:01:05. > :01:07.The transport minister says investigators aren't ruling out -

:01:08. > :01:10.any possible reasons for the crash - that includes terrorism.

:01:11. > :01:16.Among those on board were members of the famous Red Army Choir.

:01:17. > :01:18.Vigils have been held, this one at the Os-tan-kino TV

:01:19. > :01:20.station to remember the nine journalists who were

:01:21. > :01:24.The authorities say the location of the wreckage has been pinpointed,

:01:25. > :01:27.and more than a hundred divers were exploring the sea bed.

:01:28. > :01:29.So far, eleven bodies have been recovered.

:01:30. > :01:35.This is one of the final images of the Tupolev-154 jet.

:01:36. > :01:38.It was taken by a journalist before he boarded the plane.

:01:39. > :01:45.The aircraft crashed into the Black Sea.

:01:46. > :01:47.The Russians scrambled helicopters and ships but the search became

:01:48. > :01:56.The plane had taken off from a military airfield near Moscow.

:01:57. > :02:00.It flew south, stopping in Sochi to refuel.

:02:01. > :02:02.The final destination was Syria, and Russia's airbase near Latakia,

:02:03. > :02:04.but minutes after leaving Sochi, it crashed.

:02:05. > :02:07.At the Russian Defence Ministry, a spokesman said that more than 90

:02:08. > :02:13.He said the recovery operation was continuing.

:02:14. > :02:18.On board were more than 60 members of the Russian army's famous

:02:19. > :02:22.song and dance ensemble, once known as the Red Army Choir.

:02:23. > :02:26.They had been due to give a concert at the Russian airbase in Syria.

:02:27. > :02:28.Most civilian airlines have stopped using the Tupolev-154,

:02:29. > :02:29.once the workhorse of the Russian aviation industry.

:02:30. > :02:33.In 2010, a Tupolev-154 carrying the Polish President crashed

:02:34. > :02:37.The following year, a similar plane caught fire

:02:38. > :02:44.Now the investigation begins into another disaster,

:02:45. > :03:05.to find out why this Russian plane fell from the sky into the sea.

:03:06. > :03:14.People in Moscow brought flowers to the headquarters of the Russian Army

:03:15. > :03:17.choir. It has left Russia stunned and silo. The Kremlin has promised a

:03:18. > :03:19.thorough investigation into this tragedy. It has also declared Monday

:03:20. > :03:21.to be a day of national mourning. Olga Ivshina of the BBC's

:03:22. > :03:26.Russian Service told me more about those

:03:27. > :03:45.on They are trying to find black boxes

:03:46. > :03:50.to see if this will shed light on the probable reasons for the crash.

:03:51. > :03:54.We don't really know what happened so far. The recording of

:03:55. > :03:58.conversation between the aeroplane and the base was published, but it

:03:59. > :04:02.sounds like a routine check their voices are calm and there is no sign

:04:03. > :04:07.of alarm warning, which probably means it happened quite abruptly.

:04:08. > :04:11.But the investigators have not ruled out every possibility here? Bred

:04:12. > :04:15.yes, the Russian transport minister said they are looking into all

:04:16. > :04:20.versions and there are three versions which is quite as usual.

:04:21. > :04:25.Technical failure, a mistake on the pilot's part a something else,

:04:26. > :04:30.possibly a terror attack. They did not specify which is the priority

:04:31. > :04:34.one, so they are looking at all possible versions. If we look to

:04:35. > :04:38.those on board who sadly perished in the crash, they were journalists

:04:39. > :04:43.covering the red Army choir travelling to Syria to perform. The

:04:44. > :04:53.majority of the people on board were members of the red Army choir who

:04:54. > :04:59.are members of the military and actually this was quite a

:05:00. > :05:03.significant thing, so they lost one third of their members and most of

:05:04. > :05:09.the members of the choir. They were well known and well respected and

:05:10. > :05:11.loved in Russia. They were respected all over the world for their

:05:12. > :05:16.professionalism and well performing a lot in Russia and the Russian

:05:17. > :05:20.military bases in the country and abroad, boosting military spirit and

:05:21. > :05:26.also giving concerts in other countries. Their image became more

:05:27. > :05:32.controversial since 2014, because being a member of the Russian army,

:05:33. > :05:35.they praised the actions of Russian soldiers during a annexation of

:05:36. > :05:40.Crimea and some politicians in eastern Europe said they must

:05:41. > :05:45.boycott it, but it did not happen. They kept performing. Once again,

:05:46. > :05:54.they were well known and recognised for their professionalism as

:05:55. > :05:58.artists. We have seen some rituals in Rush already, come with them all?

:05:59. > :06:05.Bred Monday will be a day of national mourning Russian state has

:06:06. > :06:09.changes programmes buggy programmes are nothing like this. Many

:06:10. > :06:21.Muscovites are shocked and coming to the base of the red Army choir are

:06:22. > :06:25.bringing candles. The famous Russian doctor was on the plane are bringing

:06:26. > :06:31.some humanitarian aid for Syrian hospitals. She was really respected

:06:32. > :06:36.and loved by many Russian because she was helping people in need,

:06:37. > :06:40.homeless people, children. She was also involved in some minor

:06:41. > :06:45.controversies, but so humanitarian efforts was widely recognised. It

:06:46. > :06:50.seems that people were not expecting this to come, it was a huge shock

:06:51. > :06:51.coming just before days of celebration, just before the New

:06:52. > :06:53.Year which is a big deal in Russia. And you can get more details

:06:54. > :06:55.on the crash and hear some of the music from the Red Army Choir

:06:59. > :07:01.app on your smartphone The Israeli leader

:07:02. > :07:08.Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered his Foreign Ministry

:07:09. > :07:11.to summon and reprimand ambassadors from countries on the United

:07:12. > :07:13.Nations Security Council, The move is a response to the UN

:07:14. > :07:18.vote on Friday that condemned Israel's building of Jewish

:07:19. > :07:50.settlements in the American and Israeli governments

:07:51. > :07:55.have disagreed about settlers, but we grew the Security Council was not

:07:56. > :07:58.the place to resolve this solution. We knew that going there would make

:07:59. > :08:09.negotiations harder and dry these further away.

:08:10. > :08:14.Front do not take offence to the Security Council. I'm encouraged by

:08:15. > :08:17.the statements of Republicans and Democrats alike in the United

:08:18. > :08:23.States. They understand how reckless and destructive the resolution was

:08:24. > :08:29.that they understand the Western Wall is not occupied territory. I

:08:30. > :08:31.look forward to working with those front and with the new

:08:32. > :08:34.administration when it takes office next month. That was Benjamin

:08:35. > :08:35.Netanyahu. Earlier the BBC's Middle East

:08:36. > :08:46.analyst Alan Johnston explained This was a big moment at the United

:08:47. > :08:51.Nations on Friday. Real diplomatic drama. Year after year we've watched

:08:52. > :08:57.the Americans use their veto to protect Israel against resolutions

:08:58. > :09:00.of this kind, but not this time. Suddenly, the Israelis found

:09:01. > :09:05.themselves without a friend in the world on that very important

:09:06. > :09:08.diplomatic stage and the message that the international community

:09:09. > :09:12.centre could hardly have been stronger. It condemned the Israeli

:09:13. > :09:18.settlement building project in the occupied territories as a legal and

:09:19. > :09:22.a flagrant violation of international law. Now, the Israelis

:09:23. > :09:26.see the legal position entirely different layout will not accept

:09:27. > :09:29.that verdict for one moment. They argue that they are endlessly

:09:30. > :09:35.mistreated by the UN in which they say is biased against Israel again

:09:36. > :09:40.and again. They are now on a major diplomatic offensive and they are

:09:41. > :09:45.reprimanding -- the reprimanding of the ambassadors on Christmas Day.

:09:46. > :09:49.Benjamin Netanyahu has the UN itself in his sights and has ordered a

:09:50. > :09:56.review of his country's relations with the world body and some funding

:09:57. > :10:01.will be cut to some of its agencies. One of the smaller countries behind

:10:02. > :10:05.the moving of the resolution, Senegal, has felt Israel's Raff in

:10:06. > :10:10.the funding and economic aid projects which have been cut. Israel

:10:11. > :10:10.are showing that they are diplomatically and economically

:10:11. > :10:14.hitting back. Fake news has hit the headlines

:10:15. > :10:17.a lot recently - it's been blamed for influencing the US election

:10:18. > :10:20.and even led to an attack Now it appears it has caused

:10:21. > :10:23.diplomatic twitter tension Pakistan's defence minister

:10:24. > :10:27.Khawaja Asif directed a tweet at Israel believing it had

:10:28. > :10:28.threatened Pakistan with a nuclear attack

:10:29. > :10:31.for its role in Syrian conflict. He tweeted that 'Israel should not

:10:32. > :10:33.forget that Pakistan But the story at the heart

:10:34. > :10:39.of all this, was, in fact - fake. Israel's Defence Ministry -

:10:40. > :10:41.which maintains a position of nuclear ambiguity -

:10:42. > :10:44.tweeted back to say the article Evacuations have been taking place

:10:45. > :10:56.in Chile after a powerful earthquake The US Geological Survey says

:10:57. > :11:06.the quake struck southwest The first readings indicated

:11:07. > :11:09.a seven-point-seven magnitude - but that's since been

:11:10. > :11:11.revised down. In Nigeria, to people were killed

:11:12. > :11:14.when a section of a two-storey building in a police

:11:15. > :11:15.training college collapsed. The collapse in Lagos

:11:16. > :11:17.happened around 4am. Building collapses are frequent

:11:18. > :11:19.in Nigeria and they are often blamed by officials on the use

:11:20. > :11:21.of cheap materials. Earlier, in December,

:11:22. > :11:24.more than 100 people were killed when a church collapsed

:11:25. > :11:29.in the south-east of the country. German police have defused

:11:30. > :11:32.a World War to bomb that caused the evacuation of more than 50

:11:33. > :11:39.thousand residents of Residents of the southern German

:11:40. > :11:41.city had been forced to leave their homes

:11:42. > :11:43.on Christmas Day so that the huge This was the biggest evacuation

:11:44. > :11:47.in Germany for an unexploded bomb Church leaders have used

:11:48. > :12:01.their Christmas messages to reflect on the emotional impact of global

:12:02. > :12:03.events this year. Pope Francis called

:12:04. > :12:05.for an end to the fighting in Syria when he spoke

:12:06. > :12:07.at the Vatican on Sunday. He said "far too much blood has been

:12:08. > :12:13.spilled" in the conflict. Meanwhile the Anglican leader --

:12:14. > :12:15.The Archbishop of Canterbury -- Justin Welby, told his congregation

:12:16. > :12:18.that the end of the year leaves people - in a more

:12:19. > :12:20.unpredictable world. Our Religious Affairs Correspondent

:12:21. > :12:24.Martin Bashir reports. Entering Canterbury Cathedral

:12:25. > :12:26.in time-honoured fashion, Archbishop Justin Welby

:12:27. > :12:28.focused his Christmas Day sermon on the uncertainty and division that

:12:29. > :12:31.has marked both domestic and international politics

:12:32. > :12:34.over the last year. He described 2016 as a year

:12:35. > :12:37.of unpredictability and uncertainty, where fear and division

:12:38. > :12:39.were in danger of overwhelming us and went on to suggest

:12:40. > :12:42.that our anxiety is a clear sign that placing our trust in material

:12:43. > :12:54.prosperity has failed. In Rome, where additional

:12:55. > :12:57.security was in place following the Berlin attack,

:12:58. > :13:00.Pope Francis also criticised materialism, and appealed

:13:01. > :13:31.to Christians to stand out as people TRANSLATION: It is times for weapons

:13:32. > :13:36.to be a silver of an international community to actively seek a

:13:37. > :13:42.negotiated solution so that civil coexistence can be restored in the

:13:43. > :13:45.country. Why might be the Pope concluded by appealing for

:13:46. > :14:02.Christians to stand out as people of compassion and self-sacrifice.

:14:03. > :14:04.The Queen misses her traditional Christmas Day service

:14:05. > :14:07.as she recovers from a heavy cold - but in a recorded speech she pays

:14:08. > :15:04.tribute to "ordinary people doing extraordinary things".

:15:05. > :15:08.Thousands went to midnight mass where there were anti-Communist

:15:09. > :15:25.riots ten days ago. The latest headlines: Russia looks

:15:26. > :15:30.for answers after a military plane with 92 people aboard crushers. The

:15:31. > :15:33.day of mourning has begun. Venturing met in Yahoo as ordered ambassadors

:15:34. > :15:36.of the UN Security Council to be reprimanded after they voted to

:15:37. > :15:39.condemn Israel's settlement building.

:15:40. > :15:41.The Queen misses her traditional Christmas Day service

:15:42. > :15:44.as she recovers from a heavy cold - but in a recorded speech she pays

:15:45. > :15:48.tribute to "ordinary people doing extraordinary things".

:15:49. > :15:50.In her pre-recorded Christmas message, the Queen said she often

:15:51. > :15:52.draws strength from meeting ordinary people, doing extraordinary things.

:15:53. > :16:26.Our Royal correspondent, Nicholas Witchell, reports.

:16:27. > :16:32.Also absent issue the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their

:16:33. > :16:35.children at Charlotte. They attended church at Bucklebury in Berkshire

:16:36. > :16:45.where they have spent Christmas Day with the Duchess's family, the

:16:46. > :16:50.Middleton 's. Inspiration was the theme of this year's Christmas

:16:51. > :16:54.broadcast by the Queen which was recorded at Buckingham Palace days

:16:55. > :17:00.ago. She cited the achievements of Olympic athletes and said she also

:17:01. > :17:03.found inspiration from daily life. I often draw strength from meeting

:17:04. > :17:10.ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Volunteers, carers,

:17:11. > :17:18.community organisers and good neighbours. Unsung heroes who quiet

:17:19. > :17:22.dedication makes them special. She recalled this have been the year off

:17:23. > :17:26.her 90th birthday and paid tribute to the aspiring local charities she

:17:27. > :17:31.has been associated with. She also said much more could be achieved

:17:32. > :17:35.globally by acting with others. It is understandable that we sometimes

:17:36. > :17:42.think the world's problems are so big we can do little to help. Alone,

:17:43. > :17:49.we cannot end wars or wipe out injustice. But the cumulative impact

:17:50. > :17:54.of thousands of small acts of goodness can be bigger than we

:17:55. > :17:59.imagine. She said her own life are being guided by the inspiring

:18:00. > :18:04.message of Christianity. Christ's example helps me see the value of

:18:05. > :18:09.doing small things with great love. Whoever does them and whatever they

:18:10. > :18:13.themselves believe in. Why McRae was broadcast by a monarch who although

:18:14. > :18:19.usually indisposed this Christmas shows little sign of yielding to the

:18:20. > :18:23.passage of years. For the Queen this year there has been a 90th birthday

:18:24. > :18:27.and some lightning of her workload. There is no expectation whatsoever

:18:28. > :18:29.that she will step away from the core duties of the role as monarch

:18:30. > :18:48.and head of state. More than one hundred

:18:49. > :18:50.people have been rescued after being trapped in cable cars

:18:51. > :18:52.above Italy's ski slopes. One of the lifts

:18:53. > :19:01.failed in high winds. These skiers in Italy were saved and

:19:02. > :19:05.winched to safety. It happened in northern Italy at the Alpine resort.

:19:06. > :19:09.It was close to the Swiss border. It is one of your's highest ski resort

:19:10. > :19:17.and skiers were stuck at an altitude of over two and thousand metres. The

:19:18. > :19:22.fee heavy wind meant rescuers could not use helicopters to help those

:19:23. > :19:27.trapped. TRANSLATION: There was much wind. We

:19:28. > :19:31.stopped at the pillar and remained there for two hours and now there

:19:32. > :19:37.are the first rescue operations. Why McRae took over eight hours to bring

:19:38. > :19:40.down more than 130 stranded skiers. Fortunately, the weather was mild

:19:41. > :19:47.and not suffered from cold exposure. TRANSLATION: We have been unlucky,

:19:48. > :19:51.the gondola was heavy, but there were moments with gusts of 150

:19:52. > :19:58.kilometres per hour during which we were almost horizontal and it was a

:19:59. > :20:02.scary moment. The result set on social media that no one was in

:20:03. > :20:09.danger during the rescue. Those who are safely out were just pleased to

:20:10. > :20:12.be back before Christmas. One year since they arrived in the UK, the

:20:13. > :20:16.BBC has caught up with a Syrian families or one of the first to be

:20:17. > :20:19.brought up as part of the Government's resettlement programme.

:20:20. > :20:22.This family now living in the Midlands found it was a big change

:20:23. > :20:33.to adjust to. Tee-macro their children have visible scars from a

:20:34. > :20:42.suicide bomb. One year on and with a new addition to the family. They

:20:43. > :20:45.were some of the first Syrian refugees to come to the UK under a

:20:46. > :20:54.Government scheme. TRANSLATION: It is a big change for

:20:55. > :20:58.us. It made's forget our concerns, especially for the little girls.

:20:59. > :21:02.They are now much happier. The UK has been good for us and the only

:21:03. > :21:06.issue is the language, but we are trying to learn it. It is very

:21:07. > :21:09.different from our country. The family have spent the year settling

:21:10. > :21:17.into their new home in Coventry. TRANSLATION: The community is nice,

:21:18. > :21:21.the people are quite nice. We miss home. But what can we do? The

:21:22. > :21:28.children go to school and they are happy. We are happy. There were

:21:29. > :21:32.forced to leave Syria after a bomb exploded while they were out with

:21:33. > :21:36.others celebrating a Kurdish spring festival. Their nine-year-old

:21:37. > :21:40.daughter and their sexual daughter were seriously injured and taken to

:21:41. > :21:47.Iraq for urgent treatment before being brought to this country. The

:21:48. > :21:53.Government pledged to resettle an extra 20,000 refugees last year,

:21:54. > :22:00.more than 150 people are making this it then you home. The girls are now

:22:01. > :22:08.a school in the local area. It is fun. They treat us really well. The

:22:09. > :22:15.teachers are good. It is fun. Is the weather different? Yes, sometimes it

:22:16. > :22:20.rains. And it is cold. Both girls still need to undergo surgery, but

:22:21. > :22:21.for this family, their focus is on the new lives on what the future may

:22:22. > :22:34.bring. There island and 50,000 people here

:22:35. > :22:38.in the UK with dementia. That is likely to rise. There is no cure and

:22:39. > :22:40.a virtual allowed to compare the group of girls are collaborators

:22:41. > :22:41.Adela Busey is a bit reality experience to help those living with

:22:42. > :23:04.dementia. This year's theme comes with a

:23:05. > :23:11.virtual twist. This man is a former nurse who was dementia. This is his

:23:12. > :23:14.first time trying out a virtual reality headset as part of a trial

:23:15. > :23:29.that may revolutionise dementia care. Good fun. Here we have the

:23:30. > :23:36.underwater scene. As you can see, we have got the coral and the rocks and

:23:37. > :23:40.everything like that. Joe can virtually swim underwater with this

:23:41. > :23:45.device, visit a forest or even the beach. Along with other experiences

:23:46. > :23:58.that may be tricky otherwise. Isn't a gorgeous? -- isn't it gorgeous?

:23:59. > :24:05.The idea came from Alex Smail after he was inspired by his neighbours

:24:06. > :24:08.who are housebound. It created as for the elderly because I had

:24:09. > :24:13.neighbours who had not left their house for quite a long time. I

:24:14. > :24:16.thought wouldn't be great if we could give them an experience out of

:24:17. > :24:23.the house without having to leave it. Dementia affects 50 million

:24:24. > :24:27.people worldwide. 70% of those living in UK care homes are thought

:24:28. > :24:30.to have the condition. They kick-start a campaign has been

:24:31. > :24:34.launched in the hope of raising enough fronts to have the headset is

:24:35. > :24:39.widely available in care homes. These headsets are not a cure for

:24:40. > :24:41.dementia. What they do do is help to alleviate symptoms people can

:24:42. > :24:47.experience such as stress, depression and others. Users of the

:24:48. > :24:52.trial are medically assessed by their body movements. With this we
