:00:07. > :00:12.Hello this is BBC world news, broadcasting in the UK and around

:00:13. > :00:18.the world. The leader of the so-called Islamic State is being

:00:19. > :00:28.held in a US joint strike. He was killed in Afghanistan. Tension over

:00:29. > :00:33.Crimea. The Russian Prime Minister threatens to break diplomatic ties

:00:34. > :00:38.with Kiev. The French Riviera resort vans women from wearing full body

:00:39. > :00:45.swimsuits, the burkinis, on its beaches. And this action gets under

:00:46. > :00:46.way at the Olympics, the 10,000 metre world record is beaten by this

:00:47. > :01:09.utopian runner. -- Ethiopian runner. A warm welcome. A senior US defence

:01:10. > :01:13.official has confirmed that the leader of so-called Islamic State in

:01:14. > :01:20.Pakistan and Afghanistan has been killed in a drone strike. He led his

:01:21. > :01:25.group of hardliners to launch a series of deadly strikes in

:01:26. > :01:31.Afghanistan. He was a former Taliban fighter. Our correspondent is in

:01:32. > :01:35.Washington. What more do we know? Not a lot. There are some reports

:01:36. > :01:43.for towing a boat about his death, mostly coming from Afghan diplomatic

:01:44. > :01:48.sources in Pakistan. We spoke to the Pentagon a few moments ago and they

:01:49. > :01:55.confirmed this joint strike on the 22nd of July and they believed that

:01:56. > :01:59.he was killed. -- confirmed this drone strike. They will not go one

:02:00. > :02:04.the record that the Mormon which means that they may not be entirely

:02:05. > :02:09.sure. There is a note of caution here which is that he has been

:02:10. > :02:14.allegedly killed a couple of times before, particularly in July last

:02:15. > :02:18.year. That can be some uncertainty around these things but there seems

:02:19. > :02:25.to be a reasonable amount of clarity that he is dead. The Afghan

:02:26. > :02:27.ambassador to Pakistan said that he believed a number of other

:02:28. > :02:36.commanders were killed at the same time. I am sure that they will be

:02:37. > :02:43.tapping into the human intelligence sources out there, trying to confirm

:02:44. > :02:50.if there is more activity around now to try and confirmed that he is

:02:51. > :02:56.dead. What is the situation in Afghanistan

:02:57. > :03:02.at the moment with regards to ISO? They have been starting to conduct

:03:03. > :03:11.some operations in Afghanistan, there was an attack in Kabul last

:03:12. > :03:17.month in which they bombed a protest and the killed 80 people in that

:03:18. > :03:22.attack. They also claimed responsibility for the attack on a

:03:23. > :03:30.hospital in Pakistan earlier this week, although that is disputed.

:03:31. > :03:34.There is some concern that IAS was organising and getting some people

:03:35. > :03:40.from the Taliban in that area and conducting terror attacks, not just

:03:41. > :03:47.in couple but in Pakistan as well. -- concern that IAS. The Americans

:03:48. > :03:57.have already said that they have killed a number of ISO fighters in

:03:58. > :04:03.Pakistan and the mission is to support the forces, although they

:04:04. > :04:11.have the right to go after terror targets thank you.

:04:12. > :04:15.All week tensions have been building between Russia and Ukraine. Now the

:04:16. > :04:19.Russian Prime Minister has threatened to break diplomatic ties

:04:20. > :04:24.with Kiev. The situation was not helped by the Russian military

:04:25. > :04:31.saying they had deliberately missiles to Crimea. Russia says that

:04:32. > :04:36.the delivery of the missile system had been agreed last month. It is

:04:37. > :04:40.accusing Ukraine of sending saboteurs into Crimea and reported

:04:41. > :04:47.the deaths of two people in an attempt foiled plot. Ukraine the

:04:48. > :04:55.lies -- Ukraine denies the allegations. We were joined in the

:04:56. > :04:59.studio to discuss this recently. Controversy broke out when the plans

:05:00. > :05:04.were announced last month but in light of the ratcheting up of

:05:05. > :05:12.tension between Ukraine and Russia over alleged movement of officers in

:05:13. > :05:19.Crimea makes it a very ominous time for this deployment. Ukraine will be

:05:20. > :05:25.worried that the range of these S 400 missile systems is considerably

:05:26. > :05:30.larger than anything seen in Crimea before and because Crimea is a pin

:05:31. > :05:36.in Schiller in the Black Sea, the range of S 400 missiles will be

:05:37. > :05:45.covering the whole of the Black Sea and that includes the coastal areas

:05:46. > :05:56.of Turkey and other countries. It is worth mentioning that Russia now has

:05:57. > :06:02.an interest in that area and protecting what it annexed. Exactly.

:06:03. > :06:07.Russia has been dating in in Crimea and militarising it and that has

:06:08. > :06:11.been the allegation from Ukraine all along, but Russia is turning the

:06:12. > :06:21.Crimean peninsula which it illegally annexed, according to tears and

:06:22. > :06:28.other United Nations members, and according to Ukraine and its allies

:06:29. > :06:38.in the West they are militarising Crimea and making it next to

:06:39. > :06:42.impossible to be reoccupied by Kiev. The situation and Ukraine has not

:06:43. > :06:47.been in the news as prominently as it is today for quite some time.

:06:48. > :06:54.Where are we up to in times of the situation with the breakaway regions

:06:55. > :06:58.and the conflict there. Just because the incident was not in the major

:06:59. > :07:05.headlines does not mean that there was not a daily stream of this and

:07:06. > :07:12.Ukraine. July turned out to be one of the quietest months since the

:07:13. > :07:19.Minsk peace agreement was signed in February. One of the dangers for the

:07:20. > :07:21.future with regards to the current escalation is the statement by

:07:22. > :07:30.President Putin that he withdraws unilaterally from the peaceful

:07:31. > :07:34.negotiations, which means that any platform for negotiating some kind

:07:35. > :07:46.of a settlement in the east of Ukraine will lose its validity and.

:07:47. > :07:51.Being efficient and effective. In another political development, one

:07:52. > :07:56.of the most powerful men in the Kremlin is standing down. He is

:07:57. > :08:00.leaving his post to become a special representative for environmental and

:08:01. > :08:04.transport issues. What do we know about the man that has been

:08:05. > :08:08.described as one of President Putin's closest alleys. The

:08:09. > :08:13.63-year-old has been part of President Putin's inner circle for

:08:14. > :08:17.many years, with the president once naming him is one of the people he

:08:18. > :08:25.trusted most. Before becoming chief of staff in 2011, Ivanov served as

:08:26. > :08:34.Deputy Prime Minister and defence Minister. He is a Security Council

:08:35. > :08:43.member and a former KGB member. Did he choose to resign or was he

:08:44. > :08:49.pushed? This is a surprising move by a president who likes to surprise.

:08:50. > :08:53.No one was expecting this and people have been racking their brains today

:08:54. > :08:59.in Moscow to try and understand what is behind it and the possible

:09:00. > :09:04.motives. He was a very close friend and long-held friend and ally of

:09:05. > :09:09.President Putin, now he is losing his job. Officially speaking it is

:09:10. > :09:15.his initiative, but him and Mr Putin was shown on state television today

:09:16. > :09:24.and Mr Putin said that Ivanov had is to step down. Mr Putin was agreeing

:09:25. > :09:28.that after years of long service he could no leave the presidential

:09:29. > :09:34.administration. I think there is scepticism about that here. This is

:09:35. > :09:38.a man in a very senior job in the Kremlin and we are supposed to

:09:39. > :09:44.believe that he wanted to become the envoy for environmental affairs. The

:09:45. > :09:48.question is, what is behind this? At the moment there is speculation and

:09:49. > :09:54.some people are suggesting that Mr Putin is looking to the 2018

:09:55. > :09:58.presidential elections and he wants effective managers rather than

:09:59. > :10:02.friends to be around him. Other people are suggesting he wants a

:10:03. > :10:10.younger team as he is now in his mid-60s. Perhaps he was a younger

:10:11. > :10:13.team to project the right image for those presidential elections. But

:10:14. > :10:20.this is speculation and no one knows what is going on behind the walls of

:10:21. > :10:23.the Kremlin. The Democratic nominee for the US presidential election,

:10:24. > :10:28.Hillary Clinton, has disclosed her latest tax return. Meanwhile, Donald

:10:29. > :10:34.Trump has said that his tax affairs are undergoing an official audit and

:10:35. > :10:37.he cannot disclose the figures until the review has completed. The

:10:38. > :10:43.internal revenue service says that he can. Hillary Clinton and her

:10:44. > :10:50.husband and template six billion dollars with federal taxes of just

:10:51. > :10:54.over 34%. To listen Thailand are being warned to be cautious after

:10:55. > :10:59.the wave of bombings killed four people and injured dozens of others.

:11:00. > :11:06.11 blasts hit cities and resorts across the South. Police have ruled

:11:07. > :11:08.out international terrorism, but the coordination could suggest the

:11:09. > :11:13.involvement of the separatist movement that has killed 6500 people

:11:14. > :11:21.in the last 12 years. Our Thailand correspondent reports.

:11:22. > :11:30.The bombs were small and for those nearby they were deadly. This was a

:11:31. > :11:34.sedate seaside resort that is popular with retired people from

:11:35. > :11:39.Europe. Two explosions shook the town centre on a busy Thursday

:11:40. > :11:44.evening before a long weekend. I was sitting with my friends on holiday

:11:45. > :11:48.from the UK. We were having a good time and the music was loud. All of

:11:49. > :11:58.a sudden there was a commotion and we went around the corner and people

:11:59. > :12:06.were shouting bomb, bomb. The the scenes were chaotic. Eight to ten

:12:07. > :12:12.bodies on the floor. This was not the only part of the country being

:12:13. > :12:20.attacked. On this holiday island 11 blasts in five provinces. Who was

:12:21. > :12:25.responsible? The type we say it is too soon to speculate that they

:12:26. > :12:30.insist this was not terrorism. They are describing it as domestic

:12:31. > :12:35.sabotage. And operation of this skill hints at an experienced group

:12:36. > :12:39.making a political point. Perhaps the separatist to have been fighting

:12:40. > :12:43.the Thai army and the south, or groups out to embarrass the military

:12:44. > :12:48.government. They are quiet here on the road of what should be one of

:12:49. > :12:53.the busiest holiday weekends of the year is a very worrying sign for the

:12:54. > :12:57.Thai government because more than at any other time this country depends

:12:58. > :13:03.on tourism for its economy and that is exactly what the bombers were

:13:04. > :13:08.targeting. The Tudors industry has proved remarkably resilient here for

:13:09. > :13:12.three decades and it will probably bounce back again. That may depend

:13:13. > :13:16.on how well the tire Daugherty 's investigate these attacks and if

:13:17. > :13:23.they can prevent any more from happening. -- how well the Thai

:13:24. > :13:29.authorities investigate. You are watching BBC News. Still to come: A

:13:30. > :13:40.world record in the women's 1000 metres on the track in real generic.

:13:41. > :13:43.Here in Britain Labour's national executive committee has won the

:13:44. > :13:48.right to stop new members from voting in a leadership election. It

:13:49. > :13:50.will prevent 130,000 new members voting in the leadership election

:13:51. > :13:55.between Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith. The Shadow Chancellor and

:13:56. > :13:58.Corbin supporter John McDonnell is angry and says that what has

:13:59. > :14:02.happened fighting the face of democracy. The Court of Appeal

:14:03. > :14:08.ruling overturns the High Court ruling that was taken earlier this

:14:09. > :14:12.week. A serial killer known as the Yorkshire Ripper is expected to be

:14:13. > :14:17.transferred from a psychiatric hospital to a prison in the next few

:14:18. > :14:22.weeks. BBC News understands that a tribunal has decided he no longer

:14:23. > :14:26.needs treatment for any mental health disorder. Moving him would

:14:27. > :14:32.need to be approved by the Ministry of Justice and it would save a

:14:33. > :14:41.quarter of a year. He murdered 13 women and attempted to murder seven

:14:42. > :14:45.more between 1976 and 1981. This is BBC world news today. These

:14:46. > :14:54.are the headlines: The leader of the so-called Islamic State and

:14:55. > :14:59.so-called Islamic State in Pakistan and Afghanistan has been killed. A

:15:00. > :15:06.threat to break diplomatic ties between Russia and Kiev.

:15:07. > :15:11.Controversy is brewing in the French city of Canberra Daugherty 's have

:15:12. > :15:17.banned the burkinis, a full body swimsuit one by Muslims. The mayor

:15:18. > :15:21.says it is a security risk and any clothing displaying religious

:15:22. > :15:25.affiliation could the shot public order during a time in France is

:15:26. > :15:33.being targeted by terrorists. What do beach-goers think? TRANSLATION: I

:15:34. > :15:37.am a regionally from Egypt and I grew up with people wearing Islamic

:15:38. > :15:43.dress and I am shocked to find this in Paris. They should not wear

:15:44. > :15:51.Islamic close. We have freedom here. We need to respect the society we

:15:52. > :15:54.live in. I agree with the mayor because the burkini can be used to

:15:55. > :16:01.disguise themselves as they want to carry out a terror attack. Boot-mac

:16:02. > :16:06.I think they're wearing a burkini is not illegal and everyone has a right

:16:07. > :16:11.to access the beach because it is a public space, but if we think about

:16:12. > :16:18.women's rights it is a regression for women, especially for

:16:19. > :16:22.Frenchwoman who are quite free. I think the mayor did this to avoid

:16:23. > :16:27.provocations on the beach that could cause violence or pointless

:16:28. > :16:36.discussions, because some are against and some are in favour. For

:16:37. > :16:39.more reaction I spoke to our correspondent in Paris. She says it

:16:40. > :16:43.is making headlines and dividing opinion.

:16:44. > :16:48.Many people are saying the move is a populist measure by a Republican

:16:49. > :16:56.politician. When you speak to the Muslim community, it was divided.

:16:57. > :17:02.Some people were saying that France is a tolerant place and there should

:17:03. > :17:08.be knowing Schmidt of human rights and they are against the move by the

:17:09. > :17:12.mayor. Others point to the fact that France has got a proud history of

:17:13. > :17:18.secularism and people should not be displaying their religious affinity.

:17:19. > :17:27.That is what the mayor has been arguing, the ostentatious use of

:17:28. > :17:32.religious affinity is what he is objecting to. He has singled out the

:17:33. > :17:39.burkini for that. Why has this come to light now? This

:17:40. > :17:45.came into force at the end of July. Has anyone been fined?

:17:46. > :17:50.Not that we are aware of and the controversy here is that people are

:17:51. > :17:58.saying you are more likely to see people wearing a tiny bikini dandy

:17:59. > :18:04.fool burkini, so people are saying this might be a false debates.

:18:05. > :18:08.Others say it may played straight into the hands of extremists at a

:18:09. > :18:14.time when France does not need this. It comes at a time of high tension.

:18:15. > :18:20.Last month there was a terrible attack in Nice and 85 people were

:18:21. > :18:25.killed. So-called Islamic State claiming responsibility for that.

:18:26. > :18:30.Then in Normandy we had the elderly priest that was killed by two men

:18:31. > :18:35.who were on a list of wanted people here in France.

:18:36. > :18:40.Time for some sport news now and Ollie Foster has the latest from day

:18:41. > :18:45.seven of the Rio Olympics. It is the seventh day of competition

:18:46. > :18:51.at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. 24 golds to be one. One was secured

:18:52. > :18:58.with the world record on the first day of the athletics in the 10,000

:18:59. > :19:06.metres. This Ethiopian runner beat a 23-year-old record by 14 seconds,

:19:07. > :19:13.storming the whole. The defending champion also from Ethiopia was the

:19:14. > :19:18.bronze medallist. There were 18 personal bests in that race which

:19:19. > :19:24.was very quick. She becomes the first woman to break a 10,000 metre

:19:25. > :19:28.world record at an Olympic Games. Great Britain are up to fourth in

:19:29. > :19:37.the medal table after two goals in 20 minutes and rowing. They came

:19:38. > :19:43.from the two strongest boats. The men's for defended their title from

:19:44. > :19:52.London. They have won every Olympics in Sydney to thousands. Five in a

:19:53. > :20:03.row. In the women's pair, they were unbeaten for five years. It means so

:20:04. > :20:07.much more. We have had a lot of pressure. I have been so emotional

:20:08. > :20:15.and this is not me at all. It means so much to us. There is nothing more

:20:16. > :20:23.special than home games but this is defending a title. We have managed

:20:24. > :20:34.to when every race for the last four years. We put an end is pressure on

:20:35. > :20:38.ourselves. We are dying inside. The Polish 2012 weightlifting champion

:20:39. > :20:48.has joined his brother in being sent home from the games after testing

:20:49. > :20:53.positive. He failed a drugs test that the Polish Championships last

:20:54. > :20:58.month. The Polish weightlifting Federation says that he has a legal

:20:59. > :21:05.right to be retested. His brother was sent home on Tuesday.

:21:06. > :21:11.Away from the Olympics the Premier League returns on Saturday.

:21:12. > :21:14.Leicester get things underway with the kick-off against newly promoted

:21:15. > :21:20.Hull City, who still do not have a full-time manager. Pep Guardiola for

:21:21. > :21:26.managers first game at home to Sunderland, who also have a new

:21:27. > :21:31.manager in David Moyes. Manchester United are away at Bournemouth under

:21:32. > :21:35.Jose Mourinho. No Pol Pot bar for United, who has a one-game ban that

:21:36. > :21:42.has been carried over to England. Leicester get things going. They

:21:43. > :21:51.have held onto most of their title winning score, but surely they

:21:52. > :21:58.cannot do it again. I think the bookmakers have it at 6000-1,

:21:59. > :22:13.because it is impossible. It is more difficult than last season. It is

:22:14. > :22:19.more likely that ET comes. One of the greatest baseball stars is due

:22:20. > :22:25.to play his last game. Alex Drake use of the New York Yankees scored

:22:26. > :22:30.home runs. This will be his last game before a coaching role beckons.

:22:31. > :22:37.He admitted to steroid abuse a decade ago and he was banned for the

:22:38. > :22:43.entire 2014 season for his part in a doping scandal. Mixed memories of

:22:44. > :22:51.his career in baseball. That is all the sport for now.

:22:52. > :22:59.Two of the best ballet dancers in the world have been can care to

:23:00. > :23:03.Margaret Fonteyn. They will be performing together at the Edinburgh

:23:04. > :23:13.International Festival and are at Edinburgh has been to meet them.

:23:14. > :23:17.Here they are in rehearsals, putting themselves through paces for

:23:18. > :23:29.tonight's Edinburgh International Festival show. They are partners

:23:30. > :23:34.onstage and off. TRANSLATION: You are 200% together. There is no

:23:35. > :23:40.better partner than surrogate because I admire him as an artist

:23:41. > :23:50.and love him as a person. Who is the boss? TRANSLATION: I believe the man

:23:51. > :23:55.should be a leader but he should let a woman do what he wants. It is an

:23:56. > :24:03.emotion that makes it interesting to do the show. The audience know if we

:24:04. > :24:16.have been fighting before or if we are in a good moments. You are naked

:24:17. > :24:23.on stage. Both of them field dance Scott back -- both of them fielded

:24:24. > :24:33.dancers get a hard time keeping to other sports professionals. I feel

:24:34. > :24:38.like they treat dancers like children, they do not ask questions

:24:39. > :24:46.or treat them like artists. They are just soldiers who do the work while

:24:47. > :24:49.an artist needs to create. You became so disenchanted with the

:24:50. > :24:54.profession that he walked out of his job as the principal dancer at the

:24:55. > :25:04.Royal Ballet in 2012. I fell into the darkness and I kept falling

:25:05. > :25:10.down. I think I hit rock bottom and met the devil. Is the ambition to go

:25:11. > :25:17.back? I would love to go back and dance with the Royal Ballet. We are

:25:18. > :25:24.having talks. Right now he has a job to do, dancing with his partner in

:25:25. > :25:28.this production. Before we go a reminder of our main

:25:29. > :25:32.news. A senior US defence official has confirmed that the leader of the

:25:33. > :25:35.so-called Islamic State in Afghanistan Pakistan has been killed

:25:36. > :25:41.in a drone strike. It is understood that he was killed in eastern Afghan

:25:42. > :25:47.province. He had led his group of militants to launch a number of

:25:48. > :25:52.deadly strikes inside Afghanistan. You can get in touch with me and

:25:53. > :25:55.most of the team here on Twitter. That is all from the programme.

:25:56. > :26:12.Thank you for watching. Goodbye. We can look at some of the bigger

:26:13. > :26:16.weather stories around the world. There is a lot of cloud over the

:26:17. > :26:17.Pacific
