cannot say for sure if there is one or more attackers involved
:11:50. > :11:51.but they suspect there are more than one cars of what eyewitnesses have
:11:52. > :12:03.been saying. Apparently, it is very difficult to
:12:04. > :12:07.judge from here. I'm on the street in a deserted calm place.
:12:08. > :12:14.Tell us a bout the feeling in Germany. Has there been a heightened
:12:15. > :12:18.sense of security, fear of a kind of attack like this because of what
:12:19. > :12:22.they've seen in France and Belgium? Also what we saw earlier this week a
:12:23. > :12:32.train? Exactly. I happened to be there but
:12:33. > :12:37.earlier. It is a cute little city. My feeling is that the people are
:12:38. > :12:40.getting more and more aware about the danger that might come to
:12:41. > :12:48.Germany as well. Because we have been observing a bit from far-away
:12:49. > :12:55.and now it is just moving closer. And obviously Munich used to be the
:12:56. > :13:02.centre of the refugees coming last year, last summer here in thousands
:13:03. > :13:08.and thousands. The inhabitants used to be very, very friendly and
:13:09. > :13:13.helping a lot. Just going to the main station at helping people with
:13:14. > :13:19.food and clothes but now, I am starting to get the feeling that the
:13:20. > :13:32.people are less and less friendly to the Muslims. Obviously, women
:13:33. > :13:39.dressed in traditional clothing. I think it is palpable how the mood is
:13:40. > :13:42.changing. You are saying people are becoming
:13:43. > :13:46.more fearful? We don't have anything at this stage about you is behind
:13:47. > :13:54.this attack, what their motives are and who they are. But in terms of
:13:55. > :14:00.security in a shopping centre like Olympia, is the Renault thing to
:14:01. > :14:03.stop people going in with a firearm? Is there any kind of screening or
:14:04. > :14:08.visit a relaxed western shopping centre like you would find in
:14:09. > :14:15.London? This is a very relaxed shopping
:14:16. > :14:24.centre. It is in the middle of Olympic village, the same as Olympic
:14:25. > :14:32.Games in Munich. It used to be the housing of the Sportsman in the
:14:33. > :14:38.1970s, I think. So it is a residential, quiet area. And
:14:39. > :14:45.everywhere in Munich is very calm and relaxed, it is a very safe city.
:14:46. > :14:53.A great presence of police. The city is famous as being a strong police
:14:54. > :14:57.city. Right at the Olympia shopping
:14:58. > :15:00.centre. Thank you very much for talking to us.
:15:01. > :15:03.Just a few more lines to you and we'll recap on what has been
:15:04. > :15:07.happening this evening in Munich. The city's police forces are saying
:15:08. > :15:15.on social media that the suspects are still on the run and that people
:15:16. > :15:19.should please Boyd public places. -- avoid public places. They're using
:15:20. > :15:22.emergency services with the support of special forces. The federal
:15:23. > :15:31.police and neighbouring councils as well. And a little while ago we were
:15:32. > :15:34.just saying that the Bavarian Interior Ministry are quoted as
:15:35. > :15:42.saying there were three casualties, three fatalities. They have now said
:15:43. > :15:47.that the local reports are not true. We did heavily wrapped those up with
:15:48. > :15:50.a note of caution. Our correspondence Richard has the
:15:51. > :15:54.latest now on the event so far in Munich.
:15:55. > :15:58.This and verified video apparently shows the moment a group of people
:15:59. > :16:09.ran into a gunmen on the streets of Munich. Around the shopping centre,
:16:10. > :16:18.there was panic as people tried to find their way to safety. Many armed
:16:19. > :16:23.police officers including special forces were soon on the scene. But
:16:24. > :16:34.from the roof of the car park, a gunmen carries on firing. The
:16:35. > :16:38.emergency services poured into the area, telling people to get off the
:16:39. > :16:46.streets and go home. The Metro has been closed down.
:16:47. > :16:55.We see just ambulances, like, firemen and police. But all this
:16:56. > :17:01.area is evacuated, all the streets, now, are... There are no cars. The
:17:02. > :17:07.streets are blocked. The people are scared. Everyone is running around.
:17:08. > :17:09.The police believe they are dealing with a shooting rampage and there
:17:10. > :17:17.may be more than one gunmen involved. So far, no one has been
:17:18. > :17:23.detained. There are reports of many casualties.
:17:24. > :17:30.Still so many things that we don't know for sure what the police have
:17:31. > :17:35.said. That report by Richard is that the suspects or suspect are still on
:17:36. > :17:43.the run. Please avoid public places. That's part of it is still very much
:17:44. > :17:48.an ongoing operation but in terms of casualties, that number, we've seen
:17:49. > :17:54.many different sources quoting police, varying the figures, but we
:17:55. > :17:58.know there have been fatalities, not completely confirmed just how many
:17:59. > :18:03.people have been caught up in this. Let's stop to Damien beginners who
:18:04. > :18:07.is in Berlin. What do you know for sure?
:18:08. > :18:12.What we're hearing now in Germany is that there are three deaths, three
:18:13. > :18:18.fatalities, according to officials in Germany. And it seems that
:18:19. > :18:21.according to various sources now that there were a couple of people
:18:22. > :18:25.involved in the attacks. But of course the situation is still very
:18:26. > :18:31.fluid so the numbers have varied wildly between one and 16 so far.
:18:32. > :18:36.This is the first concrete, official number that seems to have so far
:18:37. > :18:40.come out from an official Government source. So, that should certainly be
:18:41. > :18:47.taken seriously, but there is still a lot of confusion in Munich itself
:18:48. > :18:52.because, as the area effectively shutdown, all public transport
:18:53. > :18:55.within Munich or within the Centre has been effectively stopped. With
:18:56. > :19:01.the underground is closed and with buses grounding to Horton passengers
:19:02. > :19:05.told to get out and walk home, effectively. Police have issued
:19:06. > :19:10.warnings for local residents to stay at home. And to get off the streets.
:19:11. > :19:16.So, obviously, these are taking it extremely seriously indeed. --
:19:17. > :19:20.police are taking it. There are reports that one of the perpetrators
:19:21. > :19:27.shot wildly in a cafe or they can read and then fled the scene. And
:19:28. > :19:35.some people said the perpetrator has not been caught. The question is, is
:19:36. > :19:41.there a gunmen on the loose? Munich police say they suspect this
:19:42. > :19:47.is a terrorist attack? Yes, and that is the big fear, of
:19:48. > :19:54.course. What we have seen on Monday was an asylum seeker who attacked
:19:55. > :19:58.five people or seriously injured five people and attacks more than
:19:59. > :20:02.that in a train. It was a brutal attack with an axe and a knife and
:20:03. > :20:08.it turned out that he in fact was an Islamist extremist who had links to
:20:09. > :20:14.so-called Islamic State. And that has been the worry, that attacks are
:20:15. > :20:19.caused by Islamist extremists rather than lone wolves of random people
:20:20. > :20:23.who might be in some way disturbed. And that is the fear in this
:20:24. > :20:28.particular case as well because, as you know across Europe, we have had
:20:29. > :20:31.various Islamist extreme as attacks. Very varied in nature with very
:20:32. > :20:35.little in common. Numerous attacks in France in the past year and that
:20:36. > :20:39.is now the worry in Germany that this is starting to happen here
:20:40. > :20:42.because for a long time now people have been very nervous that a
:20:43. > :20:46.similar sort of attack such as the ones we have been seeing in France
:20:47. > :20:50.will happen in Germany. We saw it on Monday on a lower level, if you
:20:51. > :20:54.like. And that is the worry now, that if this turns out to be an
:20:55. > :20:59.Islamist excuse attack, then that would seriously rattle people here
:21:00. > :21:03.in Germany. This choice of target. A shopping
:21:04. > :21:07.centre, Friday afternoon, really busy. No real defences security
:21:08. > :21:13.specifically to stop something like this. Really, one of the softest
:21:14. > :21:18.kinds of targets. Yes, that is right. I do think that
:21:19. > :21:22.is the whole worry about all these individual attacks, because they are
:21:23. > :21:25.also different in nature. We saw it in Nice, and that was a completely
:21:26. > :21:30.different sort of attack. We saw the train attack on Monday. Here in
:21:31. > :21:38.Bavaria as well, not far from Munich. And it seems that a lot of
:21:39. > :21:42.these attacks are the ones that seem impossible to predict and impossible
:21:43. > :21:46.to prevent and officials here and in Britain have said there is only so
:21:47. > :21:51.much security you can provide because the problem is that if the
:21:52. > :21:54.attacker is someone operating on their own, then it is really hard to
:21:55. > :22:01.know how you can prevent that. With the attacker who launched that
:22:02. > :22:05.attack on the train, in Bavaria on Monday, the problem there was he was
:22:06. > :22:09.completely unknown by the authorities. The have not committed
:22:10. > :22:12.any crime before. The authorities had no connections with them and the
:22:13. > :22:17.police had not had any reason to suspect that he might have links to
:22:18. > :22:21.so-called Islamic State and that is the issue, really. That there are so
:22:22. > :22:25.many cases where these attackers are just not known to the police
:22:26. > :22:28.already. And in that case it is almost impossible to predict or
:22:29. > :22:38.prevent. For the moment, thank you very much.
:22:39. > :22:40.A short time ago a police report of Bavarian radio in Munich explained
:22:41. > :22:52.what was happening at the scene when she arrived.
:22:53. > :22:57.Unfortunately we could not get very close to the shopping centre as
:22:58. > :23:02.everything has totally closed down. We tried to get there. We had that
:23:03. > :23:09.there were people screaming, running out of the shopping centre because
:23:10. > :23:17.there was one or the police now told us there are apparently more than
:23:18. > :23:23.one person involved. And there was a shooting right at the shopping
:23:24. > :23:29.centre and abortion the, we could not get very close. -- and
:23:30. > :23:33.unfortunately, we could not get very close.
:23:34. > :23:40.What sort of police presence did you see?
:23:41. > :23:44.The strongest one can imagine. In the case as this one, where there
:23:45. > :23:49.has been a shooting at a really large shopping centre and maybe as
:23:50. > :23:53.well at other places in Munich, we're not sure about that as there
:23:54. > :23:58.is no official report. As you can imagine, all the police forces and
:23:59. > :24:01.special forces, helicopters, or the police forces are at the shopping
:24:02. > :24:05.centre and in Munich and the official places as well. And they
:24:06. > :24:08.are calling out that no one is allowed to go to the official places
:24:09. > :24:11.they're trying to close everything down because they do not know
:24:12. > :24:18.whether those present that in doing the shooting is the moment.
:24:19. > :24:22.We're just hearing via the news agency, they are quoting German TV,
:24:23. > :24:29.saying that the Bavarian into rear Ministry has confirmed that three
:24:30. > :24:33.people died. -- Interior Ministry. This is coming to us for pound but
:24:34. > :24:38.that is the suggestion here from the Bavarian interior ministry that
:24:39. > :24:43.there have been three fatalities. When you were at the scene, how many
:24:44. > :24:45.people were around? We understand they are still trying to evacuate

:25:44. > :25:47.of screaming and people running around but most of the people should
:25:48. > :25:57.be evacuated by now but as we cannot get in and cannot get close to the
:25:58. > :26:00.scene we're not sure right now. Munich police are now saying that
:26:01. > :26:03.they suspect that they are announced seeing a terror attack unfolding in
